Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

Another "me too". Upgrading to 4.0.1 and disabling spotlight helped somewhat, meaning my phone has gone from completely unusable to barely usable. The update and fix needs to come out YESTERDAY!

A friend just got her first iPhone (a 3G model), and her initial experience hasn't been positive, to say the least...

These phones are too old for the new stuff. Perhaps apple should not have made iOS 4 available for them.

You guys need to pony up and get an iPhone 4 or iPhone 3Gs.

    Reality check for yas'll.

that's just what many, maybe most, of us having been holding on to do - eg: early adopter contracts will have run out just a month or two before the iPhone 4 came out, so we've been on holding contracts & looking to order ... whilst keeping our current 3Gs up to date as updates were offered ...

none of us would have been upset had they not been offered and, in effect, were just innocently following Apple's advice ... until this !

Wrong. Speculation seems to be that a core Apple service or application (like spotlight or springboard) has a memory leak. Due to the low RAM of the 3G, the problem is exasperated.

The fact that so many people are pleased with the initial performance after a restore or reboot indicated that the hardware is capable, and it's just a software issue that needs to be addressed.

Rebooting due to memory leaks is something I thought I'd left behind when I migrated away from Microsoft... I really wish Apple would get their act together.

Why upgrade to a newer phone for $400 and another two year contract that has reception issues? I'll wait for 5G. In the meantime my 3G worked well until OS4. Apple needs to roll back to OS3 for the 3G to restore its functionality which was fine.

Are you kidding? In this economy?

Not everybody can afford to plunk down another X-hundred dollars for a new semi-working iPhone 4 right now.

    Because it 's the best?

    That's why.

If you live in a good coverage area, there's no better.

You don't have one, so semi-working from you is heresay.

I have one and I know.

If you don't like it get a 3Gs, which is not labeled semi-working at this time, although only a year ago in this forums it was labeled DOA.

    Understand?

I am just pointing out your options. If you can't afford one, get something else.

Do not upgrade your iPhone 3g to ios4. The new features aren't worth the drop in performance. The iPhone 3g is very slow after the update to ios4. If my iPhone 3g is only capable of so much before it starts lagging, then leave it alone! Updates are good if they keep the compatibility of the phone with itunes and other software up to date, but If I want more features that the iPhone 3g can't handle I'll buy a new iPhone. I almost upgraded to the iPhone 4 because of this, but then thought about the antenna issues and how that showed a further lack of commitment to quality on apples part. Secondly, what if the iPhone 4 lags after the latest update two years from now? The iPhone 4 antenna issue coupled with the iPhone 3g lag issue has lead me to search for a new smartphone that isn't made by apple. Avoid ios4 for now. Wait until apple fixes this issue.

Oh, I understand completely. You're just being snobbish and d---ish in the way you respond, not only to me, but to others on this thread. You sound arrogant and inconsiderate. I'm sorry if that sounds stupid to you.

I suspect Zebra1 is an Apple or ATT employee. The fact is for most of us on this blog is that Apple broke an otherwise very usable phone with an OS upgrade that offers very little benefit for 3G owners. Personally I would probably upgrade if there was not a reception issue and if I didn't have to lock in with ATT for another two years but that just isn't happening anytime soon.
