Q: iPhone microphone not working

My new iPhone's microphone doesn't seem to be working properly. I can hear people who call but they can't hear me unless I switch to speaker mode.

Without speaker mode, I can only be heard if I shout VERY loudly. I've tried calling a few different people and the result is the same.

Any thoughts?

I made an appointment at the genius bar which was 2 hours away. I told them about the mic problem and she claimed to know nothing about it. I was sent away with my tail between my legs and made to feel like a naughty school boy. No replacement and no acknowledgement of this fault.

    What should I do now?

I also have the same problem. Mic works with calls but as soon as u use FaceTime, hands free speaker no one can hear u or video recording u can't hear what's been recorded.

I restarted the handset and restored countless times. I made an appointment at the genius bar which was 2 hours away (Meadowhall). I told them about the mic problem and she claimed to know nothing about it. She launched the voice memo app that came with the phone, tapped the mic and said there was nothing wrong with it. I was told I couldn't have a replacement and that it would sort it's self out eventually. She simply refused to accept the fault.. So no replacement and no acknowledgement of this fault from the 'genius' bar. I'm gobsmacked.

    What should I do now?

I have read this thread and searched the web and think that my issue is related, but perhaps idiosyncratic. I can be heard for the first 10 or 20 seconds of 5 out of 6 phone calls and then the other party hears nothing. Using a wired headset, speaker, or the handset all give the same sad result. My phone was working perfectly for 3 weeks, and out of the blue, I have this issue. I am traveling in Spain, at present. Wonder if there is a network issue. Will have to verify what the result is when I return to the USA.

Picked up my iphone today from an instore reservation.

I can record video, but can have a speaker call, but on a conventional call the caller can only hear me if I shout really loud and it's very crackly. Very disappointed. Did a restore with no avail.

Now have to go out of my way to fix the issue. After my iPad required a new charger out the box, now my iPhone4 out the box doesn't work either, it's not a great year for me and Apple.

I had the same exact issue 2-3 weeks ago. Turning the phone off or doing a complete restore did not fix the problem. Then I decided to reset the network settings and whether it was a coincidence or actually fixed the problem it worked. Since then I've not had the problem again.

Same problem here with 2 iPhone 4s.

Normal calls do not work, speaker phone works fine.
Memo won't record, it registers very hard tapping tho.
Camcorder function works fine as well as facetime.

Solution has been to return them to Apple.

I face the same problem with my brand new iPhone 4. While calling, other party cannot hear me as if I am talking from a far distance. However, the phone works fine with speaker and headphones. Also, the speaker makes a noise and the voice is not clear enough.

My iPhone 4 is now useless although all other functions work perfectly.

Apple, what to do now since there is no Apple store in my country as I bought my device from UK.

    Thank you,

I have the same problem.... and I think it's on the mainboard. I have 2 iphones 4. One is with the mic problem, I exchanged the mainboard and the problem went to other one. So, the problem seems to be in the mainboard.

But, if I bump the iphone the mic starts working...

The mic on my iPhone4 has just quit also. Similar symptoms to yours in that people I'm talking to hear only static or my voice very faintly. The voice/memo recorder also only really records static.

It happened suddenly and seemed to get better after a day or two but then went completely after another day.

I'm returning it to Vodafone New Zealand shortly but will have to wait 5-10 days for a replacement. There are NO Apple accredited means to speed this procedure up in NZ.

We don't even have a single physical Apple Store where you could walk in and talk to a Genius.

Yep, same here. When I hit the phone it comes back and then after some time it goes out again.
    No solution yet.
