Aug 1, 2010 3:48 PM in response to Xplorer77by Black Curtains,I also have an iphone 3G. Major slow down after the upgrade. I understand that this wonderful phone can do email, internet, texting, etc... but first and foremost it is a phone. When I MISS CALLS because the OS cannot respond quick enough to answer the call.. then I consider this a major problem for me. I have all of the same issues that many others have posted above but when I cannot answer calls... My girlfriend also has an iphone 3G and her phone has also slowed down considerably (though not as slow as mine).
I have just tried the "spot light" fix that someone suggested above but as of right now I do not see that as improving my situation as of yet. -

It's just a shame that there is no official word from Apple... a simple "we're working on that" would suffice!
An announcement of a fix coming up won't happen because that would acknowledge an actual problem. The recent "We're looking into it" is about as close as it will get. -
Aug 1, 2010 4:23 PM in response to Howardswebby jortuno,I'm another 3G user who upgraded to iOS 4 and 4.0.1 and have regretted doing so for the last few weeks.
Some of the issues that I've been experiencing are dropped calls, unable to answer incomming calls (can't swipe the answer button!), very, very slow performance using apps, both iOS 4-ready apps, and those that are provided by Apple.
I've done clean installations (not upgrade), set up the phone as "new" in iTunes, used a Mac and PC to do the restore, etc., but still continue to have issues.
The only way that I found to downgrade to 3.1.3 was to use jailbreaking software and doing so. I didn't like that because some apps wouldn't work under the jailbroken phone (Apple Remote), the apps would start up, and shut off.
I upgraded again to 4.0.1 because needed my phone, but will look at downgrading options again.
I want a solution provided by Apple to downgrade to 3.1.3 - not Googling and using third party software to do so. Apple should allow us to downgrade without users needing to do "hacks" on their phones!
The amount of signal bars has also been affected. I get one or two bars indoors, while my wife - still on 3.1.2, gets full bars. I experience dropped calls like never before, she does not.
This is clearly an OS issue! Problems that have risen that were not there before, which can only be attributed to the software upgrade.
Apple, FIX IT! I already submitted feedback, and hope to hear from Apple soon. -
Aug 1, 2010 4:28 PM in response to Black Curtainsby 3g&iOS4makesmesad,I'm having many of the problems that others are having running iOS4 on my 3g iPhone. A couple of my major issues:
-- missing calls because the phone is so slow (just like that spoof/truth video on youtube)...it's even worse when I'm use Bluetooth in my car.
-- I can no longer use Pandora, it crashes within 15 minutes. This really annoys me because I used to listen to several hours of Pandora each day
-- the map app is just about useless due to extreme latency.
-- the camera is so slow now that any event I want to photograph has already transpired by the time the phone is ready to take a phone (seriously, it now takes longer for it to go from off-to-photo (more than 10 seconds) than any camera I've owned.
-- Apple gave no indication that the iOS4 would ruin the nice features of my 3G. Being able to answer calls is a CORE COMPETENCY FOR A PHONE, no OS that will affect this functionality should be released!
Apple: I need this fixed or I need a convenient way to go back to a stripped OS that works. The iPad I bought last month may be the last Apple product I buy...and I certainly won't be recommending iPhones to anyone until this is fixed.
unhappy Apple customer -
Aug 1, 2010 4:43 PM in response to Xplorer77by ataylor87,so i did as some people found with going to Settings>General>Home Button and unchecking and then powering off and back on or resetting the iPhone and then turning everything back on but after a couple days now its the same being slow and laggy and everything again. This is annoying!!! -
Aug 1, 2010 5:41 PM in response to Xplorer77by Kav1001,OS4 is a disgrace on the 3G. Since I updated the ipod fails to launch half the time, safari freezes up, I miss calls if im using apps, my notes wont save, apps wont start and are too slow to use when they do and the entire system stutters and crashes like an epileptic hurdler.
Was this even tested on a 3G? If it was how could they possibly have the cheek to tell 3G owners this dreadful OS is an 'update'? Its backdated my iphone into an LG Viewty!
I expected so much more from Apple. It really is unacceptable that this OS has been released to 3G users. Ishows complete disregard for long term customers -
Aug 1, 2010 7:22 PM in response to Xplorer77by jpedlhuber,I hope Apple is listening to all of the customers they "love."
An Apple rep told me my best option would be to upgrade to the Iphone 4 and then I wouldn't have these issues. Not exactly what I was looking for. -
Aug 1, 2010 8:55 PM in response to Xplorer77by badappleseed,Someone said the iPhone4's interface is like hot butter, my iPhone3G's after 4.0 update is like cold peanut butter!
- Very slow to reboot
- Home button doesn't always respond to the first click.
- Opening albums, interface is just a screenshot of last state, take 2-3 seconds to refresh and become touchable.
- Camera opening time.....(long after the moment is gone)
- Calendar also takes 3-4 seconds to become touchable after opening.
- When opening safari, bookmarks always popup first as home screen.
- Maps is now only accurate to 300 meters.
- Apps crashing regularly...YES
- Phone crashing on answering incoming call...YES
- Apps failing to even open...YES
- Skype...Unusable
- iPod 3-4 seconds to open with NO music in it.
- Keyboard touches registering sometimes after ten inputs.
- Safari, awful to use, slow to render webpages, zoom lag, pinching mistaken as other commands.
I greatly regret upgrading to OS4 to the extent that I don't want another iPhone particularly when I feel forced into having to upgrade because my existing iPhone has been made unusable by an official update from Apple -
Aug 1, 2010 9:40 PM in response to cliffby DJzamarillo,Talked to an AppleCare tech today to see what he could tell me about any updates coming up. I was having all the 4.slow problems everybody else was having last week and had enough of it. Since then my 3G somehow went back to 3.1.3 lol bt I digress... He said the upcoming 4.1 os that is actually out for developers right now is supposed to clean up the proximity sensor issue for the iPhone4 and just might have something to help the processor of the 3G deal with the strain of the newer os.
But those are just words, I'm waiting for actions to back up their talk and give people back the confidence they might have lost during this whole "focus on i4's problems and ignore the problems of the 3g for a couple months" thing -
Aug 1, 2010 10:01 PM in response to Xplorer77by djjames,All my contacts are gone, my mail accounts gone and I can't connect to a mobile phone carrier. Basically iOS4 for 3G = iPod Touch.
I can't believe this has happened. -
Aug 1, 2010 11:01 PM in response to Xplorer77by Dana W,Got all my speed back after the downgrade, just lost my personal settings, some notes I had taken that I didn't think I needed to back up, and ..... Can't recall now, but I have a me.com subscription, so nothing really important was lost.
Try the link to the downgrade, it works just fine and you will get your old phone back. I tried the first 4.0 upgrade, which went smoothly, but the speed issue wasn't worth the few extra features that the 3G would acquire.
Might get a new iphone this year, will wait to see what shakes out with the antenna thing.
Do the downgrade, you will be happy you did! -
Aug 1, 2010 11:11 PM in response to Xplorer77by calle68,I'm just wondering why I upgraded my 3G to iOs4 ... It seems like there is a background process that drains all the CPU ... Every operation has an initial delay which makes the phone unusable. Safari is the slowest mobile browser. Opening the iPod app takes a loooong time ... I do not want to got and get a iPhone 4 only because Apple screwed my 3G. -
Aug 2, 2010 1:04 AM in response to Dana Wby NotGuilty,i would like to tell everyone here, welcome the club of unusable iPhone 3G with IOS 4.x
the good thing about Apple, they are still allowing downgrade, i mean allowing signatures for 3.1.3.
downgrading is the on SOLUTION till now. -
Aug 2, 2010 1:53 AM in response to Xplorer77by JTLT,I'm here to support this thread.
I have all the problem discussed here.
Sometimes I can't even pick up the call. Took 5 swipes to answer the call. And the call drops.
Ever since upgrade to ios4, my iPhone 3G becomes useless.
Regret to upgrade, and apple calls this "make customers happy"
I'd think it's a conspiracy to force us to buy iPhone 4. -
Aug 2, 2010 2:17 AM in response to ataylor87by Christopher John Hunter, quite agree- we've found the cure (*) works, but has to be applied again every now & then (first time was three days later, in our case), because of a sudden relapse ...
can't believe how Apple is handling this - very poorly, and in such contrast to how it nearly always does things !
at a family gathering over the weekend, we were asked what we'd recommend for someone's first computer - for video conferencing & e-mails, and surfing, and ... hmm, difficult one to answer !
