Aug 2, 2010 9:01 AM in response to Xplorer77by cap10subtext,I have to voice my concern as well my 3G is not as bad as other reports for some things, but worse for others. I can speak confidently for at least two other people who have long been supporters of apple who have upgraded their perfectly functional iPhone 3G to 4.0.1 and felt like they'd destroyed their phone. Stuttery playback, skipping sounds, three second lag after any response, including home screen scrolling. We have a JVC sound system with twin docks which has always worked well. Both my wife's iPod touch and my 3G now play garbled staticy noise when the phone hibernates, when they used to playback beautifully.
I urge apple to re-examine this situation. If the solution is downgrading, so be it. Apple should provide an easy way to do this and continue to support 3.X much as they've done with OSX in the past (ie supporting leopard since snow leopard doesn't work on PPC). Otherwise, I can only hope that Apple understands how betrayed so many users feel and seriously investigate how to fix this for 3G users who will not simply go buy a new iPhone. They'll just stop buying Apple. -
Aug 2, 2010 9:06 AM in response to Xplorer77by Linkeex,Probably apple will not fix this issue because there are only 0,5% of the users complaining, therefor they just give free ramsticks for every iphone 3g because they love their users -
Aug 2, 2010 9:15 AM in response to andycjbby jshort,This is copied from Apple's own 4.01 web page:
Compatibility
iOS 4 works with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 3G. Not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking is available only with iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS. -
Aug 2, 2010 9:20 AM in response to jshortby cliff,As I mentioned in another thread, without a comprehensive corporate policy on something like this, answers, solutions, and speculations will be all over the place. Especially with company employees. -
Aug 2, 2010 9:20 AM in response to Xplorer77by Pierre Degaillande1,I'M HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. THIS IS THE STRAW THAT BREAKS THE CAMEL'S BACK. APPLE IS JUST STRAIGHT UP ROBBING PEOPLE WITH THIS. -
Aug 2, 2010 9:25 AM in response to Xplorer77by davismac@comcast.net,Mine is exxtreeeemely slow and I have rebooted and tried everything... I guess it is time for I-4 -
Aug 2, 2010 10:10 AM in response to Xplorer77by cola79,Is your iPhone 3G with iOS4 faster or slower than mine?
Messages: opens in 4 seconds
Pandora: on 3G begins playing music in 11 seconds
Mail: opens almost instantly, less than one second.
Facebook: opens in 4 seconds
Camera: ready to take a picture in 3 seconds
These times were recorded AFTER opening the program one or two times. It is NOT the time for the initial launch. -

Almost exactly the speed on my phone. The times are slower than I seem to remember from iOS 3, but especially Mail (and Safari) are much quicker than they were during 4.0 pre-4.0.1 for me. I consider my current overall speed "bad but acceptable". -
Aug 2, 2010 10:50 AM in response to Magnus Lewanby Pierre Degaillande1,These are very slow times. With the original 3.1.1 OS, programs opened immediately, maybe one second lag. This is unacceptable for a phone that is supposed to be the industry leader. -
Aug 2, 2010 11:08 AM in response to Xplorer77by loslobas,Absolutely ridiculous. I feel robbed and there isn't anything I can do for another year when my contract runs out.
I can't get over how painfully slow it is to do anything on it.
It's a way of killing off us 3G users so we upgrade to the iPhone 4 - a complete conspiracy :-/ -
Aug 2, 2010 11:13 AM in response to loslobasby Pierre Degaillande1,I recommend restoring to the 3.1.1 OS as detailed in the post above. It seems to really work. Besides that, this is really a good argument for unlocking , jailbreaking, and in any other way f*ing with apple the way they f**k with their customers. -
Aug 2, 2010 11:28 AM in response to Pierre Degaillande1by kybdguy,As I do not have days to read all 51 pages I just want to add my story. Before I start, however, I want to personally thank Apple for turning my most used electronic device into a very expensive paper weight. Until updating to iOS4 I absolutely LOVED my iPhone. For the first week after updating my phone worked great. Then, for reasons unknown to me the phone started to experience problems. It completely locks up and does not respond to home key press, power button, holding both buttons down ect. When web pages are loading I cannot move the screen to see already downloaded information. While using apps like Pandora, when I try and exit the app, the phone trys to Multitask where the pandora music plays in the background for 30 seconds or more and renders the phone unresponsive during that time. When I make calls the screen goes blank and does not let me know who I am calling. -

In some surreal parallel universe, if people were iPhones, we are currently witnessing the mass euthanasia of all those of us over 40 regardless of physical or mental condition. iOS4 might have well been a virus for what it has done to us - overnight we have become sick, slow, forgetful, slurred, crippled and ready for the ground to open up for us. Landfill. Carbon footprint.
Make way for the next generation.
Enough is enough.
BREAK THE SILENCE !
Apple - we know you are listening. For a start you monitor for T&C violation on the forums. And any multinational would be foolish to not use customer forums as a barometer of the market. We know you ARE listening.
Here's what you do:
1) Get a press release out and a link on the homepage explaining the situation. An acknowledgment of the problem alone will at least calm tempers. "we know it's a problem, we've got our best people working round the clock to put it right.' sort of thing. A timescale would be nice, but if that is not possible - at least let us know that you are working on it.
2) Get an optimised OS out there for the 3G. Even if you have to create a new team of developers and run an OS parallel with iOS4. Get it out there.
3) Make a public assurance that the 3G will receive a reasonable period of general software support FROM THE DATE THAT THE MODEL IS WITHDRAWN FROM SALE. I would see this as being 2 years.
4) Say sorry.
I have been a devoted Apple fan for over two decades. I have spent much of my hard earned cash on Macs for home, and used them in every salaried post I've been in. I have single handedly spread the word and converted dozens of friends, family and complete strangers from Windows to Mac. All for no fee, just for the love of the product and the Apple philosophy. This last year has been awful as an Apple customer.
Shame on you. -
Aug 2, 2010 11:34 AM in response to kybdguyby kybdguy,Basically, to finish up I agree with some of what I have read in this forum. Apple either needs to fix iOS4 to work with the iPhone 3G or they need to make it easy to go back to the last version that worked well with the 3G. I completely understand that I have an old device that isn't as powerful as a 3GS or 4 but I feel Apple should not of provided an upgrade for a device that was not capable of handling the upgrade. Especally since I cannot upgrade do to my contract with AT&T not being eligable yet. So I am in the camp of fix me quickly and I will be happy, but if you do not make it easy for me to get my phone back I will not upgrade to a newer iPhone in the future. -
Aug 2, 2010 12:39 PM in response to Xplorer77by redwinger, anyone know how to use this lifehacker if your sleep button on top of phone doesn't work anymore? I'd love to try to revert back to os 3, but my sleep/power down button hasn't worked in a long time. I'm currently using this phone as an itouch, but it's painfully slow and I barely use it except for a few games that I don't have on my current phone.
