Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

IPHONE means it's a phone and should be able to find a contact and dial them! if I wanted an MP3 player then I would have purchased an IPOD TOUCH

    *Initial Impressions:*

Can't say it is much faster then 4.1 and I totally forgot how 3.1.3 was. But It has fixed my WiFi issues, I can use WiFi now when previously it would either be slow or not available.

You can enable Find My iPhone on 3G(s) - just setup it up on a 2010 iOS device and then use the same credentials on your pre-2010 device.

Has anyone encountered any problems with the iPod skipping the first track on all playlists?

I have had that problem ever since upgrading to 4.0, it didn't do it before. It also jumps to the end of almost every podcast when I open one to listen. Since installing 4.2.1 I have not had a chance to try it out to see if it is fixed.

I have followed all the fixes, workarounds, etc and even paid the Genius Bar 2 visits. One thing that I was told in the store was that if I had performed a "restore" then I may have restored any O/S problems from my backup to the phone. It is the only time I have ever become less than friendly in an Apple store since I had not upgraded my phone that way on its current build as I formatted and started with an out of the box 3.1.3 load with no personal data or apps and then added items back manually.

As soon as I revealed that I had a 3G phone in the Apple store the gentleman that was helping me looked a little offended that I had even walked in with it. After listening to the canned spiel I revealed that I had actually consulted for his store on the business side and trained several of the "geniuses" there over the last 4 years. I'm an independent technology consultant and that store is a source for a lot of Apple consulting for small and large businesses. After that I was pretty much brushed off.

Apple is going to learn a hard lesson from this one. Elitist driven forced obsolescence is not a good idea when you pull it on your customers. It's even worse when you pull it on someone who brings revenue to one of your stores.

I downloaded two apps, iStat which shows the stats on the phone and Free Memory which actually does free some memory. When I used them together I have seen improvements from the around 1 or 2 MB to 10 to 15 MB being free. The problem is then I watch as it drops back down to around 5 MB. I now have 4.2.1 and all extras turned off on the phone.

Sorry to hear your experience, I do believe certain Genius crews can be a pain on the neck.

I resynced my media and now things seem fine at least for now, who knows what other quirks I might discover later.

    Will keep you guys posted

OK, while we had dinner, we upgraded my '3G from 4.1 to to 4.2.1 - and it seems quite a bit better - smoother as well as quicker - opening apps (one's we've tried, anyway), doing messages, browsing, 'mail. etc - it's early days, of course !

Had performance issues with my Iphone 3G after upgrading to OS4. Finally couldn't take it anymore and upgraded to Iphone 4. Really mad at Apple..
Normally, even trivial things about Apple are reported in media, but I'm mad that this issue had no coverage at all..

I was one of the lucky ones that stayed with 3.1.3. Would you recommend upgrading to 4.2, or should I just leave well enough alone?

Don't touch your phone or you'll be in a misserable state and you'll want to break your phone everytime you try to use it!
