Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

well, no need to fret, spend a few minutes doing this, and we've found it should be fine again :

Yes - tried this as well and it worked wonders. I wouldn't say that I'm 100% back to the snappy performance of OS 3.x, but pretty darn close after turning off Spotlight Search. Yikes, if it's that much of a memory/CPU hog, it should default to "off" on the 3G.

    Same problem here.

IPhone 3G is ridiculously slow and very frustrating to use and I will not buy an IPhone 4 just to fix this issue...

i have the same problem ...

my iphone 3g was running better with 3.1.3 rather than 4.0.1

    1)dropped calls increased tremendously.
    2)applications crash very frequently <native and 3rd party>
3)application performance is very slow .. it takes forever to open some application.

Getting so much frustrated day by day ..

Loosing all the respect about quality in apple products like iphone.

Apple's customer service seems to be surprized when i made them aware of this issue. It seemed that i was the only one observing so many instabilities ..

I hope they address this issue in the right way. Atleast they should allow me to go back to 3.1.3 without jailbreaking the phone.

In addition to the sloooooownesssssss, it is nearly impossible for me to complete a simple phone call. In the middle of the call I hear, "hello, hello" and realize the other person can not longer hear me. It can take 4 or 5 phone calls to get in the information that would normally be done in 3 to 5 minutes!!! I do notice however that my minutes are disappearing despite all the dropped calls! This is highway robbery. I left Sprint... I am thinking about returning to them. I pay much more for this service than I did with them... mmmm

This works... I'm now running 3.1.3 again and will continue to do so until Apple fixes this mess!

I agree! Given all of the recent screwups, Apple is starting to remind me of Toyota!

Give this a try, it worked for me! Spotlight search seems to be causing the problems.

Apple is quickly earning itself a reputation as having the worst support and least respect for its user community of any hardware manufacturer. It is not acceptable to tell users to revert to factory settings, given that one of the major selling points of the iPhone is the ability to download updates and the latest apps. Even Microsoft gives their users longer than 2 years before the latest OS brings their hardware to a halt and forces an upgrade.

I had updated to 4.0.1 and much to my dismay, my phone became almost useless and slow. Doing the hard resets only is a temp fix and the spotlight fix only helps a bit. Yes I did a clean restore and started from scratch. After a few days, I got fed up and restored back to 3.1.3 (Google is your friend). As much as I like the folder features and such, it is not work the headache and will stick to 3.1.3 until something is done to fix the issues for us 3G owners.

So I may have a functioning iPhone 3G.... I too have the slowness in iSLOW4, I mean iOS4.

I tried the hard reboot, that helped for like 10 minutes. Then I tried to disable Search Spotlight (unchecked all). That made no difference. I did the double hard-reset thing, that did nothing.

What did work for me was to disable MMS (and a hard reset). I did this two days ago and it has made a world of difference. I can't say if it's back 100% to it's v3 speed, but it is at least 95% better. Opening Safari, email, etc is all way faster. Opening the iPod app is slower than before, but I can live with that since everything else seems OK. The thing that's made me the mad is how Apple is thumbing their noses at us 3G owners, they aren't even officially recognizing the problem, even though this is one of the most popular discussions on the forum here. I feel like they're trying to get us to drop more cash on an iPhone 4. Shame on you Apple!

*So, if the Spotlight Search doesn't fix your problem, try disabling MMS.*

Go to Settings -> Messages -> MMS Messaging (turn this off)

Let us know if that helps.

thing is, you can turn Spotlight on again after, so it's not just taking memory - there's glitch the RationalGuy procedure fixes - just be careful to follow his procedure to the letter !!

Deeply disappointed with the effect of this update on my iPod touch. I was at a conference this week using it to take notes, browse wifi etc. This sort of thing used to be fine, now it didn't even make it through the day without the battery running out, so I was constantly shutting down and restarting only when needed. And when it did run it was unbelievably slow in almost everything. Pretty embarrassing to be jabbing away at it for ages trying to get anything to happen. A really disappointing experience.
