Aug 7, 2010 11:18 AM in response to lodogespaby nirelandguy,4.1 is in beta 3 stage so it should be out very soon, although I believe the PDF security issue might hold it up now. -
Aug 7, 2010 11:25 AM in response to Xplorer77by mickylong,Have to add my comments to this thread and why I am SERIOUSLY considering switching both my wife and my iPHONE for a Droid or other non-Apple product. Having the same problem discussed here after upgrading (BTW, if I remember, there was no warning about slow or erratic functionality when iTunes found the upgrade). I went to the local Apple store to see if they could help. Their answer: upgrade to an iPhone 4 as according to the rep I talked to there is no way to go back to the older OS. Obviously not happy with the answer but after considering for a few minutes I said OK.
I then waited 25 minutes to get someone to help me in the Apple store after telling them I would upgrade the phones and after waiting that long, I left. Tried to go to AT&T. No phones -- two week backorder.
iPhone may be great but Apple's not keeping up with the standards of support they used to have in my opinion.
Isolated case maybe, but there are other phone options out there. Maybe it's time to try one. -
Aug 7, 2010 11:45 AM in response to Xplorer77by gtoribio,Pssst.... Apple,
I believe you have a memory management issue here. I watch the free memory go down to 5 MB and less, and that is when the app (whichever is active at that time) stands frozen. -
Aug 7, 2010 12:07 PM in response to gtoribioby Christopher John Hunter,we keep an eye on memory use, too, via the Memory Sweep app, but have to say the correlation doesn't seem strong ... -
Aug 7, 2010 12:14 PM in response to mickylongby Christopher John Hunter, interesting - how are the apps on the other platforms, and how's Apple support compare, too ??
we had three Nokias, one smart, a Motorola & a Samsung, both smart-ish, before, and 'have to say Apple have some way to fall to be as bad as they were, in basic functionality, in user-interface, in update strategy, in apps ...
they might have improved, in the meantime, of course, but we've not heard it said ...

Aug 7, 2010 1:04 PM in response to Christopher John Hunterby n3nto,I use a 3G but I have people around me that have the new Samsung S and HTCs (with android) and believe me when I say that they run as smooth as the iphones, in many ways are more intelligent phones and totally configurable.
Iphones had a big lead three years ago but not now.
There is also Nokia with the new Symbian/Meego OS, dont underestimate them.
I think your not keeping up with whats happening out there. Much more choice and no clear winner. -
Aug 7, 2010 1:08 PM in response to Christopher John Hunterby n3nto,Forgot to say....all this progress thanks to Apple. They made something that was really advanced in its time. it does not excuse sloppiness though. -

I use the FreeMemory app which shows and clears unused memory on launch. I can start out showing 7 megs at first then the app can clear up to 45 megs! Something is holding on to memory. -
Aug 7, 2010 2:07 PM in response to cliffby Christopher John Hunter, yep, agree, only we don't find slowness correlates with reducing free memory - free memory can vary between under 2MB & over 30MB, and we couldn't say which was fastest ! All very ad-hoc & unscientific, of course, so just impressions ... -

Aug 29, 2010 7:48 AM in response to Xplorer77by superded,Wow, what a dissapointment...
iTunes kept asking me to upgrade and I finally did it to the disastrous results that most people have had with IOS4 on the iPhone 3G.
This, in my opinion, was done on purpose to somehow force us to switch to the iPhone 4. The lack of response from Apple and the lack of support from the staff at Apple stores is proof of that. There are so many of us with this problem and so much more to come (late updaters) that the grip of death gate will look small in comparison. It is not normal tha a piece of hardware like the iPhone should become obsolete so quickly. One day it works fine and the other (after the upgrade) it doesn't. We're not talking about loss of performance here. We're talking about no performance at all.
How the **** are we supposed to accept getting into expensive contracts, pay a lot for a piece of hardware that ends up being a very expensive paperweight?
I really hope someone from Apple will start telling us frankly that a solution is coming with an eta. I am a good Apple customer and ambassador but now I am utterly disappointed and I feel like I cheated all the people I convinced to switch to Apple products.
Sad, sad day for me to come to this conclusion.
Mr. Jobs shake things up! Please!

Aug 8, 2010 3:32 AM in response to leoncooperjrby jen1977ni,Has anyone else had issues with the lifehacker method shown on this website? http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2010/06/how-to-downgrade-from-ios-4-to-iphone-3-1-3 /
I download both the 3.1.3 folder and the recboot and both are on my desktop, I then extract the files and when it comes to clicking 'restore' in itunes and I've then to browse to the restore file, I do so, but the folders I have on my desktop, when opened, appear empty?! I am really stuck and sooo desperate to get back to 3.1.3 before I smash my 3G up with a hammer whilst laughing hysterically!!! -
Aug 8, 2010 3:34 AM in response to superdedby jen1977ni,I agree with EVERYTHING you've said, APPLE NEED TO DO SOMETHING, AND FAST! This has gone on long enough!!! -
Aug 8, 2010 4:24 AM in response to jen1977niby n3nto,I think the problem is that it will be difficult for them to make some kind of IOS4 light as this would probably divert too many resources from their new lineup of products, and as someone here said they will not provide a downgrade to version 3 because that would be admitting a problem with IOS4. I am also not sure that the new apps refined for the IOS4 would run on version 3-
I think its a NO win or near impossible situation for Apple but worse for us 3G owners that have to live with this laggy phone.
lets hope... -
Aug 8, 2010 5:15 AM in response to Xplorer77by Karnickel,It was a joy to use my iPhone 3g with iOS 3 - since I have installed iOS 4 my iPhone has become terribly frustrating to use. It is extremely slow and sometimes it is even impossible to answer a phone call because of the frozen screen.
And it is even more frustrating to see that Apple is obviously neglecting their customers. It seems to me that Apple is now only paying attention to sell the iPhone 4 to new customers and don't really care for existing customers.
If Apple don't offer a solution for this issue soon, I will NEVER EVER buy Apple products again.
One year ago, i have spent a lot of money on the the iPhone 3g and an expensive iPhone plan (24 months minimum term). And now - after one year - I can not use my phone properly any more, because Apple is incapable to support existing products and customers. That's crazy. Apple - face your responsibility!!!
