Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

I am reading a lot about memory usage along with the 4 o/s update. Some are having more problems than others with the slowness, etc and some seem to feel it is connected with he memory usage. I am wondering if anyone has looked at the difference with he problem and memory between the 8gb,16gb and 32gb 3G iphones? I have a 16GB and it has many problems since the update but I don't find as much seemingly as others report. Wondering if it could be more 8gb models are having the memory problems? Curious.

16 GB for me, and I have to report, like you, some problems but not so heavy. All the problems are connected with memory usage, but keep in mind that is not the Flash size that matters, but RAM, and, as far as I know, all the 3G have the same amount of RAM (128 Mb).

Glad you brought that out on the memory. I had not thought of that and should have. So again we are back to having some ideas but no solutions. Frankly unless Apple steps up with a fix I don't see any of us happy. We got spoiled with a great devise and now want our happiness back. Just can't figure out how to get there? I was a loyal BB user for years and loved it until I got used to the touch screen and apps of the Iphone. Now it seems hard to go back to being with out it but I may have to as I need a reliable phone. Hoping for a miracle!

I am suspecting anytime from now till the 12th for the 4.2 to be distributed via iTunes. Till then we can only hope that it fixes these problems. I will definitely post back with the results which I am sure many will do to.

I have a bad feeling 4.2 is not going to make any difference.

I have the same fear, but I can tell just after I've tried, I hope they've seen this thread.

Today, I was speaking to a Mercedes specialist in telephones and in-car electronics for Mercedes vehicles. What he told me has me wondering if the problems with IOS4 go a lot deeper than the problems we have with the iPhone 3G....

What he told me was that the iPhone 3G and 3GS worked fine with the full range of Mercedes in-car systems. However, as soon as the iPhone4 came out they found loads and loads of problems with the software which would prevent the phone from functioning properly (you'd receive a call but could not answer it on hands-free; if you were able to answer it, the signal would cut for no apparent reason; you could not view the address book on the console or use it; nor could you use the text system via the console - all problems which the 3G and 3GS had NOT had). He told me that Mercedes themselves had to add a 'fix' to get the iPhone 4 to work at all and there continue to be loads of their customers who now have a very unreliable phone in their cars.

He strongly advised that if I wanted a reliable in-car system for my Mercedes that I stick with the 3G or 3GS as, in his view, there were some far-reaching problems with the software on the iPhone4.

After hearing that, I'm inclined to agree with cliff, that the problems may run deep enough that they will not be fixed by 4.2.

This is very interesting. So the problem is that iOS4 has a structural problem somewhere, so it's not our phone which is "old", it's the OS that's "young"!

    Let's wait and see.

I think about being involved in beta testing where I hear the phrase "is this a bug or a new feature". With our phones it's both!

Interestingly there was an article posted recently on Lifehacker about Google-ifying your iPhone which generated some pretty interesting comments.
