Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

"I think the problem is that it will be difficult for them to make some kind of IOS4 light as this would probably divert too many resources from their new lineup of products, and as someone here said they will not provide a downgrade to version 3 because that would be admitting a problem with IOS4."

This is indeed Apples problem and one which they really cannot ignore any more. I understand where you are coming from, but do Apple understand us. To be blunt, 3G owners with the software issue really don't give a dam if a downgrade causes Apple problems. If Apple caused 3G owners a problem, then I for one will be pleased to hear if it's a headache for Apple. Good I say, then they will know how we feel every day with this dam software. Apple have, in a way, admitted there is a problem. Too many customers have approached Apple with complaints for Apple to respond with third party downgrades. But most us don't want a third party downgrade, we want an official downgrade option direct from Apple. That would atleast amend the issues and put smilling faces back onto customers faces. Unless Apple are so advanced they don't even know how to post up a downgrade link to official software. Come on, how hard can it be.

When will Apple realise that with each passing day, we (the customer) are getting more and more fed up with their ways and the lack of help from such a large established company.

Well it looks like Apple fired the head of iPhone 4 - Mark Papermaster. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/08/technology/08apple.html?_r=2

Now who is gonna get the AXE for OS4 problems?

Unfortunately it doesn't resolve existing 3G owners, but it does provide hope that this iPhone 4 and OS4 mess does NOT happen again. Steve Jobs appears to have taken this problem to heart ... perhaps too late, it will depend on how quickly Apple can recover from this.

seems a bit harsh, if he was indeed fired for that - the antenna issue seemed to have been way over-blown, as if the press had at-last found something to have a dig at ... and we regularly hold our 3Gs in ways calculated to enhance signal of difficult areas !

plus he seemed to be head of hardware & our problems seem to be with the software ...

I like this bit in that NYT article "Reached on his cellphone". Wonder if it was a iPhone 4 and if he lost signal

My iPhone 3G took an immediate dive after the recommended upgrade to iOS4. Freezing apps, calls and a list of other frustrations. I contacted the Apple care team and they recommended I take it in to the store and made me an appointment. The phone support was very friendly and helpful giving me hope that they would atleast replace with a like model that would run better. I got to the store and they basically gave me the shrug shoulders saying there is nothing they can do. One course of action was for me to upgrade my 3G phone to a 3GS or iPhone 4. I stated that the phone works fine but the OS needs to be fixed. I was given no hope on a interim or long term solution to this problem.

I have read a handful of these posts and have to say I agree with these points that have been raised:

    1. Despite having a 3G, I felt "marketed to" with the iOS4.
    2. I upgraded expecting "goodness" from Apple.
    3. Now my phone is so painful to use now. Nearly every task is associated with minutes of waiting. And most apps seem to fail to load the first 5-6 attempts. Even apple apps like the player. Imagine that!

I don't expect Apple to support ancient technology. But they sold this phone to me only one year ago. I think its reasonable to expect my phone to work with new updates for a couple of years - let alone one. Or, they better give me one heck of a good trade-in.

Come on Apple... you can do better. Please help us. For me, the absolute best feature in iOS4 is the folders. I can't understand how I lived without it. However, i'm willing to even give that up to go back to 3x so I can have a usable phone again.

I'm in the same boat as everyone else.

My 3G is a ballhair away from being unusable. Jerkiness, lag and freezing everywhere.

Takes me around 3 or 4 attempts to open the mail app without it crashing, then about another full minute before I even get to read an email.

The media player controls are literally unusable as (when it's not crashing or hanging like everything else) they take at least 5-10 seconds to respond to any input and I end up chasing my tail with the play/pause button and volume slider.

The best bit is that I can't even answer the *ucking *astard thing when it rings because it goes to answerphone before the screen responds to my finger.

Gawd, I was syncing in iTunes and the screen had a pop up saying do you want to update to 4.0... Something. I thought you had to pay for it so I wanted to see what would happen (I'm one of those who needs "idiot guide to anything technological" I thought well the worse that can happen is...1. Free update (I normally hold to "nothing is for free") or 2. When I tap accept, it would take me to the apple store and try to sell me the update. I clicked then a friend later told me this am, hey didn't you read the reviews. DUH! I didn't, like a naivete, I signed up for something without checking it out!
So a mite too late, I checked. Ok, the worse that can happen is??? I've been told to buy the iPhone 4 itself but hey why buy a new something when the old something works? Hey logically, like windows, aren't we supposed to just upgrade software as it becomes better, but keep the old hardware? For example, like an 2006 PC and upgrading the software- MS windows 6 to 7, then 7 into 8 and so on???? I lost count!!!! I just, Duh, click when "upgrade available, do you want to upgrade now?". My freaking PC was purchased back in 2004 and hey I'm up to date with current software AND BABY, LEMME TELL Y'ALL, NO PROBS SO FAR.
So, explain, why isn't the iPhone reacting the same way as any old PC upgrading with current software? First of all,, should I wait it out and hope for the best, or secondly----- should I backtrack and change back to .... I believe that I had the 3.1.2 (like I said before, I'm technological impared), if so, how the heck am I supposed to do that? Lol? Is there a button somewhere that you push when you find a fictional pop up saying something like, "dissatisfied? Want to degrade?".......?!?!? Grin what am I supposed to do now? Keep my fingers crossed?

Enough is enough ... Went and bought Win 7 + Acer laptop and looking at number of different smart phones (as an interim solution picked up a Motorola Razor)
I have been an Apple fan boy since PowerBook 100 & Classic. Apple's OS used to be a pleasure to use, but hardware was a hit and miss. Now that software has gone to dogs coupled with a "head in a sand" corporate practice there is no reason to stick with Apple.

    Goodbye Apple

I think it's unethical. I am extremely disappointed that this problem is not being admitted to and a solution being sought frankly and publicly.

This post will probably be deleted, as I am seem to be targeted for linking to a well-known site that offers a 'solution' (and perhaps because of criticising some regulars for their high-handed attitude to those desperate posters hoping to fix their now almost useless phones).

I use my iPhone 3G almost as my main way of accessing online content & interacting with others.

I followed some of the earlier device and cleared my settings, this provided a temporary reprieve before the ever-present lag and crashes returned.

Anything which uses the onscreen keyboard (replying on websites, twitter apps etc) seems to crash whilst using it. I turned off Auto correction, auto capitalisation and other stuff whch may be using up resources whilst typing and did notice a reduction in the amount of crashes I was experiencing.

Its still lags like a mutha, to the point of being unusable.

Lets be clear, no one expects neverending support from Apple, but whilst they were happy to gain sales from people on 2 year contracts they have a duty to support those customers during that period.

Once the last iPhone 3G has left the shelves and its contract has expired it should be considered a legacy device.

Apple have proved with the iPhone4 they have room to improve when it comes to hardware, and they've proved with practically pushing iOS4 to iPhone 3G owners (with no warnings of reduced performance) they leave a lot to be desired when it comes to software.

These problems have enabled me to clear my head of the hype cloud and I don't think I'd be buying another Apple device. The most disappointing thing is Apple's lack of response, if they said they were cutting some features in 4.10 for 3G users to enhance performance we'd know they were working on it, but as it stands they're completely ignoring the millions of 3G owners... And I'm not going to be handing over money quite so willingly in future to a company that ignores me. I'll leave that to the people who think Apple can do no wrong.

Very frustrating. Both me and my wife have 3G models and we both upgraded to iOS4. We had no problem with the process but since the upgrade our phones are just slow and really want to bin them.

It feels like using a Windows computer, frustrating, slow, freezing. Even if I could get over these I have the biggest problem with calls. Receiving and making calls is **** too. O2 told me to restart the phone, reset networks and finally to make my phone work they suggested I reinstall my whole iTunes. Crazy!!!

I have at least a month before I can upgrade to the iPhone 4 but I feel cheated. I am on my contract which I pay every month and basically the phone is not working as it should. I really hope Apple will have a fix for this fast because I will not upgrade as a principal. I am not going to be pushed to buy a new product while the one I already own is not working. I really hope that Apple is not playing for this.

Good luck to all of us!

my last 2 uploads since the new 4G my Iphone has rendered my phone worse than uselsess, i just want to throw it against the nearest wall. My battery life has been reduced from over a day to a few short hours. 50% does not work, and I know I am not the only one
went in to the Georgtown shop last week to get it sorted, only to be told there are so many poeple with the same problem and nothing can be done,he did reset the phone and it did improve the speed lightly but did nothing to help the glitches.
I bought this phone over a year ago it worked fine and now it is now useless and it is Apples fault. they acknowlege my complaint so why can I not get a new phone that works. Aparently they are working on it, this is not helping me at the moment with my work, I am self emplyed and I am losing cusotmers all because of apple. Do we sue, it is a new territory if you purchase something and it breaks you get your money back if the company that sold you the phone causes the break then sureley the same rules apply.
