Aug 6, 2010 5:32 PM in response to tmi4nowby 1MacAddict,I felt the need to chime in, just needed to vent.
Been a fan since 1983, converted many people to the Mac platform. Wonderful equipment.
The performance on the iPhone since the upgrade is just terrible. Not only slow, to add insult to injury having apps crash after waiting for them to load.
I'm not in the mood to buy a new iPhone 4 nor am I really in a position to buy one.
I'm just disappointed. -
Aug 6, 2010 5:36 PM in response to Xplorer77by fwonder,After reading many comments on this thread, I'm pleased to know I'm not the only one with this problem. A friend with the iPhone 4 asked me how my upgrade to iOS4 went. I told him it sucked. First it took FOREVER, then my phone is really slow. Opening apps, especially the iPod app takes a long time and crashes a lot. Getting a keyboard to text takes a long time. I've read that this problem is due to the processor on the 3G, but why wasn't this discovered during the development of this OS. My only guess is that Apple doesn't care for its 3G users and just expected everyone to upgrade to the iPhone 4. But after a month of really bad phone experiences, including the loss of my email account for 1 week, I'm not interested in upgrading. I'm beginning to entertain the idea of an Android phone after this experience. I really like my phone, I just wish it worked the way it used to. -

Aug 6, 2010 10:42 PM in response to fwonderby Carol G,I have had all these issues, too after installing iOS4 on my iPhone 3G. First, I wrote Apple. They had me keep a log of the problems for 24 hrs. and email it to them. They said they were gathering data to show the Apple engineers. I hope that iOS 4.1 (now in beta 3) will help us.
In the meantime, these tweaks have just about restored my phone to the pre-iOS4 condition. I reboot the phone several times a week, holding down the on-off switch and home button, until the Apple logo appears.
I deleted about 40 little-used apps off my phone for now.
The biggest helpof all was unchecking all the items in Spotlight search, under settings/ home button. I did that, rebooted and then re-checked just the apps under Spotlight (which is all I used when searching.)
After doing the above steps, the folders and other iOS features in mail, etc., are working perfectly and my phone is now as fast as it used to be.
I hope a software fix is coming to correct everything for us iPhone 3G users. -

I called Apple support and was told there is no way to downgrade (officially), and BECAUSE I JAILBROKE MY PHONE, MY WARRANTEE IS VOID!!!! Very bad service! Apple's software and firmware update BROKE MY PHONE, and they can't or won't fix it, and the only fix VOIDS MY WARRANTEE!!!
Jailbreaking voids one's warranty because it is uncertain. One never knows, if it may break the phone. In contrast, Apple's update to 4.0 is certain to break the phone, so it does not void the warranty. -
Aug 7, 2010 5:25 AM in response to Carol Gby n3nto,No it isnt Carol.
Did all that stuff on both the 3G we have ages ago.
If I get a call it sometimes takes ages to accept the call. If after that I send someone an sms it takes ages to open the messaging, a simple awakening of the phone sometimes just stalls. God forbid that I get a phone call while am doing something with the phone, it will just freeze. Most of the games are too heavy to run properly and some just crash. (although in some cases it may be a problem of the developers)
The usability has gone right down. You may clear the cache and then it will brighten up a little bit but afterwards it will unexpectedly start slowing down. Yes the Spotlight thing helps a little, the clearing of the cache helps, removing apps may help, but one wonders why you bought a smartphone to begin with if you have to turn everything off that made it a smartphone.
IOS4 is just too heavy and no amount of tweaking will correct it. I just hope that its not about tactics and making one upgrade to a new phone...MS windows comes to mind, they were good at that -
Aug 7, 2010 7:53 AM in response to Xplorer77by obauere,i have noticed the same problem and so has my girlfriend, i was wondering how i should go about going back to 3.1.3 because ios 4.0 is just too leggy for us -
Aug 7, 2010 8:20 AM in response to Xplorer77by pca516,Have the same issues I have tried everything and still nothing, I feel there just trying to make us buy there new product (i4) in this way there making bucko dollars. -

Apple will not be supporting the 3G on iOS4 upgrades. Outrageous. -
Aug 7, 2010 9:51 AM in response to pca516by Rob A.,My wife recently got an Android X - she was going to get an iPhone 4 until she saw all the problems I had with my iPhone 4 (which I returned). I went back to my iPhone 3G and am trying to live with the OS4 update (very difficult as performance is horrible now). The only phone I have not tried yet (as in purchased) is the EVO 4G (Sprint).
Apple apparently have a fix in the works for 3G OS4 folks, but once again keep us all in the dark about when it will be available. In the mean time I'm looking into EVO 4G (today).
My notes on the phones I've had:
Android X
1. Fast, very fast, much faster than iPhone 4
2. Nice large display, thin.
3. User interface is more worky than the iPhone 4
iPhone 4
1. Faster than my 3G but slower than all the other top end phones
2. Drops calls frequently (even with the cover)
3. Internet/surfing is hit or miss, very inconsistent performance
4. Too small in my hands, I feel like Will Ferrel SNL sketch with a micro phone.
EVO 4G
1. VERY limited 4G coverage in California (nothing in the SF/Bay Area)
2. Nice display
3. Sized well
4. Appears to be fast (used co-workers)
5. Interface/OS, yet to be determined, will know more today
It's unfortunate that Apple burnt their bridges with me, I was looking forward to my 3G to iPhone 4 upgrade. I'll continue buying Apple computers/products, but I'll pass on any Apple mobile devices (iPad and iPhone) as this experience has left a VERY bad taste in my mouth.

Aug 7, 2010 9:53 AM in response to In My Kitchenby Christopher John Hunter, not to worry, lots of people have 3Gs & contracts still running, Apple'll see it right - how long's it been, feels like over a month, but we have every reason to have confidence, and the troubles have been an illusion, hardly reality ... -
Aug 7, 2010 10:02 AM in response to Christopher John Hunterby Rob A.,Hahaha, I assume you are being sarcastic
Now that 3G owners are officially dropped from OS4 Beta 3 the bridge is officially burnt. I suppose in some way this is good news for all the existing 3G owners ... no real hope or need to stay on the iPhone path now. -
Aug 7, 2010 10:23 AM in response to Rob A.by Christopher John Hunter,'afraid I was ... but still think this is fixable, can't see why is couldn't be - 'not as though we're expecting miracles, and we would be happy with a downgrade back to 3.1.3, which is where we'd be now if we hadn't been misled ... of course, our apps have been updating in the meantime, but that shouldn't be a problem since the update downloads would have been openly to 3G 'phones ! -
Aug 7, 2010 11:11 AM in response to Xplorer77by lodogespa,I'm tired of waiting for the iPhone to react. iOS 4 on 3G is the worst update that has ever been out there, though the new functions are nice.
Hoping for *iOS 4.1* changing this horrible situation! Very soon!!!
