Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

In some surreal parallel universe, if people were iPhones, we are currently witnessing the mass euthanasia of all those of us over 40 regardless of physical or mental condition. iOS4 might have well been a virus for what it has done to us - overnight we have become sick, slow, forgetful, slurred, crippled and ready for the ground to open up for us. Landfill. Carbon footprint.

Make way for the next generation.

The best post I've read in weeks on this depressing, distressing, debilitating topic.
    Thanks for making my day.

Had the same problem, fixed it like this.

    1. Turn off push
    2. Close down Safari after using it (have to do it manually btw)
    3. Disabled spotlight
    4. Disabled Multi Media Messaging.

This guy has the steps -

    http://www.andrewstechnology.co.uk/reference/tips/38-iphone-3g-lag-fix.html

The old 3G probably just can't hack OS4 and lags and crashes if you try to use it however having done the above mine works without lag and doesn't get hot which it was doing.

Being a computer technician, I was adamant that I would not be upgrading to IOS4 given the amount of serious issues most people seem to have encountered.

However, my natural technical curiosity got the better of me and I decided to give it a shot (with the downgrade hack instructions close at hand).

Although it will likely be of no comfort to those experiencing serious issues, for the record, I can say that my upgrade was incredibly smooth and painless.

In addition, after a lot of testing, I can say that the phone feels no slower to respond. If anything, it appears to be faster. The battery is not draining and everything works as intended.

Go figure. Anyway, I thought I'd put it out there just in case anyone wanted to get into the nitty gritty of comparing iPhone models, upgrade processes, environments etc. in the hope of finding out why some worked, but most didn't.

    Best of luck ... !

If so, I wish he would inform my service provider, to whom I am contractually obligated to make monthly payments on my 3G for another 14 months.

Apple, I am having the same issues as thousands of other people. It is a horrible update... if you can even call it that.

I was having the same issues as everyone else here. I was ready to can my phone and go with another phone/company because every email wasn't being addressed and I kept getting the run around from support staff when I called. I have to say though, it appears to be fixed with the most recent update. Thanks Apple for listening to your customers.

Count me as one more taking it in the rear from Apple. I "upgraded" my 3G last week and it is almost a brick. Everything hangs for minutes before opeing or just crashing. I can't play any of my many many games, can't check email or use the alarm clock, I've even missed calls waiting for the **** thing to answer them. This is completely unacceptable Apple fix it now, don't you have enough publicity problems with Antenagate already.

I'm just the latest naive consumer that got done in by the iOS 4. And what really ***** for me is - Apple wont even let me vent my frustrations on this forum. If only apple support were as efficient as the forum mods.

I am having the same problems. Unfornately you cant go back to the 3.1.3. I tried and had no luck. I called AT&T and they couldnt help either. They said once you go to the OS 4 you cant go back. I wish I could too cause I hate the new IOS 4. It *****. My phone is not as smooth as it was and there is nothing different that is so spectacular about the ios4.

Obviously no one from Aplle is either reading these posts or reading but not responding. The frustration with the slow performance after downloading the IOS4.0 is massive (look at the number of posts), however still no action taken nor advice given by Apple.

Yes we all understand that Apple is running a business here, however increasing the number of frustrated customers will not help and will not switch all those 3G users to 4G !!

I put in a request for support through my Applecare plan. I am expecting a call (LANline) Thursday Morning. I am not happy with the performance and want to roll the OS back.
