Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

Iphone 3G, iOS 4

Did you hard reset after the disabling the spotlight search? That part is key to getting it work. I have 20 iphones under my care and it has worked every time for my users. 9 of them are 3G. The rest are a mixture of 3GS' and 4's.

I downgraded following the instructions on the lifehacker website. Worked great. I am very satisfied that I went back to 3.1.3.

OS4.01 was a joke - now my phone switches on and off as it pleases and lost all calender and contact info.

I agree I have been a loyal Apple supporter since I got my Iphone nearly 3 years ago and this is not funny no more.

    Please Apple do something

Did you try the fix I posted earlier? Like I said I had considerable performance issues with multiple phones. I applied the changes and performed a reset afterwards. No real issues . I asked users to post success / failure rates but I've only seen on so far.

After the iOS4 update all of your Spotlight Search options may have been selected.

On the 3G iPhone Go to SETTINGS> GENERAL> HOME BUTTON> SPOTLIGHT SEARCH

On the 3GS Go to SETTINGS> GENERAL> SPOTLIGHT SEARCH

De-select the search options you don't want (I just use messages notes). The more options selected the more processing / memory is used by your phone.

    Reset Phone -

    It works..

    Hey Jobs,
Thanks for releasing a sub-par OS4 for the iPhone 3G. I am re-booting my phone once again to make a phone call. SCREW YOU!!!!

My 3G is a brick. There is no way I'd buy another iPhone again after having a 3G that I really enjoyed using essentially stolen from me by the company who made it. iOS 4.0.1 hardly improved my phone. Hard Reboots are not a solution they are what perpetuate mediocrity. Further, the fact that the iPhone 4 has design flaws according to NYT certainly has me looking at android phones: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/13/technology/13apple.html

Why should I trust Apple? Why should you?

ABSOLUTE GARBAGE!!!!!!!! This entire IOS4 update issue is ridiculous. This is coming from a company that touts quality and perfection. My phone is USELESS! I will never trust an Apple update again.

Did you try the spotlight search fix? If not you should give it a try. Like I have said in previous posts, I've done it on over 20 phones and it has worked.

Lot of angry posts her but I don't see anyone verifying or debunking fixes posted. I just see complaints. If the fix below does not resolve performance issues, please let the forum know. Like I said, I have used it on over 20 devices and each of my users state their performance issues have been resolved. If this is a forum for troubleshooting the troubleshoot. If this is a forum for 3itching, then have at it. To all the real techies, please let us know it the following works::::

    HERE WE EFFING GO AGAIN!

I had considerable performance issues with multiple phones. I applied the changes and performed a reset afterwards. No real issues . I asked users to post success / failure rates but I've only seen on so far.

    @ Kasaar
For me, deselecting non-essential options in Spotlight Search did help, but it did not entirely resolve speed issues and app crashes.
Downgrading my 3G from iOS 4.0.1 back to 3.1.3 fixed everything (obviously).
Personally, I'm finished trying to force this 4.x "square peg" into my "round hole" 3G. I'll stay on the old OS, and retain my sanity.

Just noticed another compounding issue with the iOS4 with 3G slowdown...

I just did the 4.0.1 update. After the reboot, I immediately went to to Free Memory and noticed that "MoibleMusicPlaye - other name "iPod" is active... why? I am not using the iPod function, nor have I since the reboot.

Oh - had 8.3MB available. After launching Free Memory 2.0, it inched up to 40.79 as of typing this...

    Ugh...

My 3G is SLOW SLOW SLOW with iOS 4 as well, i find this sort of lack of communication from apple to its loyal customers dishearting. I would have hoped after seeing that OS4 is not working well for 3G, at least some sort of arrangement would be made to allow a downgrade to OS 3. But now I see this as a greater push from apple for users to purchase iphone 4 even though the majority already would have!!

No. This hasn't helped me. My phone showed no improvement after your suggestion.

    @ Kasaar

Spotlight switched entirely off - no visible improvement. 4.0.1 installed - minor improvement for a day or two. After that - absolute brick.

I downgraded to 3.1.3 and it's all perfect again.

This is the only "fix" I see.

thanks .... should have also said we did try un-checking some & all of the Spoltight items and it did make it more responsive, and presumably with 3.1.3 it would have, too - not saying it restored it to normal responsiveness, but switching-off functionality we've come to find useful even before the updates is not really a solution !
