Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

I called Apple Support and spoke with a "Genius". She told me that I needed to try a restore and if that didn't work to take it to my nearest Apple store, which happens to be 45 minutes away, to run diagnostics on it. She said if they can find a problem they would replace the phone. I then asked if they would allow me to upgrade to a 3GS without a new contract and she said that she has not heard of that happening. So there you go, more deniability and more wasted time on my part to fix a problem they obviously caused with the OS4 update. I also asked if I could roll back the OS to version 3 and was told there is no way to do that.

i have two iphone 3g's on one phone(iphone A) i did a restore before updating to ios4 and that phone is working fine had not had any issues with is but on my other iphone(iphone b) i did the update and did not restore it first and it runs slow as **** all day every day since update, it doesnt matter what i am doing on the phone it all runs super freakin slow need a fix soon

"1. Turn off Spotlight Search: Go to Settings | General | Home Button | Spotlight Search, and uncheck everything
2. Reboot your iPhone 3G: Just a normal power down and restart
3. Turn Spotlight Search back on: Go back to same screen as step 1, and re-check everything you unchecked in Step 1"

It looks like it's some sort of problem with search. I followed those steps and my slowness problems were gone.

yep, that definitely made a difference ... wow ... hopefully it reached all the right places, for all apps, and fingers crossed that it'll last !

PS: wow indeed - it seems even better than it was before - which may be an illusion, brought on by the intervening trauma - it can't last !

Wow. Thank god I found this thread in a news article. I've been pulling out my hair trying to figure out what happened to my phone! I've reloaded/reset/reinstalled it twice already... I'm now ready for a fix. (That's pointed at you Apple). Can I have an OS bumper?

I see today that Apple have started to look at this issue.

I tried the tip from Rational Guy and it sped my 3G phone up considerably on IOS4. This suggests the slowness can be fixed by a software update to IOS4.

im also now seeing that Maps on my phone is ridiculously slow and is shows that I am around 3-5 miles away. Before this it maybe took 1 minute or so to exactly pin point my location. Now its crap from being so slow and not even giving me the correct location and i dont even bother using it. It will show me in a previous location 5 miles away.

Anyone else having this issue since iOS4 update?

Well, I went ahead and re-hacked to enable background tasks and wallpaper. Then I disabled Spotlight.

In about a day of use, it's just fine, and both Pandora in the background although Skype seems to get confused and the little "call in progress" red bar at the top, as well as audio, fades in and out when I'm on a call and I hop back to the home screen.

Restored my phone to 3.1.3 today. Sooooooooooo much better. The phone is actually usable again.

I am having nearly all of the same issues mentioned by others and am so frustrated with my phone that I am tempted to go out and buy an Android despite what used to be serious Apple brand loyalty.

So maybe this has already been answered, but can I revert my phone to the previous operating system without voiding the warranty on my phone?

There is a cost to all of this that is above and beyond that to our own limited pockets, as bad as that is. Getting rid of a perfectly good phone is a complete waste of everyone's resources.

I think we can use the assumption that this is a universal problem that affects all 3G iphones. Home remedies are a good way of alleviating the symptoms, but aren't really giving a cure to the pandemic.

Out of interest - does anyone know how many (otherwise) mechanically sound 3G iphones there are in circulation? 4 million? Any advance on that?

That's a lot of unhappy customers. Surely we can get a press conference? Time to boot up Keynote and get drafting SJ.

hey, guys - ours seems to be fixed, even on Maps & Camera, and now it's real slick, on everything we've tried so far (and hopefully it'll last) ... and it took just a few minutes, with no loss of data etc, so the Spotlight fix must be worth trying ...

however, there's a subtlety that was important, at least for our situation, as follows :

There are quite a bit of posts on here regarding this issue. I believe this may resolve your performance issues. After the iOS4 update all of your Spotlight search options may have been selected. There are many more search options in iOS4 than 3.0 - on the 3G iPhone go to :

Settings > General > Home Button > Spotlight Search

De-select the search options you don't want (I just use messages notes). The more options selected the more processing / more is used by your 'phone.

Reset 'phone - please let the forum know if this works ...

NB: we did the second one a day or two after doing the first, and tried other things in-between ...

now, I think, I can believe Apple were caught-out by this - ie: maybe it wasn't sloppy work they did, and maybe it's possible to understand that not all 'phones are affected !!

Having experienced very badly, *I have just performed two hard resets and the problem seems much improved.*

Anyone who hasn't done this already should: hold down the home and sleep/wake buttons until the swipe to power off appears. Keep holding them down - do not swipe - the phone will reset.

Do this twice.

Much improved performance as a result!
