Aug 1, 2010 1:03 AM in response to ricardovnby Christopher John Hunter,no need to fret - we found, there's a cure that does pretty well, and takes just a few minutes with no loss of data ...
we found it's important to do all the steps - ie: uncheck all the Spotlight items (in Setttings / General / Home Button / Spotlight Search), then power down (Power button held down, slide to power off), then recheck as many Spotlight items as you like ... to get the full performance lift ...
after a few days, we found it suddenly slowed again, and we needed to power down (nothing more) again to regain the lift ...
give it a try !!

It is like in a car, every two days you would have to let all air out of the tyres and re pump them again to regain "normal" usability of the vehicle. -
Aug 1, 2010 8:01 AM in response to step_andyby Jonty71,Exactly, it's not a fix.
Thank you to all that have dug out ideas on how to improve for short lengths of time the OS4 faults, but, with all due respect, it's not a fix and we still have the issue at hand which Apple (not it's users) should have fixed by now. These iPhone 3G models which were on sale/and still on sale, what exactly are we paying for here? You buy a mobile phone to work, not to be messing around for lengths of time with it's software to make a phone call. I'm not bothered if techie's like that sort of thing, but 9/10 people use a phone for a reason - because it's a phone. Maybe Apple should look that up and take note. -
Aug 1, 2010 8:51 AM in response to Xplorer77by rempedaal,The update completely ruined my iPhone 3G. It is excruciatingly slow now. It takes an average of 60-80 seconds for my text messages to show on the screen after I press the messages icon. And sometimes it even crashes back to home before I even get to see my messages. Also, when the phone has been in my pocket for a while and I want to swipe to unlock, it takes 5-10 seconds for it to register my swipe. Many apps crash to home when starting up an app, so you have to start it up again to work. If I want to go into my contacts list I have to wait around 20 seconds, same goes for pressing the phone icon, it takes about 15 seconds before something happens. When people call me, my phone starts ringing, but it takes 5 seconds for their name or number to show up on the screen.
I have six friends who have the 3G, and we all have the exact same problems. Such a shame, such a great phone, also such a shame that over a month has gone by without a fix for these issues or a statement by Apple, two of my friends have switched to using an Android-phone out of pure frustration. I'm giving it a few more weeks, but I must admit my patience is running thin as well. -
Aug 1, 2010 9:35 AM in response to Xplorer77by MrFixitCT,my 3G was rendered all but useless after iOS 4 "upgrade" , telephone tech support told me, off the record, only way to revert to 3.1.3 was to jailbreak it.. I'm running win7 so haven't been able to get recboot to function yet... double hard reboot has helped some but this move by apple may well have changed my mind on my next phone.. not to mention iTunes ***** from a user friendly point of view.. -
Aug 1, 2010 11:21 AM in response to Howardswebby IphoneSickensMe,My Iphone 3GS was wonderful.
Without warning of the consequences I stupidly updated the system to 4. Big mistake.
Now the 3GS is runreliable and slow. All of the negative aspects posted by others here are present on my phone.
The IPHONE is a magnificent invention, byt Apple should not have wasted the time on telephony. Paid Skype is fine enough.
So, APPLE - I've been using Macintosh since system 3 and I am extremely upset that you have injured the 3GS in this way. Backward compatibility with full functions "as was" is preferable to your stupid nested folders.
Yes, I have an IPHONE 4G - bought it on the first day. I HATE IT. Lousy reception, one or two bars were there used to be 4. It's a piece of crap as a phone. Sound inferior to 3GS and no, I'm not sticking things in my ears, but you can shove your Iphone up Steve Job's ***. -
Aug 1, 2010 12:01 PM in response to Xplorer77by hdstark,Let me add that not only has my iPhone 3G gone into slow mode but now the battery power level icon always shows '100%' charged right up to the point when the phone turns itself off because the battery is drained. I did the IOS4 update to 4.0.1 this morning no change to slow or battery indicator but the signal strength bars now seem to be correct. Perhaps next month another fix? Sure hope Apple is not going down the Microsoft path of arrogance. -

function for the unit will return normal -
Aug 1, 2010 1:26 PM in response to Xplorer77by sjm19,I took the spotlight search off, it didn't really make much difference at all. Come on Apple hurry admit there is a problem and hurry up with a proper fix. -
Aug 1, 2010 1:37 PM in response to Xplorer77by Andre Leite,Same issue over here. I have both the iPhone 3G and the 3GS, factory unlocked, and it means I have paid the full price. I can confirm you that I have the same issue affecting my iphone 3G. After the OS 3.1.2 update to iOS 4.0, it got really slow. Sometimes it just freezes or reboots itself. Till I see it solved I won't buy any of the iPhone 4, 4x, iPad 1.x, 2.x, or whatever. I don't like the idea that every time Apple releases a new product, the previous version is put on a low priority basis regarding the OS security fixes / updates / testing. It seems that the iOS 4 wasn't tested at all on the iphone 3G before its release. It's unacceptable. -
Aug 1, 2010 2:07 PM in response to Andre Leiteby mac7knee,Oh dear. Me and my family (3 iPhone 3G users) are in the same boat.
I just really want to whine at apple right now.
I've been in IT for 30 years and I've never seen an upgrade where the company's OWN software applications DON'T work on their OWN hardware.
This is an absolute shambles and removes all credibility that apple had in any sort of backward compatibility.
Disgraceful, poor management, rush to market drove atrocious shortcuts in testing cycle.
What's happening over there apple? Get some stronger QA and test managers who can stand up to your marketing department.
Disgusting and arrogant corporate behavior - someone should get fired.

Aug 1, 2010 2:40 PM in response to Xplorer77by Linzyll,I have gone back to v 3.1.3 and it is such a relief. My phone would not go onto my Wifi - saying the code was incorrect (it wasn't). This just happened today for some reason - so I have had enough of OS 4.01.
If you are having trouble downgrade as I did. -
Aug 1, 2010 2:50 PM in response to Linzyllby TaKiz,Most people write down that the OS 4.0 wasnt thoroughly tested for our 3g phones.
From my point of view this might have happened:
Apple sat down, took pencils and calculated - estimated demand and income:
- How many $ will we lose from ******-up 3g users that will choose to go to HTc or Nokia or whatever else ?
- How many $ will we earn from users that will buy iphone4 no matter what ?
- The $ from users bying iphone 4 is bigger than what we will lose from disappointed users that will abandon iphone. So we will launch OS4.0 because financially it will profit the company in the end.
Business.End of story.
P.S. Whatever the truth is, i really hope Apple surprise us and allows us to downgrade or makes a fix for our useless iphones 3G. Iphone 3G is now a product to be put in a display case on a shelf and be treated like an antique, like a retro phone in 20-30 years from now. -
Aug 1, 2010 3:06 PM in response to TaKizby andrevalente,It's just a shame that there is no official word from Apple... a simple "we're working on that" would suffice! -

Well, I tried the Spotlight Search fix and immediately saw an improvement. That was a few days ago and everything is still fine. I have no issues with my 3G on IOS4 at all right now, I made this post on it!
