It is a rediculous scam on the part of Apple to upgrade OS 4.0 for Iphone 3G.
If that were true, all 3G handsets would be crippled by the update. As far as I can gather the symptoms (and the effectiveness of the proposed cure) vary wildly between users. -
Aug 5, 2010 7:59 AM in response to Modelerby nirelandguy,Its all well and good downgrading to 3.1.3 but more and more I am beginning to see apps that only work with 4.0 -
Aug 5, 2010 11:33 AM in response to Xplorer77by mlpugs,I also experienced a slow iphone after upgrading to ios4.
Now my iphone is fast again and the battery life is good, but there is still some strangeness with the battery METER (battery life is ok, but it sometimes looks like the thing is not taking a charge)
I originally upgraded by the backup and upgrade option, and my 3.xx version of the software was at the time jailbroken. This backup and upgrade took FOREVER and when it was done the iphone was super slow. I suspect that this process doesn't work well on jailbroken software. So after a few days I synced my iphone and then did a full restore, and set it up as a new iphone. This process is much, much faster. Make sure you have transfered all of your iphone camera pictures to your computer as well as voice recordings, etc. Anything that doesn't transfer in a regular sync. you will of course have to manually enter your desired settings, since it is treated as a new iphone.
But, my iphone was still quite slow - somewhat faster than after the first upgrade, but much slower than it had been under 3.x.x
I found the solution in another thread :
Do 2 hard resets and the iphone is restored to its previous speed. Didn't really believe this would help, but I can afford to waste 10 minutes...
Hold down both POWER and HOME buttons, ignore the message to turn off, and wait until the phone shuts down. Wait 15 seconds, start up the iphone again. When it is up and running, do the same thing again.
This really did help! My iphone is acceptably fast again. -
Aug 5, 2010 12:43 PM in response to Xplorer77by Gatorpro,So I tried the restore option and restored it to the backup I did previously. Phone still runs slow, apps crash, sms keyboard doesn't keep up and on and on and on. Too many things that do not work right to mention. How could Apple do something like this to us loyal iPhone users. I do not think that I will upgrade to the iPhone 4 now. I wish that I could go back to the previous operating system. Think that I will just end my subscription with AT&T and switch over to the Droid unless Apple fixes this problem soon. Hello Apple are you listening? or do you just not care what customers are experiencing. -
Aug 5, 2010 12:54 PM in response to Gatorproby Rebsola,Just told my neighbor about the problem and apples approach or lack there of to the fix. He went with the droid yesterday. I was going to get an iPad for the wife. Not now. I'm moving to Droid. At least an acknowledgment and timeframe would be appreciated. My phone is useless. I cringe when I look at my ATT bill. -
Aug 5, 2010 12:58 PM in response to Xplorer77by pterfloth,I have tried any and all suggestions to restore speed to my 3G with no lasting success after the upgrade to iOS4/4.01. Despite the long list of complaints on this forum Apple continues to recommend the upgrade to iOS4 for 3G owners. Apples shoddy and dishonest handling of the upgrade and the iPhone 4 problems makes me a former iPhone fan. I will not purchase an iPhone 4 and will likely not purchase another iPhone in the future when my contract runs out next year. -
Aug 5, 2010 1:47 PM in response to Xplorer77by jBengtson,Really Apple? For years I have been an avid Apple supporter. Lately... not so much. The iPhone and all it's supposed to be is far from spectacular these days. I keep coming back (like a sucker) for more only to be let down time and time again. Fix the problem!!! My iPhone 3G and countless others are basically inoperable. You're loosing supporters and that's not a threat. We are fed up!!! -
Aug 5, 2010 3:38 PM in response to Xplorer77by x1daydreamer6x,Lo and behold, angry iPhone 3G users! Apple has released iOS 4.1 Beta 2 to developers and the report is that is COMPLETELY SOLVES the iPhone 3G lag issues!! Hoooray!! In fact, most report that it's faster and more responsive than ever before
Now we just have to sit by patiently and await for it's public/consumer release.. which, I hope, will happen before I lose it one day and run my 3G over
I'm not sure if i can post links, but just google "iphone ios 4.1" and you'll get plently of info on it... -
Aug 5, 2010 3:43 PM in response to Modelerby XTHEDON,I restored last night. Now my iphone 3G is snappy again. Lost a few features. I hate the location services for each app nagging. And I miss the picture location not being saved. -
Aug 5, 2010 4:07 PM in response to jBengtsonby ramblinrose,YES. I certainly have had the veil of APPLELOVE lifted from my gullible face. I have been lifelong Apple fan, defending the brand in every way, with anyone, including my pocketbook for years. It took 3 trips to the genius bar and 2 calls to applecare to get my 3G swapped for another after I suffocated my phone by upgrading to 4.0.1. I received a replacement 3G os 4.0 which was an improvement, however after a week, this replacement phone is bogging down. YestProxy-Connection: keep-alive

day I unchecked spotlight form all aps, and that seems to help.
I am disappointed that apple engineers and management approved this release for the 3G generation, abandoning us as they work on the latest hardware solutions. -

Aug 5, 2010 5:02 PM in response to Xplorer77by tmi4now,I have had recurring frustrations with my iPhone 3G since upgrading to iOS4. Having owned an iPhone since they were released in 2007, and having had the 3G for a looong time, I am hard pressed to describe the degradation in responsiveness in almost every action and function. It is not user perception, but a harsh reality that my wonderfully effective and enjoyable phone provides frustration with almost every action.
I urge Apple to either allow us to have a retrograde action back to 3.1.3 or equivalent, or fix the new operating system for this device. I regret to say I no longer enjoy the device. I simply tolerate its lags, drags, and sags. This is from a man who has owned multiple Macs continually since 1986, and now has 4 computers, Apple TV, Airports, and Time Capsules in his home. -

iOS 4 Problems on iPhone 3G: Apple Working on Fix?
By Bob Bhatnagar - Published July 31st 2010
Unfortunately for some iPhone 3G users the iOS 4 update did not go very well. Reports have surfaced that the new firmware has problems running on the older hardware. The good news is that Apple is working on iOS 4.1, which will alleviate many of the problems with iPhone 3G compatibility.
In the meantime, upgraders have experienced premature battery drain and excessive heat coming from their devices. Performance has slowed to a crawl for some users as speed issues dominate, with many unable to run simple tasks without a headache.
There is one temporary fix for iPhone 3G iOS 4 issues which involves changing a few settings, but results are mixed. Early testing of iOS 4.1 indicates Apple is indeed working on the problem and the incredible slowdowns have been improved.
Apple previously stated that some features of the new operating system would not be available on older hardware, such as the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. The specs of the newer iPhones are definitely much better than the iPhone 3G, but this doesn't excuse Apple from doing its part to make sure that iOS 4 is fully compatible. After all, Apple refused to even offer the iOS 4 upgrade to original iPhone users. They knew the experience wouldn't be pleasant.
Apple is currently investigating the problems with iOS 4 running on the iPhone 4, as developers test the beta versions of iOS 4.1 No word yet on a release date for the new firmware.
.......Also, "Game Center" won't be available to 3G users... not that I'm griping about that, just an FYI. -
Aug 5, 2010 5:11 PM in response to tmi4nowby x1daydreamer6x,@tmi4now: Fix is coming in iOS 4.1 ....likely will be released next month for consumers. -
Aug 5, 2010 6:09 PM in response to Howardswebby Capt_Canuck,I won't go into the same details already listed on this thread, but I wanted Apple to add one more unhappy 3G customer to their list.
I used to love my iPhone 3G. As a PC guy all my friends were amazed with my purchase and I know I am responsible for friends and clients purchasing an iPhone on my recommendation. I even purchased a MacBook Pro as my next laptop. Now with iOS4 I feel like throwing the 3G out the car window and drive to my electronics store to buy an Android. I'm so extremely disappointed with Apple.
I hope the rumors about 4.1 are true - I need my phone, and mobile life, back!
Apple please listen to us.
