Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

After updating iPhone 3G to ios4.0.1: apps crash, battery life is shortened, typing is delayed, Internet connections are painfully slow, iPhone gets hot, lost visual voicemail for a week, AT&T said my best option is to buy a 3GS because the 3G is just not compatable with new ios4. Apple needs to provide free fix for these issues - I've paid enough for this phone, which until upgrading to 4.0 (which in itself was a slow and painful process and 4.0.1 did nothing to remedy any of the issues) was a fine phone and my affection and enthusiasm for Apple was intact, but now, frustration prevails.

    Here's a note I sent to sjobs@mac.com:

    Hi Steve.

I've been a long time and happy user of Apple products. The iPhone had become a centerpiece of my life. With my software upgrade to OS4, the satisfaction with my iPhone has gone down the tubes. The phone has become unusable. It takes several seconds, if I am lucky, to do many builtin activities. Beyond that, the device will often hang, and apps will often dump, including most of the builtin apps like mail, text messaging and safari. This is basically ridiculous.

The discussion forums are flaming about this issue. Check out a thread on discussions.apple.com:

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2475859&tstart=0

This is just one of the threads on this issue with over 64 pages of comments, and 200,000 views.

There's a YouTube video capturing the performance all of us are seeing better than I could ever describe myself:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pdk2cJpSXLg

It's a parody ad, but it pretty accurately reflects our experience.

Please tell us these issues are being addressed. If OS4 was never designed to run well on iPhone 3G, then the upgrade should have been disallowed.

*This is nothing to do with anything on this thread - just pondering some ideas about life…*

If I broke someone's phone by accident, I would immediately say sorry and offer to replace it.

If I secretly broke 4 million people's phones on purpose in the hope that they would buy a new one from me, and those 4 million people found out, I would stay silent and admit nothing.
Not that that has any relevance in this case.

Is it 4 million iPhones that are in circulation today?
Not that that has any relevance in this case either.

Does anyone know if Apple has made on any comments lately?
And yes, that has no bearing on anything.

Yes, let's stay 'on topic' - does anyone know any more Hail Mary placebo temporary fixes for our crippled iPhones? I hear if you get a snappy jack russell to lick the touch screen before 11.45am most mornings, you can see a significant improvement in the phones performance for up to 8 minutes before having to do it again.

I.T. specialist Colin Gimply from Hull UK sears by this fix, but he's been doing it since before the iso4 upgrade and he sleeps with a roll of fluffy pink carpet called Gemma.

I am deeply discouraged after my last IPhone update. What once was a truly enjoyable phone has now become something of a bother to even use. My phone use to be so fast, so smooth, now it is a toaster...slow and frustrating, producing burnt toast daily.

I'll give Apple a little longer to fix this - If they don't, I'm moving on to a different company. The reason, because If they don't fix it, that tells me that this latest update was done deliberately to disable and slow down the older models, by a greedy corporation wanting to increase the sales of their newest model.

My daughter has two Jack Russells, maybe I'll try having both of them do this and see if I can get 16 minutes of hassle free use out of this brick.

I posted earlier the issues I had with the upgrade to iOS4. Saturday I called my business rep at the Apple Store in Knoxville. He told me to make an appointment with the genius bar, which I completed today. GREAT EXPERIENCE that once again made me glad that I am an Apple owner. They did a no hassle swap-out for a new 3G phone even though I was way out of warranty, and it had 3.1.3 on it (hooray! hooray!). As my business rep said, they wanted me to be satisfied. I am a very satisfied customer.

Significantly slower after "upgrade". Nearly unusable.

    1) Reception bars have decreased (?).
    2) Texting has slowed down to a crawl. When I press a letter, it gets bigger and freezes, then a few seconds later it shrinks back and the letter appears on my message.
    3) Screens freeze for 5-10 seconds at a time.

Saw a parody of this on youtube; it was supposed to be funny, but given that it looks just like what I'm experiencing, it's not.

I'm almost at the "I'll never buy one of THESE again" point of frustration. Been relatively happy with it up until now though...can't understand why Apple hasn't addressed the issue. I'll be patient for a couple more weeks, but this is my office; I rely on this at work and home. At some point I'm buying a new phone, and if I'm buying a new phone because my iPhone 3G is too slow to use, I definitely won't be buying an iPhone 4...

    Think about it Apple...

That is a good point, but if Apple did this deliberately I still don't see what they expect 3G / 3GS users who are still tied into contracts to do about upgrading right now.

There would be nothing to gain other than badly soiling their own image, especially since with the Android market blossoming. iOS 4 was rushed, just like the hardware it was developed for. Apple made a mistake, which they don't want to admit for some reason. They need to get it fixed though, seriously.

I think this is probably unusual.

I doubt Apple would be willing to exchange, for free, the millions of crippled 3G, IOS4 running iphones out there, but glad to hear your ok now.

I think Apple need a good kick in the backside. I've had my iphone 3g for over a year now and it has been brilliant until iOS4. Everthing worked flawlessly.

    1. If the phone is locked 4 times out of 10 it will not respond. The thing that you slide then sometimes doesnt even know your sliding it. Putting the password in is a complete fail. It can take 5-10 seconds for a letter to appear.

This means that if i need to unlock my phone it can take me 30-40 seconds. In my opinion that is NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

    2. Messaging has become terrible. If i press the messages app it takes 6-7 seconds just to display my messages. Then a further 10 seconds to even attempt to type a message out.

    3. The calendar has slowed right down. To switch months i have to press the arrows several times for it to recognise that ive been pushing it.

    4. The camera takes an age to load up and take pictures. I wanted that shot 10 seconds ago. Not now.

    5. Contacts isnt instant. Still takes several seconds.

There are many more problems that EVERYONE is aware of. I have another 10 months on my contract left (Im on a 24 month contract). I spoke to O2 and to actually get out of my contract it will cost me £350+ and then if i wanted an Iphone 4 a further £370 to take the phone out. This phone is suppose to be getting better and better and better. Unfortunately not. For me with every update it is getting progressively worse.

I even decided i would downgrade to 3.1.3 and when i did none of the apps worked because they are only releasing apps for IOS4 now.

This is my 2nd post on this forum. My first post was about an ipad which i ended up getting banned for a few days off the forums. If i could speak my mind now i would be banned even longer.

Get it sorted Apple. We are giving you alot of ***** money!

I actually started to hate my phone now as well. I'm constantly getting stressed about it when I want to do something simple like open a website and the phone just freezes for 10 seconds or so before continuing to load.
Writing a message is rediculous too. I can write a whole sentance before it actually appears on the screen.
I have to plug my phone in twice a day as well, it no longer lasts for a whole day. I just cant cope with it any more :-@

Why would you bother downgrading when all the apps that are coming out are for ios4? I downgraded to 3.1.3 and came across this very problem. Had to upgrade and now im struggling with a slow phone.

With NO way to reload the previous OS..... WHY, WHY, WHY???? I now HATE my iPhone - good job idiots!! 3 iMacs, a Mac mini, 3 iPhones... starting to re-think my 23 years of Mac history... reminds me of the 4 years I went to PC, when you quit supporting anything prior to Power PC macs.... same crappy feeling that I have today.... you guys are turning into Sony.... NOT a good thing!?!?!?

2 hard resets seems to help for half a day, but thats it.

my iPhone feels like a Blackberry with the slow performance.
