Q: Iphone 3G slow after update to IOS4

The upgrade to IOS4 took forever but eventualy was completed succesfully.
But the iphone is very slow with IOS4. It doesn't work as smooth as it used to be. Also new applications such as the iBook application are very slow, doesn't respond smooth on screentaps etc. Who has the same experience?
I'm thinking about going back to version 3.1.3 because IOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G.

I hope Apple will listen to their iphone users and will release an update soon for iOS4 which improves the performance on older iPhones.

I have a macbook and have had macs my whole life. That is now over. I am also a stockholder. Way to screw everyone who loves you. Im out.

we found double hard reboots (hold Power & Home buttons down, and when it's done, do it again, contiguously) gave short term relief, and that the Spotlight fix (deselect all options, Power down, Power up, reselect all options) works for much longer - two to five days, it varies ! Relief, not a cure, but it's generally bearable / workable, we find (today was a good day) ...

As we understand it, not every 3g iPhone is affected - ie: many do not have a problem, and many do have a problem ... go figure ! Given that, it must be quite possible for Apple's testing to have shown no problem ...

Every now & then, even the best organisations get issues which are difficult & surprisingly time-consuming to get to the bottom of ... either way, we have no doubt Apple are working on it, and no doubt they'll find a fix ...

Which is not to say we don't have our fingers crossed, or that we don't kick the wall every now & then !

I did the double hard reset and that seemed to help some. It's a lot better than what it was.

    Christopher:

Firstly I do not believe that there are 3G users without problems, secondly I did not pay for a bearable phone and thirdly I suspect everyone knows why this is happening, IOS4 Is just to intensive for the Iphone 3G RAM and processor.

I have sort of accepted that Apple will not provide us with new firmware so I have asked Vodafone to update me to an android phone instead of the Iphone 4. Either way I will have to wait for a few weeks as all the android phones are out of stock. It will give me time to think about it
Sort of fed up with all of this.

Took me 4 separate occasions and 7 hours straight on the last try to install the iOS4 on my 3G. Now my 3G is pretty much worthless. Just wanted to throw my voice out there.

You pretty much sum up the way I have been feeling. Apple's service is usually top notch. Not with this issue. May be time to move on.

My wife moved to Droid X (Verizon). I'm in the process of moving to EVO 4G (Sprint). In both cases there is about 1-2 week delay as everyone is sold out of either phone ... but if you want an iPhone 4 there is no delay in getting those (I guess sales have dropped drastically for iPhone 4).

However, I'm not giving up on Apple's desktop and laptops, I plan to continue with those. iPad and iPhone products I will avoid -- but in 2 years (after my Sprint contract is up) I might re-visit Apple's mobile devices again (assuming Apple are still in the mobile device market).

It's unfortunate blemish on Apple, and I have a hard time believing Steve Jobs was "unaware" of any of 3G OS4 and iPhone 4 issues. It was a VERY bad decision as this will leave scars in many for several years.

Well said. I agree with everything.

I still have and use my Imac/macbook pro. They are still a pleasure to use and I have nothing against Apple per se.

I have against what looks like a new Ethos for Apple where everything is about squeezing the last buck out of everyone whist trampling over the previous customers.

The 3G debacle has made me look elsewhere. I dont think I am alone either.

I just want to weigh in that I too have been a huge Apple fan, but these slowness problems with the 3G on ios4 are unacceptable.

I get that multitasking is turned off because the 3g is not fast enough. So, then, why is the performance not comparable to when running ios3?

Perhaps the best example of the slowness is using the Map application. When you click on something there is always a noticeable delay of a few seconds, sometimes more than 10 seconds, before it responds. It's unbearable.

And yes, I've tried the double hard reboots and clearing cache etc. It helps some, but not all that much, nor for very long.

77% of iPhone 4 sales were from existing customer base (upgrades), this is actually NOT good news for Apple. See this article: http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2010/06/25/77-of-iphone-4-sales-were-upgrades/

I'm surprised this thread has not been deleted yet, perhaps when a thread gets so large Apple fear deleting it as it might cause a huge flux of additional complaints (seen this happen before where it brought down Apple's servers).

But clearly, the number of complaints here has forced Apple to rethink their OS4 4.1 support for 3G ... at first it was NO support for 3G, now a sudden new Beta 3 build WITH support for 3G ... so folks, being vocal might actually help.

At this point, whether or not Apple come out with a fix for 3G is too little too late -- it's the business practice of forced leverage from various problems Apple were very aware of. Microsoft tried the forced leverage approach which has ultimately allowed Apple to grow and surpass Microsoft financially, but it appears Apple are now using the same philosophy that Microsoft use ... leverage.

Some day, big business might come to the realization that "leverage" never works with consumers -- it's a false goal, a fantasy many a CEO's fall into. The bottom line with always be quality and value -- leverage NEVER plays a roll in a companies success, but it has failed many companies that try to use leverage.

I just wanted to throw my voice out there as another who is having problems with his iPhone 3G after upgrading to iOS 4. In fact my wife's 3G began showing symptoms before mine but now they are both very unstable. They tend to just hang a lot and are generally unresponsive. At first iOS 4 was very snappy I thought but the performance seems to be degrading over time.

Listening to streaming music apps in particular has become nearly impossible. The music will stutter after a few minutes and then either lock up the phone completely or crash back to the spring board.

For anyone wondering if this process works, the answer is "YES". If you follow the fairly simple directions step by step your unusable iPhone 3g with iOS4 will be downgraded to 3.1.3 and be usable again. You may lose some information that is stored in apps but most of your contact information, playlists, etc can be restored with a MobileMe sync or an iTunes sync. Try it, you'll like it.

I see you just released 4.0.2 to close that pesky PDF hole that actually allows us to fix our phones.

Way to prioritize. Now even if you fix this issue, im completely out anyway. Could not possible feel more unimportant to you.

UNUSABLY slow after 4.0. Its ridiculous. I want to crush it under my cars wheels! I hear clicking when typing and the letters dont show up for a minute...all applications crash...keys get stuck...minutes go by after clicking a button...blank screens for minutes...I can't have a phone that doesn't work.

If this is apple's way of getting people to upgrade to another phone, forget it! My phone worked just fine under 3.0, THEY f*ked it up with 4.0. THEY need to fix it. Or I'll get a phone that works, like an android.

Anyone knows if the 4.0.2 also fixes the "3ggate"?
