Aug 2, 2010 9:44 PM in response to Xplorer77by Tim Hodgson,My iPhone is next to useless after "updating" to IOS4. I've restored it to make sure it's not some other problem, but it is SLOW. I've missed phone calls because the "slide to unlock" button won't respond AT ALL when I try to get a call. And the other functions are so slow to respond, that I just don't even want to use it. Sure, I'm planning on getting a new phone, but this really makes me angry that this phone works so poorly. Apple really dropped the ball on this one. Note, I'm an Apple fan. I've bought countless Macs for my business over the last 20 years through thick and thin. Apple servers, laptops, workstations, monitors, iPhones, etc. --- just so you know that I'm not some cranky PC person railing against Apple. This issue is really disappointing. -
Aug 2, 2010 11:38 PM in response to Joy Dewingby TominKona,Any suggestions of an appropriate alternative forum where we can pursue this apparently necessary option?? Seems like we need to get their attention somehow!!

Aug 3, 2010 12:56 AM in response to Xplorer77by 77Zeus,Ever since upgrading my iPhone 3G to iOS4 it ran very sluggish, but when I looked up my IMEI number with *#06# it's running very smooth again! -
Aug 3, 2010 1:32 AM in response to 77Zeusby Modeler,What I don't quite understand is how some handsets are unusable while others seem to be fine. Mine was noticeably unresponsive, scrolling became jerky and the lag times were noticeable in games such as Worms. Typing on the keyboard was hampered by a split-second latency but it still worked as a phone.
After trying the Spotlight fix last Friday, everything seems fine and I haven't had to do it again. Dragon's Lair was unplayable before the Spotlight fix, now it's fine. Maps works perfectly as well, camera is as quick to launch as 3.1.3... I'm not trying to rub it in, just wanted to say I'm having a good experience with iOS 4 on the 3G since the Spotlight fix and would like to help find a fix for those who aren't.
I'm tempted to do a factory reset on mine to see if it goes back to its previous lag-ridden state, but as it's working fine now I'd like to keep it that way. -
Aug 3, 2010 2:56 AM in response to D.R.C.by Christopher John Hunter, latest issue of MacLife has a good article describing the many 3G problems experienced by their editors, and steps you can take that may resolve them ...
unfortunately, the catch is in step 1 - backups - which will especially affect those who have both trusted Apple to sort this & careful to have both sync'd with iTunes & cleared-out their Trash since updating ...

My issue is with using a third party utility on the phone. I don't like the idea of that, and won't take the chance of compromising my phone... -
Aug 3, 2010 3:50 AM in response to Xplorer77by Trev Ver 1.0,Used to love my iphone 3g now i hate it. The sluggishness is a nightmare & the fact that half the time i cant even answer calls anymore is a complete joke.
Tried the double reboot, uncheck spotlight etc & while they do help for the short term they dont fix the problem of my phone leaking memory so it just takes a while longer before it turns into a brick again.
It been over a month now & still had nothing from apple addressing this issue which shows a total lack of customer care.
My contract is up end of the month & after this crap my next phone wont be the iphone 4g anymore -
Aug 3, 2010 5:28 AM in response to DCIFRTHSby Christopher John Hunter, there you go, you (like us) are trusting Apple, as we did when we upgraded ...
hmmm, beginning to wonder .... -
Aug 3, 2010 5:45 AM in response to Xplorer77by HOKIEFRIES,My annoyance with this issue is getting so bad that i'm about to go back to verizon when my contract is up. I tolerated the dropped calls because I love this phone but now that NOTHING works properly I"m about done with APPLE. Way to turn into Microsoft and release sub-par technology Jobs. -
Aug 3, 2010 5:48 AM in response to HOKIEFRIESby simtub,ios4 is slow on the 3GS because it will make users fed up and want to upgrade to an iPhone 4 having given the oppurtunity to use ios4. A bit like a demo version but you can't experience the full thing until you upgrade. Tactical Marketing...grrr -
Aug 3, 2010 6:31 AM in response to simtubby kipperATregis,my 3G is slow too, the slide to answer function when a call comes in is so laggy I don't know if i've answered the phone or not and have had several occasions where the phone was so overwhelmed it just gave up and goes back to the home screen. did a factory reset (PITA, shouldn't have to do that) and it's still slow and clumsy. This is not a new problem, old hardware running new software will always be slow, please give us an easy way to downgrade to the old OS -
Aug 3, 2010 6:31 AM in response to Xplorer77by tipsmcc,THis is HORRIBLE - the phone is so slow - I did the reset and manual resync at one of the stores and it still is terrible!!! ALSO the Find my Phone App does not work. All the settings are correct - it just doesn't work.
Which was too bad when i misplaced my phone....
What was the point in forcing people to upgrade to a system that stinks? -
Aug 3, 2010 6:31 AM in response to Xplorer77by mbwolfe,Why don't I see any replies from Apple about all the problems 3G users are having with i OS 4.0. Seems like they would be concerned about fixing it. Both mine and my wife's have many of the same issues discussed here since upgrading. I've tried all the suggestions (short of reverting back to i OS 3), no joy. -
Aug 3, 2010 7:20 AM in response to Howardswebby RickInHouston,I gave up on my 3G because of the slowing to a crawl. Picked up an Evo. I received the over the air update of the OS. Full flash support. AMAZING! Apple needs to rethink its position on flash. Running the top ten flash sites on the internet is mindblowing that a phone can do it! Wake up Apple. -
