Did you try the spotlight search fix? If not you should give it a try. Like I have said in previous posts, I've done it on over 20 phones and it has worked.
@kasaar
Stop calling it a fix, Its not a fix if it doesn't solve the problem.
I've tried this, I've tried double-reboots. Nothing works.
I called Apple and they instructed that they were releasing a new update to speed up iOS4 on the 3G which came out as 4.0.1 which did NOTHING to speed up my 3G.
Absolutely shocking, poor effort. -
Jul 28, 2010 5:32 AM in response to Xplorer77by MacPacho,I am experiencing the very same issues, the touch screen does not work effectively now and the whole experience has been slowed down, sometimes resulting in the phone blacking out and then going back to the home screen. I can't believe they would of releases an update that would cause so many problems..get you act together and please fix this..
The text messaging is impossible now and takes ages for it to show and send and the new inbox for e-mails is over the top.
I am never one to complain, in fact this is the first time I have ever created an account and complained, but I am really annoyed at the stupid update, I was always under the impression updates were improvements not the opposite...
Let's hope they get an new update out soon.....
Sort it out....

Jul 28, 2010 5:48 AM in response to jimmaaaby Christopher John Hunter, rather mysteriously, our 3G running 4.0.1 is quite snappy today, relatively speaking - 'not aware of having done anything to cause this change - and all ten Spotlight items are checked (*) - it can't last !
the snappiness doesn't extend to incoming calls, though - still fail to answer many even most of them before voice-mail cuts-in or people give-up !
(*) - we did uncheck some & then all, to try the "fix", but then reinstated them all - hmm, 'wonder if that was what did it ??

Jul 28, 2010 7:58 AM in response to jimmaaaby _Shorty-CM,@jimmaaa I think you're confusing 4.0.1, which is already out and only changed the signal strength display, and 4.1 which is not out and hopefully fixes this problem. -
Jul 28, 2010 8:00 AM in response to pedrocmby UltimateFrisbeeRules,THANKS! Good thinking. At least so far, this worked at least to a noticeable extent for me and my 3G phone had become pretty slow upon recent update... but maybe the timing of that coincided with a Facebook App update that is the source of much or all of the problem. Causation vs. Correlation...always requires good scientific method to figure it out!
Still have some unexplainable slowness waiting to "Slide to Unlock" sometimes, which is quite annoying and quite unlikely to trace back to Facebook App. So probably there are multiple variables at play here. -

hmm, not only 'phone functions, the Camera is also almost unusable ... still, 'tis odd how it varies ... -
Jul 28, 2010 8:53 AM in response to _Shorty-CMby Christopher John Hunter, maybe it's a placebo effect, but we felt 4.0.1 did improve more than just the bars ... without going so far as fixing the problem !

Jul 28, 2010 9:38 AM in response to Christopher John Hunterby DennisMichael,I have noticed that since I have put the 4.01 update in my iPhone my battery life has gotten worse. Now most might think it might be due to the phone being old or me not charging it properly. That is not the case. I recharge it well above 30% life and I do a full charge once every 1.5-2 months when the battery is at 20%. I have owned this phone since February, bought it brand new.
This is messed. -
Jul 28, 2010 9:49 AM in response to DennisMichaelby Christopher John Hunter, yep, we've found battery life to be down a lot, too - eg: was half-full when we went out this afternoon, and I used it to make a couple of 'calls, check e-mails a couple of times, and take 30 or so snaps using Camera - had to stop 'cos was in the red ! -

a few days ago I sent a short & polite note to Apple, and they came back asking if they could 'call me to discuss - so I've been trying to make a succinct list :
+ we were early-adopters of iPhone 3G, and when our contract came-up for renewal, we put both our 'phones onto a regular monthly holding contract, while we waited for iPhone4 to be announced & released in the UK ...
+ when update to iOS4 was offered for 3G, we said yes & and the update went smoothly, as usual, but the result was a horribly inhibited 'phone (se we left the second one on 3.1.3) - by inhibited, we mean :
+ hesitant & slow, often very slow, with apps taking time to open & sometimes not opening at all, and some often being hardly usable at all - eg: Phone & Camera ...
+ very variable, though - snappier sometimes than others ...
+ double hard reboot (holding down power & home buttons until Apple logo, then doing it again immediately, without doing anything in-between) can help, for a while ...
+ running Memory Sweep (an app) shows Free Memory varies, second to second, but also time to time - often under 2MB, sometimes around 10MB, occasionally up around 20MB - always better after reboot, but declines with use & time ...
+ battery life worse - have to charge much more often, especially when using some apps - eg: Camera ...
+ have updated to 4.0.1 - seems a bit better, but still very far from OK ...
+ have tried unchecking Spotlight options, some & all - can help, but gives lost functionality !
+ ... any more ??

Jul 28, 2010 11:18 AM in response to Xplorer77by Xspringe,How on earth did this update pass quality control? Constant crashes, slowdowns, weak battery life, dropped calls the list goes on and on. This is the most frustrating phone experience I have ever had. I just had Maps crash (literally) 20 times before I was able to input directions properly! Even music playback stutters and crashes while browsing music.
I was planning to upgrade to the iPhone 4 but if this is what we can expect after owning an iPhone for 1-2 years there's no way I'll be getting that phone. -
Jul 28, 2010 11:27 AM in response to Xspringeby DennisMichael,Exactly my point. And what surprises me is that they still haven't fixed the issues. They are usually never this slow to fix problems with their software. Do I dare say they are becoming like Microsoft? LOL Did Bill Gates creep into Apple somehow? -

third items revised to pick-up on stuttering & crashes :
+ hesitant & slow, often stutters, often very slow, with apps genrally taking time to open & sometimes not opening at all, some are often hardly usable at all - eg: Phone & Camera - and some crash-out, sometimes ... -
Jul 28, 2010 11:56 AM in response to Christopher John Hunterby andrevalente,Hi guys,
Just to add another complaining user to the lot! This update is not "appleish".
Please fix the main version of iOS4 or release a stripped down version of iOS4 just for the 3G!
thanks,
