Jul 29, 2010 12:55 AM in response to euromarketerby Skiver,Just adding myself to the list of extremely disgruntled 3G owners. Just how much testing was actually done before releasing iOS4? -
Jul 29, 2010 1:00 AM in response to Xplorer77by dwp118,I'm looking for a way to downgrade back to 3.1.3 for my iPhone 3G. I unfortunately upgraded my 3G phone, which worked just fine, to iOS 4 and it has totally rendered my phone useless. The touchscreen barely works now. When a call comes in, I am unable to slide the unlock button to answer until 3-4 rings go by. Battery performance is gone, with a high performing day getting me 5 hours of usage. I have to have it plugged in constantly to get through a day. And processing times for any application have ground to a halt. Games are constantly crashing that worked fine before. I've even had Safari crash on loading. Don't bother with maps, it takes forever!!
Apple needs to realize this is a major problem. My 3G iPhone worked fine, but Apple has succeeded in ruining my experience, in the hopes that I will upgrade to the new hardware. A poor business model for keeping customers. -
Jul 29, 2010 1:16 AM in response to MacOpHby MacOpH,I'm a ghost!
Just like Bruce Willis in The 6th Sense…. I can't interact with anything around me….all this time…..I didn't realise...
I am for all the world running my fingers around my 3G touchscreen and it is responding like we are in two different worlds. It's like I have become an echo, an imprint of my former self….

Jul 29, 2010 2:01 AM in response to Xplorer77by Michael J.P.,Just wanted to say "me, too". My iPhone's performance was really much better before. I tried the hint to hard-reset the phone to make it really boot afresh (instead of just loading the saved memory image), but that did not really help much.
At least I'm happy that I am not the only one.
I had thought about getting a new iPhone 4 for myself, and giving the 3G to my daughter, but how can I give a broken phone to here? Please Apple, give me back 3.1.x with security updates. -
Jul 29, 2010 2:46 AM in response to Michael J.P.by AKRBTN,Over on TUAW a discussion on poor ios4 performance has come up with the suggestion of turning off spotlight search - and guess what - it works!
You cannot actually turn it off but you can disable all the search features. Settings-General-Home Button-Spotlight Search, and untick all the options. There is a clear improvement in my 3G performance now that I have done this.
Of course this means living without that feature - personally I never use it - but if you rely on it heavily you may not like it. Just a suggestion.... -
Jul 29, 2010 3:03 AM in response to Xplorer77by Bugfixer,Add me to the list of those with the 3G and battery/performance problems. In the first few days the problems did not arise, in the following the battery slowly started to go from a couple of days to one.
The reactivity of the phone decreased with time. It's really annoying to type on a symbol on the keyboard and wait 1/2 seconds to see the results...
Today I read that Apple is aware about the problem and that they will investigate and fix. I really hope so. -
Jul 29, 2010 3:15 AM in response to AKRBTNby Christopher John Hunter, well, have just tried it again - unchecking all the criteria & doing reboot (Home & Power buttons ... ) ... wake-up with Home button & slider still real slow, Messages & Settings still real slow, 'though maybe a little quicker, Contacts & Safari seem better, various apps seem better, too .. not a fix, perhaps some alleviation, and we much prefer to have the Spotlight functionality - and all the rest - as we did with 3.1.3 ...
we've found the problem really quite erratic - when I tried to show my wife the problem earlier today, it wasn't nearly as bad as it could be ...

Jul 29, 2010 3:40 AM in response to Xplorer77by Morphilus,Adding another one to the list of very disappointed customers that foolishly allowed iTunes to 'update' (aka render next to useless) their trusty iPhone 3G. Have the same issues (ridiculously slow, reduced battery life, apps crashing now etc) as others have already mentioned.
I gave the phone (had since release day) to my 10yr old daughter in the end as she used to love my iPhone. Now she is actually contemplating, going back to her cheap and cheerful nokia instead!
I do hope that this is not an effort to con people into buying new hardware, that would be shameful. -
Jul 29, 2010 3:41 AM in response to Morphilusby Josh Ryan,Just want to add another me too. I loved my iPhone up until the iOS4 update, now I think twice about using certain features because I know I'll be sitting around waiting for it to load and then once it loads it will be so laggy that I can hardly use it. -
Jul 29, 2010 3:58 AM in response to Josh Ryanby StrikeApple,Imagine taking your two-year-old car into the shop for an engine tune-up.
Then imagine getting the car back and finding that it now won't go faster than 10 MPH.
That's what iOS 4 has done to my phone.
Sluggish doesn't even begin to describe it. Example: time from entering the maps app to when it actually starts responding to text input: 49 seconds. I just timed it. Used to be a couple of seconds at most.
Thanks, Apple. -
Jul 29, 2010 4:06 AM in response to Xplorer77by Paul Slovin1,ME TOO....My 1 year old 16gb is sooooo unbearably slow after the iOS4 update! Makes me hate the phone I used to love. It takes minutes for programs to open, every screen lags..... -
Jul 29, 2010 4:18 AM in response to Xplorer77by Stildawg,My phone is completely worthless after IOS4. If they don't fix it soon I will have to get a new phone, and it won't be the iPhone 4. -
Jul 29, 2010 5:08 AM in response to Xplorer77by Mike Maloy,I have also most of the same issues...and some more! Before updating to iOS4.0.1 my iPhone 3G run fast without any problems opening apps and using them. Everything worked great and smoothly.
Now with iOS4.0.1 safari quits by itself, links inside safari couldn't be sent by mail and it needs longer to open apps. Sometimes the preferences starts opening but after a black screen it returns to the home apps screen. My wireless connection is now very bad! At places where I had full wireless reception, now I have 1 or max. 2 reception units.
I also tryed it with downgrading, but that wasn't really a success because, some very useful and important Apps also were updated to iOS4.
Till iOS4.0.1 I was all around satisfied and loved my iPhone! Now it is a very big disaster and starts keep me wondering what is it all about? Didn't Apple test this update on the 3G? What's the reason for this?
On Apple's last press conference about the antenna problems with iPhone 4, Mr. Jobs said something, I want to believe in: ".... we love to make our users happy..."
SO PLS MAKE ALL OF US 3G USERS HAPPY AGAIN.
Greetings

Jul 29, 2010 5:33 AM in response to Mike Maloyby Greg@VITO,I have monitored the number of Page-Ins and the situation with memory on my iPhone 3G with iOS 4.0 (and now 4.0.1) installed. It seems iPhone 3G has too little RAM for this OS version.
Apple, please optimize things. For example, why do I have accessory daemon, bluetooth daemon in memory if I never use accessories or bluetooth? Could you launch them on demand?
Just spend some time on memory optimization already!
I had to turn off my exchange sync, the situation has improved a bit. If I turn off my mobile.me sync, the situation improves further, but I cannot - I use it for my personal contacts, mail and calendar. -
Jul 29, 2010 6:29 AM in response to Xplorer77by SuzanneN,Yes, I have an iPhone 3G. Yes, I upgraded to iOS 4. YES, my phone now drains the battery daily (even though I hardly use it--I used to charge it weekly), gets hot after a 15 minute phone conversation, and MOST annoying--is slow or unresponsive when I use the touch screen. I hate having to retouch, reswipe multiple times, and finally just give up and angrily put the phone away. I viewed a video called a "Parody" of the iPhone 3G with iOS 4, but it was no parody for me--it was like my real-life experience. I am not pleased. I feel like Apple misled us, so that we would upgrade to the iPhone 4 when our 3G performance degraded. However, given the problems people have been having with the iPhone 4, I am not ready to fork over my money for that.
