Changing Computer and syncing iPod

If The iPod syncs with your personal computer, what do I do if I'm gonna change computer? Do i have to reset my iPod ( erase its contents) and then sync ( and get new contents ) with the new computer?

I'm going away from home for a master degree and will stop syncing my ipod for a year.. it that a problem?

Welcome to the discussions,
you can back up your ipod manually on your new computer before you start using it regularly. Here's how to:
You may also restore your iTunes library from a backup before you start to get all your non purchased music. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1382 .
Set up your iTunes account and disable autosync in itunes, connect your ipod, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.
This will save data, pictures and settings to itunes. See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer.
Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your ipod got wiped during the first sync.
The rest of the data can be restored from the backup you made.
Restoring: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
When you return to your home computer, just do the whole process again.

Thanks for your reply.

I sync my iPod with the laptop i use at the office (but I'll have to stop using this laptop 'cause I'm leaving. I have a Powermac at home and I was thinking in starting syncing my iPod at home ( I didn't do that before because of Hard Disk Space).

when i connect my ipod ( that i sync with the office laptop) to my home computer ( powermac) nothing happens, I don't even see an ipod icon ( like an external drive like the older ipods)

how can i connect/sync then?

thanks

There is no desktop mode anymore for the ipod touch, that's why the icon is missing.
The ipod should show up in the device list in iTunes, ready to sync.
Verify your system requirements:
Mac system requirements (copied from http://support.apple.com/specs/#ipodtouch )
Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
Mac OS X v10.4.10 or later
iTunes 8 or later (9.2 for running iOS4)
But remember that your ipod will be erased during the first sync. To save your data, back up manually:
Make sure your Mac is authorized in iTunes. Disable autosync in itunes, connect your ipod, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.
This will save data, pictures and settings to itunes. See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766

Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your ipod got wiped during the first sync.

Hi, Have similar problem. When I bought my current ipod touch (1st gen) the computer I had used in conjunction with my ipod from the beginning was my work laptop. Now I have moved company and subsequently no longer have that laptop as I had to return it to the company.

I now have a new laptop, and when I went to sync my ipod to this computer itunes wont let me, the only option I get is to erase all that is there or cancel. Which considering how much time I invested in building my library up and adding cd's which I no longer have I am getting really frustrated as I'd like to be able to manage my music and add new stuff.

Please help and advise if there is ANY way of getting this done.

Many thanks in advance.
