Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

Phew, now that throws a complete spanner in the works. Performance degradation on i3G
when running iOS4 is well documented and has been acknowledged by Apple. I don't think there's any dispute about that. The issue is whether or not anything can be done to improve performance until a formal fix is provided, or an effective third party solution. The extent of this thread alone is testament to the fact that there is a serious issue.

I suppose it's possible that perhaps the last-batch 3G models were modified and you and your friend have one of those. I'd love to know more if you can spare the time to flesh out the details about your 3G working faster under iOS4 than under iOS3.

Of the three phones in question two are 8 gig and the other is a 16 gig. All were purchased through Fido (a cell phone service provider). Two were purchased in Oakville and one in Scarborough, both of which are suburbs of Toronto. Each had the iOS upgraded through iTunes independently of each other in the last two months. I don't have any bench mark tests to show the phone is as good as or better than it was when running OS 3.X. No one has experienced any degradation, phone issues or anything of the sort. And none of the phones in question had been hacked. We all simply went on iTunes and followed the prompts. Pure dumb luck? I've no idea but happy to say my phone works well.

one of the oddities of this issue, all along, has been that only some seem to be affected - different expectation might be part of it, different use-patterns, too, perhaps, but the cause hasn't been securely identified yet - very odd ! Apple had a team on it, 'wonder what they found ... and whether iOS4.1 was an interim fix & iOS4.2 will put the matter to rest, or ... ?

The phones were purchased at different times. One phone is nearly three years old and the other two are approaching two years.

Kitchen and Christopher, I hadn't appreciated that some 3Gs were unaffected or that others improved after upgrading. Thanks for that.

As I said before, performance on mine is now much improved, in fact I would say it's very good, but I'd like eventually to dispense with the need to manually close all Safari pages, which seems to be the only way of preserving it's performance at the moment.

Introducing a "Close All Pages" function might be a good idea so that they could be closed with a shake or a single tap.

    Not me! LOL

I went off to find the reactions of those who have tried it before I considered taking the plunge. And I found this which didn't sound very encouraging

then again, they might - unless we put a sticker on it to say it's been upgraded to iOS4 - wonder if Apple have some available (the sort of thing Intel & MS used to have put as a warning on Windows desktops & laptops) ...

This is the equivalent of saying you are getting screwed by GM every time they release new model cars that have features you didn't get with yours when you bought it. You bought what you bought. Anything else is gravy.

Before IOS 4 I had a phone which worked fine. I never asked for nor particularly wanted the extra features of IOS4.

I upgraded to IOS4 because it appeared to be nothing more than the usual "update" which occurs all the time with software. And my phone stopped being able to do what it used to do.

and one of the things my phone used to do was have the feature "Find My Phone" so the idea of losing that feature is not an attractive one.

I am in the same position as someone who takes their car into the garage working and is handed ti back crippled because they filled a petrol engine with diesel!!

I strongly disagree with what you have said - I am not complaining about not having extra and new features. I am complaining at LOSING functions I had when I bought the phone or before IOS4 came out!!

What if you're told that there is a tune-up available from GM and that it works for your car but when you get it it makes your car run worse?

This has nothing to do with expectations of the original purchase. In fact as many have said if there were an official way to go back to what was on the original phone as an OS, they would.

OK !!! Just updated to 4.2 (actually 4.2.1) ......first impression : seems faster , a lot faster..... Camera almost instantly initiated, my photo library is now all visible (had some pics completely black ) , ipod started faster, calculator too and weather app as well. Spotlight took no more than 2 seconds to present the keyboard to be able to write my query. All my apps seems to work faster now ! Safari is almost the same , but keyboard is much more responsive to my fingers now.....seems that the lag is gone !!
In general : cannot really compare to 3.1.3 because I've been in iOS 4 darkness for toooooo long and cant remember what is was like before BUT it does seems a lot better now......
Hope it stays that way !
give it a try , you've nothing to loose anyway !!
