iPhone 3G keeps turning itself off after 4.0 upgrade

Hi there,

my iphone keeps turning itself off (keeps rebooting) after i have upgraded to os 4. It doesn't do it straight away, just at some random point after it's last reboot, usually when I want to use it.

any ideas

Thanks

i have just tried erasing all phone data (from the phone) and setup as new phone in itunes,
Its still behaving very oddly. Hasn't crashed yet, but the "slide to power off" screen keeps on spontaneously appearing.

Also , now keeps locking itself after about 3 seconds.

Think they may have something wrong with the top button sensing -or- my iphone has mysteriously been damaged, it was working perfectly on the previous os, now it is unusable.

i'm having the same exact problem. actually, ive had a few while updating my iphone 3gs.
at first, it was backing up, but stopped when it was about 80% done, and it stayed like that for a few hours. it then seemingly completed the backup, and went on to restore the iphone and whatnot, but i then kept getting 'unkown error 29' and couldnt resolve the issue. i tried the process on a macbook pro & a pc, but nothing happened. it was only after i watched a video on youtube that i was able to resolve the issue.
next, when i was trying to get all my contacts, photos/vids, notes, apps, music, etc. back on, the last backup was from back in november of 2009.
THEN, itunes showed my number as 911. thinking that was an error, i checked 'my number' on my iphone, and it said 911 as well. when i tried calling my actual number, my phone rang, and when i called from my phone, my actual number showed up on called ID. weird, isn't it?
to make matters worse, after a few minutes of use, the iphone decides to reboot itself.

im disappointed in the iOS4, i had higher expectations, hopefully apple will release an update VERY soon to resolve all the issues. (i really only care about the restarting, the contacts and music and everything i can fix myself)

Seems very wierd. The lock button at the top of the phone now no longer functions.

AppleCare say they have received a few calls about OS4 instability on older phones.......
I need to take it 30 miles to my nearest apple store or pay them because it's out of warranty.
brilliant, a phone that was working perfectly on 3.1.3 two days ago is now pretty much 'bricked' on the new os.

going to try the downgrade back to 3.1.3

Then perhaps a call to trading standards might be in order.

have followed instructions here
http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/downgradeiphone_os_40_beta_back_iphone_os313
to downgrade to 3.1.3,

had to download libusb from here http://www.ellert.se/twain-sane/ as the version on the page above is only for snow-leopard and i'm using leopard.

UPDATE:

Seem to have a happy iPhone again. almost a whole day of my time wasted whilst I've been incommunicado.

My 3G iphone likes to turn itself off at random after the 4.0 update. Main problem I have is when it tries to turn itself on, it just displays the apple logo for sometimes a few minutes, sometimes a few hours. Then turns itself back on like normal. I go to use it and it acts ok, then it turns itself off and the apple logo comes up again until whenever it decides to restart normally.

Very annoying and hopefully there's a fix, at least until my newly ordered iphone 4 arrives in July.
