Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

You're just guessing that the problem is the amount of RAM on the 3G, but this is incorrect. I have several friends with the 3GS that have the same problem. Since it has twice the RAM, the problem is likely something else.

My iPhone 3G has been slower the past ~3 months or so, but with the OS4 upgrade it is unacceptably slow. Specifically, it is excessively returning to the home screen; loading webpages in Safari; opening and modifying the settings; and, most irritating, it freezes when I get text messages if I'm running a 3rd party app (like Pandora, and others).

My AT&T contract is up at the end of the year, and I think I'm ready to return to Verizon (better coverage in rural Nevada, and their 3G network is much, much better in San Francisco) and switch to an Android. I'm not the only one Apple, so please fix this!

I have 2x 3G 8GB and an iPhone 4. And when it was running at IOS4 it was dog slow. I can help most of you by telling you to go in to your Settings -> Spotlight Search, and unchecking ALL the items listed.

Just like on Snow Leopard and Windows Vista. While it's a nice feature to be able to find something "really" fast. This just eats up a lot of resources on your 3G and below phones. Anyone here with a Mac will know what Spotlight Search is. For you Windows folks, it's basically turning off Indexing on Vista.

Hope this help some of you pooooor folks

I have now had 4.0.1 for almost two weeks, and I still consider my phone usable. Mostly. This is my tale, in case it helps anyhow.

When I got my phone 18 months ago it worked fine.

A few months ago, with iOS 3, I noticed degraded battery life. I had a local repair shop change the battery without much improvement.

With 4.0.0 my phone became unusable. Slow and still bad battery life like for so many other people.

I restored the phone to factory settings and set up as a New phone. Added a limited number of applications. Still slow. Unknown battery life, as I hardly could use the phone.

With 4.0.1, it was like a cork released from a Champagne bottle, and the speed improved dramatically. The battery life seems slightly improved, but I could not swear on it.

The speed is still, two weeks later, very acceptable. The battery life is almost acceptable.

Spotlight is on. Folders are on. 3G is on. Push notifications are off.

What I stopped doing, due to the limited battery life, is to watch movies and use the New York Times application. I read less on the Kindle App and Stanza than I did before. I have not even bothered trying to install Bento.

Mail, Safari, a couple of frequently used dictionaries, work fine. Japanese keyboard input is slower than before, but it is usable.

Your phones are probably different from mine, but hopefully some of the information above can be of some help.

disable all Spotlight search options ...

'not sure I understand - clearly doing this might help, at least a little, but in iOS3.1.3 we had nine Spotlight options ticked, and now with iOS4.0.1 we have ten, just one more ... and, if iOS3 could cope, why not iOS4 ??

Here's something to fan the flames a little more….

I was on the line to the O2 Business customer care about my tariff. At the end of this unrelated conversation, the lady asked in her lovely Leeds tones - "Is there anything else I can help you with?"

I saw an opportunity to ask if she new anything about the iOS4/3G incompatibility. She put me through to technical. He started with the usual jumping through hoops routine and I politely stopped him in his tracks. "I've done all that, been on the message boards, etc, etc"

He asked me to hold the line while he spoke to Apple support. After 5 minutes on hold listening to Soft Indie Anthems III, O2 Technical man came back on the line with this:

"I've spoken to Apple and they have said that iOS4 doesn't work with the iPhone 3G (note: 'doesn't work', not 'doesn't work +that well+' or 'doesn't work +so good+'). They have a team working on solving the problem but cannot give any timescale as to when this will be done."

I may be paraphrasing to a slight degree - there may be some slight inaccuracies in my recollection- but that was pretty much the gist of it.

    Discuss.

My guess is that Spotlight can work fine in iOS4, but deactivating it may free some corrupted cache. It is possible that activating it again will keep the speed improvement for some users, if the cache is rebuilt. Spotlight is on with my phone, and I consider the speed acceptable.

It is also possible that the OS itself takes more memory in iOS4. There was enough RAM to handle Spotlight in iOS3, but with iOS4 there is no room for that same action. Deactivating some other memory consuming function, like international keyboards, could achieve a similar result.

Just got off phone with apple. Only recommendation is to update to 4.0.1 as the representative stated that she had customers state it had "helped a little"

Well, technically, it might can... BUT...the fundamental problem with iOS4 and iPhone 3G is the lack of RAM. The OS plus video demands use enough that larger apps already cannot even launch. Add to the load a background image and you have used even more of the lacking RAM. Trust me, you DON'T want to push the phone like that...
