Aug 29, 2010 7:45 AM in response to Xplorer77by Lagwagon1,I had a dream I smashed my iPhone 3G with a hammer and threw it out the window. When I woke up, I felt relieved that this burden was off my hands until my iPhone "clock" alarm chimed at 7:30am. I then realized it was a dream and had to bare with this piece of junk for another day.
Since iOS 4, my phone has not worked correctly at all. I have missed highway exits, been told I was in Paris while I was actually in Ottawa, Canada. My contacts list takes so long to load, I could have walked over to their house by that time and my wifi does not work, forcing me to have ever growing phone bills as I can no longer use the services and apps I have paid for which require a fully functioning iPhone. End users can not fix these problems and should not resort to scotch taping SIM cards, restarting and reformatting routers or using paper maps to figure out what your iPhone is doing. iOS 4 is the new Windows Vista.
Apple, are you listening to us?

Jul 29, 2010 6:54 AM in response to Xplorer77by abbybrewster,My iphone 3G has also been slow after update to iOS 4. Internet connection has always been a little slow, but the software update now affected how quickly I can run my apps, switch screens, type SMS and emails, create new events in my calendar…everything! It is beyond frustrating. -
Jul 29, 2010 6:59 AM in response to Xplorer77by gtrmanla,my two cents..... same problem, extremely slow and sometimes it will lock up when I try to open up Settings. -
Jul 29, 2010 7:27 AM in response to Xplorer77by bergamot64,Apple, PLEASE fix this. I loved my iPhone 3G. I now hate my iPhone 3G. I have no immediate plans to buy a new iPhone 4, and if this was some insidious plan to put older phone owners on the upgrade track, you have made a grave mistake in your calculations about customer loyalty. The iOS 4 on the 3G is sluggish, unresponsive, apps (Maps, email, settings, etc., etc.) hang for many seconds before they start responding, and the Bluetooth connection which used to work flawlessly in my car now only establishes a connection 50% of the time. No new apps on the phone - this is all 100% attributable to the new OS. You need to either provide your 3G phone owners with a downgrade path back to OS 3.x or release a patch to 4.0 that "fixes" the performance issues for 3G phones. I find it almost impossible to believe that no one in your QA group raised this as a serious issue prior to releasing the new OS... -
Jul 29, 2010 7:46 AM in response to bergamot64by dermoreilly,Same issues here with my 3G. Its responding so slow that it feels like the front button is malfunctioning. Have removed all non essential apps and results in only a marginal improvement in overall performance. -
Jul 29, 2010 8:04 AM in response to SuzanneNby britt2189,Just wanted to add another to the list. I'm having the same issues: sluggish SMS, the apps are super slow, and answering calls is a nightmare. I'm holding out for a white iphone 4, but now there is appearing to be problems with that as well. Its difficult to be patient and wait for the white iphone 4 to come out when Apple has now made living with my 'previously perfectly fine' iphone 3G extremely difficult.
I've thought of downgrading, but then I read that if you don't have a backup saved from before it was upgraded, EVERYTHING (including contacts) get deleted from the iphone.
Apple just needs to re-release the old version, instead of giving us 4.1. Next will probably be 4.2, 4.3....and the problem will never get solved. -

Jul 29, 2010 8:10 AM in response to dermoreillyby gade202,I'll join the list as I've been suffering for over a month now as well. My purchase of an iPhone 4 relies on this being resolved as I was going to give this 3G phone to my wife but that's not going to happen in it's current state.
I'd also like to think that Apple would correct the issue somehow as my 3G is less than 2 years old. That's an unacceptable "oh well, time to upgrade" age for a cell phone that worked just fine otherwise. -
Jul 29, 2010 8:11 AM in response to Xplorer77by rswift,Features are great, performance is truly awful... surely things should get better with age not worse?! Come on Apple this is pretty poor form. -
Jul 29, 2010 8:12 AM in response to britt2189by tr0z,I adore my iPhone 3G. I have owned a few smart phones and this one is incredible. I love checking email, apps, and texting. After the iOS4 update I can't even text .The phone skips to the home screen, the home button is unresponsive, and I can't text. I've invested about $80.00 in apps and since the update I've experienced slow downs that range from minor inconvenience to extreme. The phone crashes about 2-3 times a week since the update and I have to restart my phone.
I bought the iPhone because I have always been treated so well by Apple. I had no idea I was buying a one year smart phone. Please provide some resolution to speed up the 3G. This phone was incredible and now it's a frustrating experience every time I use it. Not something I ever expected to say about an Apple product.

Jul 29, 2010 8:14 AM in response to Xplorer77by Stanton Blakeslee,For me the upgrade to IOS4 also took forever but eventually completed install successfully.
But since then I have experienced numerous problems:
1) The phone is very slow to respond to ANY and ALL touch or button input, sometime stalling completely on any touch-related commands whatsoever, then the app crashes
2) In many cases, upon opening an application, the app gets to the opening screen, stalls, does not load any data, then crashes....and these mostly Apple apps such as Mail, Messages, Phone, iPod, Safari, Calendar, Contacts, Notes, Settings
3) Many 3rd party apps that have been upgraded to iOS4 experience the same problem once opening, after stalling they crash completely
4) During the input of data through the keyboard, iOS4 crashes completely. Going dark then reappearing with the Apple icon boot screen, but never reboots
5) Battery life is miserable but I downloaded Battery Doctor, performed the maintenance, incorporated ALL tips, which have certainly reduced the functions of the phone that I found helpful but the battery life since then has improved greatly
6) While on the phone, the person I am speaking to experiences a period of static which becomes a signal to me that the phone app is about to crash---then it does exactly that. It does this at least once or twice a day from different geographic locations
7) Visual voicemail is lost at least twice a week which is restored with a reboot
These are the most annoying issues I have. I used to say, "I love my iphone. Couldn't live without it. Just hate AT&T because their coverage *****. Now I find my self saying, "This phone is useless, and I'm getting used to living without it.

the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.
I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones. -
Jul 29, 2010 8:17 AM in response to Xplorer77by Gerard_H,The only thing I can say is that I TOTALLY agree with everything written over here. It is a mess after upgrading. STEVE DO SOMETHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
Jul 29, 2010 8:17 AM in response to Xplorer77by spsmith48,I want to throw my hat in the ring and confirm that my iPhone 3g and my wife's 3GS have both been adversely impacted by the operating system upgrade. Slow response time, app crashes, inability to sync to my car's audio system, etc. etc. etc.
Hopefully we'll get a operating system patch to fix these issues, or else an Apple-approved way to go back to the old system. -
Jul 29, 2010 8:19 AM in response to Xplorer77by Mike Lois,wow... glad I found this thread - I'm having many of the issues noted here, slow response, freezing, ridiculously fast battery draining... I just thought that my phone/battery were just "wearing out" or something. Seeing that these symptoms may be caused by the new OS - while doing nothing to alleviate the frustration - at least gives me some hope that a fix will come out soon. That will at least make riding out the rest of my contract bearable.
This whole thing has been enough to make me turn in my Mac Fanboy card. I'm not sure what my next handset will be, but I'm more than certain it will not have anything to do with either Apple or ATT. -
Jul 29, 2010 8:30 AM in response to Xplorer77by frankieholiday,I am going in with all of the same issues with my Iphone 3G.
It was awesome before the OS upgrade to 4.0 etc and now it needs a FIX!!!
I will be very happy going back to OS3
Apple...please help.
