Apple please help!!!! -
Jul 29, 2010 10:29 AM in response to Xplorer77by Tom Mazzullo,Yes, this is ridiculous. They broke their old phone with a software update, and I have a year on my contract before I can upgrade, which would be asinine if that phone becomes non-functional before the contract is up. What's going on with Apple? Are they only after the gee-whiz release day sales and screw the long-term use of their products? -
Jul 29, 2010 10:37 AM in response to Xplorer77by Jeff Axup,I have been having the same problems with iPhone 3GS now that it's running OS4. In particular, the performance of notepad is now far too slow to actually write down a phone number or a todo item without stopping the conversation you're having at the same time. I want Apple to provide a way to revert to the old OS.
I wrote a blog entry going into the details:

Jul 29, 2010 10:43 AM in response to Jeff Axupby Christopher John Hunter, just tried Notes - as you say, too slow ... but, also, all my previous notes seem to have gone AWOL -
Jul 29, 2010 10:51 AM in response to Tom Mazzulloby SirPwyll,This may be a difficult issue to track down, as it doesn't seem to be affecting all 3G's. Case in point, my wife and I both have 3G's, bought refurbished at the same time. My upgrade has gone without a hitch and I am lucky enough to report that everything is working great without any of the problems being reported. My wife wasn't so lucky. After she upgraded, she felt like heaving the phone out the window. She finally did a full wipe and reloaded without restoring any data. After rebuilding her contacts list and resyncing her apps, she's happier with the performance (though my phone is still working better). Why the difference?
My theory is that the issue is likely an incompatibility with one of the sourced components in the iPhone. Something that isn't exactly the same between production runs. Hope they get it fixed soon. -
Jul 29, 2010 10:59 AM in response to Xplorer77by Stephen Henry,Me too! I hate to say anything bad about Apple but, my iPhone 3G is such a disappointment now with the IOS4 software. I wish they would have said the 3G was too slow for the upgrade and not allowed it. -

I agree with your workaround.
I had considerable performance issues with multiple phones. I applied the changes and performed a reset afterwards. No real issues . I asked users to post success / failure rates but I've only seen one or two so far.
After the iOS4 update all of your Spotlight Search options may have been selected.
On the 3G iPhone Go to SETTINGS> GENERAL> HOME BUTTON> SPOTLIGHT SEARCH
On the 3GS Go to SETTINGS> GENERAL> SPOTLIGHT SEARCH
De-select the search options you don't want (I just use messages notes). The more options selected the more processing / memory is used by your phone.
Reset Phone -
Group, Please let the forum know if this worked. It takes about a minute or so to do.
@kasaar,
A number of users have posted back regarding this "fix". For some, it helps, but it didn't work for me. Removing the spotlight options seems to reduce the sluggishness a bit, but it's not permanent. A hard-reboot also helps, but within a day or so, the buggy/sluggish performance returns. I've found that deleting most of my apps also helped to reduce the jerky/laggy performance.
The memory usage on my 3G has crept back up to 95+% -- that's with Spotlight indexing nothing more than my 100 or so contacts.
The spotlight trick doesn't restore the broken features. For example, the only option I have now for Passcode Lock is "Immediate". All of the timed options have vanished since installing iOSlow. -
Jul 29, 2010 11:10 AM in response to Xplorer77by wwweasd,OOOOo my iPhone 3G is now the slowest phone on earth. So many problems since I changed to OS4. Apple your seriously need to fix this. South Africa is behind with no iPhone 4 yet in sight.
I'm a pro Mac owner but this is seriously not the right move... I expect more from Apple -

Jul 29, 2010 11:57 AM in response to Xplorer77by JRPetrus,Just chiming in to help get Apple's attention. iPhone 3G performance running iOS 4.0 is embarrassing. Notepad is unusable. Answering a phone call is often impossible. Safari locks up for minutes at a time. All signs point to too much background processing. I can't believe I paid $500 for this phone thinking it would hold its value and age well like their PCs do. I refuse to upgrade to iPhone 4 until Apple proves that they won't make it obsolete in two years. -
Jul 29, 2010 12:07 PM in response to Xplorer77by Goriot,I have the same problem: iPhone 3G after upgrade to 4.0.1 software. Please fix this, Apple.
