Aug 2, 2010 12:40 PM in response to Xplorer77by govatos,I'm really upset about this update. The fact that Apple gave me "you didn't have to upgrade" as a solution, while AT&T said that I should just buy a newer phone, is totally unacceptable. I can't downgrade to 3.1.3 without losing data I want to keep (such as my text message archive), and I shouldn't have to.
There's nothing wrong with creating newer tech that has more usefulness. It's a crime, however, to intentionally cripple an older model to encourage an upgrade. Fix it. -
Aug 2, 2010 12:57 PM in response to Xplorer77by ggoswami,I am having great trouble with my iphone after updating it to 4.0.1. Is there a way to downgrade. I think 4.0 is not good for 3G.

Aug 2, 2010 1:27 PM in response to Xplorer77by Murphy66,My iPhone 3G is sitting in the drawer after the update to iOS 4. Absolutely unusable, slow, missing calls, total annoyment. Luckily I had a spare Nokia which I use now. Apple stuff? Never again.... -
Aug 2, 2010 1:37 PM in response to Xplorer77by rapten,I am extremely frustrated by IOS4 and have been looking into options for a new non-iPhone. I have loved my iPhone until I got this ridiculous update, which took about 15 tries to install, but I was sure it would be worth it (I had not yet heard any warnings from anyone). Now, the touch screen is severely delayed in responding to my touch, applications won't open or they close immediately after opening, I can't charge using my wall or car charger (I can only charge via my MacBook), and, perhaps worst of all, I constantly have trouble answering calls.
I don't want to have to get a new phone, but if this problem goes unresolved and I do buy a new one, it unfortunately won't be an iPhone. -
Aug 2, 2010 2:43 PM in response to govatosby PN0ISE,Don't downgrade. If anything, data loss is the least of your worries. I have read of many times of crashes for people who tried this option. Reverting back to an older OS is not possible and it says thats before you update. I use my phone for the music and some apps. Thought about throwing/selling it because even using it on music docks won't work. -
Aug 2, 2010 4:25 PM in response to Xplorer77by UDart,"slow performance " is an understatement! I can't believe Apple didn't test this thoroughly before the release, and if they did, how they could have felt this was an acceptable level of performance degradation! My 3G phone is less than a year old, but it performs like a 5 year old Laptop running Microsoft XP! Was this a tactic to motivate users to upgrade to the 4G? Sounds like a Microsoft move to me!
I've been on many boards and have tried several of the 'Fixes', including the full restore, turning off spotlight searches, double reset, etc. Don't waste your time, none of them work. Your best bet is to downgrade the operating system. -

The latest issue of MacLife has a good article describing the many 3G problems experienced by their editors, and steps you can take that may resolve them.

Aug 2, 2010 5:09 PM in response to kybdguyby Pierre Degaillande1,Use this to downgrade to 3.1, it works.

The only problem is that I had to restore my phone and it started from scratch, but all of my pertinent stuff (contacts, aps, photos) was backed up.
Unfortunately i think the only way to punish Apple for this blatant abuse of their customers is to stop buying their products. My love for Apple has gone out the Windows. -
Aug 2, 2010 7:03 PM in response to Xplorer77by nmarce,Is there a way to go back to 3.1.1? The phone is slow now. Some apps stopped working totally. The network connection is sketchy. Email editing is different. Email is very very slow.

Aug 2, 2010 7:25 PM in response to Xplorer77by Revteck,I have to say I loved my iphone! (Notice it's in past tense) I must have sold 4 maybe 5 due to the bragging of how much I liked it. Now I feel I have been hung out to dry! I now only use my iphone to make calls because the rest hardly works! I'm sorry to all the people I recommended the phone to. Most are in the same boat I am! How can a company let something like this happen! NO a better question would be how does a company like apple just let the concerns go unresolved? Do they think I'm going to upgrade? LOL! This has shaken my confidence in apple to the point I no longer look at the ipad as my next big electronic purchase! I most likely will not purchase any more apple products. I don't want to invest in a company that does this and doesn't fix their screw up! how long has it been? At least a month or close to it! I have my life on this phone and I'm ******! and even more that this is not fixed yet! how long are they going to leave us hang. -
Aug 2, 2010 8:33 PM in response to Xplorer77by Joy Dewing,Throwing my hat into this 3-ring circus... I am yet another victim of the forced upgrade.

Aug 2, 2010 7:40 PM in response to Xplorer77by Frocktar,Ive tried the various fixes, but it still remains virtually unusable. Ive gone from loving my iphone to nearly hating it. Its just worth the frustration of trying to send a text or browse the net as it just keeps getting stuck, sometimes taking 10sec to type a single letter. Unless this is fixed there isno way i will shell out for an iphone 4. Im sure it works fine on that phone, but its the principal of the thing. Everyone i know who has a 3g has the exact same issue with ios4, so how could they not have known? impossible, to say otherwise is just plain crap. -
Aug 2, 2010 9:01 PM in response to Modelerby rx100,Reboot, spotlight changes etc. are temporary fixes. These works only for couple minutes. I installed memory scan app and free some memory. The response was faster for couple minutes, until memory dropped from 15MB to 2MB.
I recently got Macbook Pro, which crashed 20+ times in first 2 months and now competing neck-to-neck with my iphone in sluggishness. Will try to go back to 3.1.3. Hope that will fix the problem.
APPLE: You should at least tell us (PUBLICLY) if you are planning any patch/update to fix this issue.
