maybe this has been said already -- i was having this problem for my school's exchange email server, and gmail. after hours of zero change, i decided to make the email accounts using the "Other" option (as opposed to the predefined MS Exchange//Gmail options). after i put the info in manually everything started to work. i think there's some error in the predefined email accounts.

but then is it not a true Exchange connection? Does it turn out to be an IMAP only account?

This link is from 2008, but may work for some of you:

    http://www.rassoc.com/gregr/weblog/2008/07/18/iphone-and-exchange-push-and-dns/

You have to manually change the DNS servers in the WiFi connection. Unfortunately, I use a split-DNS architecture at work, and this solution does not apply to me.

I read another support article related to iOS4 and DNS records (I'll have to locate the link again).

Apparently iOS4 does not like CNAME records - which is exactly how my internal DNS was configured. I simply removed the CNAME record for mail.company.com, and re-added an A Record for the mail server. All e-mail/calendars/contacts are syncing across all iPhone devices.

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately it's not foolproof, as 1. I've already tried that. and 2. I'm connecting to the Exchange server using it's IP address, not hostname, and I still get the errors.

Same issue as all - what resolved at least for us on a 3gs and iphone4 (both ios4):

Stripped ".local" from domain in iphone exchange settings. just used "internaldomain" not "internaldomain.local".. might work for others using YOURadDOMAIN not YOURadDOMAIN.something... seems like IOS4 isn't passing the auth details through properly.

corrected the exchange 2007 - svr conf > hub transport > client recv connector > FQDN

I think this may be a BIGGER part of our issue - I noticed that every time you try some new setting... it only worked if you DELETE the exchange account from the phone. Changing the settings DOES NOT WORK properly.

    hopefully this helps someone else!

Hi all, hope this will help and give ideas about how to solve this issue

I am a freelance IT support and I have access to different Windows Small Business Server 2003 & 2008. I have the same problem on different machine with different iphone, it appears mainly after os4 iphone upgrade. I found the following program accessmylan and did some tests https://store.accessmylan.com/main/promo-testtool?utmcampaign=astest&utm_source=accessmylan.com&utmmedium=ActiveSyncTester-1.1.0.0

Accessmylan was able to give me the following ACTIVESYNC information available on the different servers VERSION/PROTOCOLS. I would emphasize the fact that all our SBS 2003 & 2008 servers are up to date, but they have different age and different version of SBS. Herewith a list of what I found
    1- OLD SBS 2003: version 2,0,3274,0 protocols 1,0 2,0
    2- SBS 2003: version 3,0,4215,0 protocols 1,0 2,0 2,1
    3- SBS 2003 R2: version 6,5,7638,1 protocols 1,0 2,0 2,1 2,5
    4- SBS 2008: version 8,1 protocols 1,0 2,0 2,1 2,5 12,0 12,1

iphone os4 Exchange connector works fine with the installed platforms number 3 & 4. I do have big problems with the two first version. Actually I had problem with an iphone os3 and the installed platforms number 1 height months ago, and as I could not manage it I left it like this saying to the client that it was a problem with his installation that we handed over from a previous IT support.

I will look forward now to see if I can upgrade the ACTYIVESYNC part of SBS for older machine.

    Best

    YEAH
    it paids searching a bit.
Exchange server 2003 require SP2, then the activesync feature upgrade to version 6,5,7638,1 protocols 1,0 2,0 2,1 2,5
    Then email accounts are accessible
Best to all, it works for me

This appears to be a naming convention thing for me. I have a sherweb hosted exchange domain and have several email accounts for different purposes. They all connect OK except for the address admin@mydomain.com.

Anyone know of a way round this? I don't want to cease using this address.

    Cheers

Adding :443 to the end of server name worked for me.

nothing suggested here works at all... iPhone 3G works fine while iPhone 4 can't 'verify account info'

can't use it until this is sorted out

Yes, this caused me hours of fun... I also tried everything. In the end THIS WORKED FOR ME:

SERVER: I used the IP address of the Exchange Server!! I looked it up using one of the online DNS checkers, entering mail.mydomain.com.au ...

So all I had to do was start a new EXCHANGE account, enter email address (me@mydomain.com), Server (xxxx.xxxx.xxxx.xxxx), left domain open, username was just the usual user name as used at work (without any domain or other tricky slash/backslash info - user), password (#####).

I really hope thjis works for others, please let me know with a comment/reply!

OKjust followed your instructions and still no luck for me.

Created a new used with Exchange mail box.

    User : test
    Password : test

Added the account on my iPhone simply with email address, user name, password, then when it gives me the option the ip address of the server.

Verifies the account OK as always however when I try to check mail still get the "Cannot Get Mail The connection to the server failed" error message.

    ?????

The "Cannot Get Mail The connection to the server failed" error message is a different error than the one I had, so may just need to Google for that specific error. I trust other people sync with that exchange server OK, and if not run a diagnostic in the MS exchange server to ensure it is all set up correctly. I used the AS Tester app on the iPhone to check it. Good luck!

What is this AS tester app. I searched for AS Tester however there were no search results in the app store.
