Same thing has happened to me. I tried restoring it did not work. I tried restoring and setting up as brand new and still did not work. I'll try the turning it off for an extended period of time like the previous poster suggested. Anyone else with another solution?

Taking it to ATT tomorrow if it is still a problem--I'm leaving for vacation at 5 I need my phone to take pictures (albeit 3.2 megapixel pictures, but better than blurry colors)

Same issue here on the BRAND NEW iPhone 4. When opening the camera app all I get is a picture of the 'iris' and the camera/video icons are grayed out. I called Apple and was told they could get me a phone by the next day. Oops. It turns out the first person I talked to was in fantasy land. Calling again to discuss the issue, I was informed that it would take at least a week or two to get a replacement phone to me.

This is unacceptable. It's one thing to have a problem with a product, but to not be able to replace it for weeks is simply bad business. It's great that they sold so many iphones, but they should have held back a certain number for replacements for DOA phones.

Same issue here. Brand new phone - issue showed up as AT&T rep was demonstrating the phone to me. He tried several restart/resets with no effect. Then tells me I can go back to my iPhone 3g because of SIM incompatibilities. He has no replacement phones so I must leave with a broken device. Are you kidding me?

Spent 2 hours on the phone with apple. They couldn't find my Apple Care plan ( which I shouldn't need anyway since it's a brand new device) and finally did so agreed to mail me an exchange. Back at AT&T today I find out that they probably can't mail me a phone for exchange and are still looking into how to handle this.

I can't imagine any other industry where something like this could happen. They (Apple) even tried charging an extra $40 to ship me a new phone? Get out of here. I just paid for the phone and an extra $70 for Apple Care! If I wasn't a longtime customer with both ATT and Apple I would have left after my experiences over the past 24 hours. Just pathetic. Still waiting on a solution.

I am having the same issues and already did a restore to no avail. This is really going to suck if I have to get this replaced since they probably don't have any available. Anyone know of a fix yet? All I keep getting is the closed iris no matter what camera app I use. Tested it with face time and the other phone sees only black on their side while I can see their camera feed fine. This is very frustrating...

FYI- Just got back from the Apple Store and they did the same thing as what roblofu reported. They tried to restore, but no luck, so they ended up replacing the phone. Looks like it really is a hardware issue after all...

*One thing I gotta say is hats off to Ryan at the Grove Apple store who really helped me get this resolved even though it was still a mad house in there from the mob caused by the iPhone 4 launch. I didn;t have an appointment, and the Genius Bar was overflowing because they had closed it early on launch day causing every appt to get pushed to today all the way through the weekend which meant I would not have got this resolved 'til sometime next week. After talking with him and expressing my frustration, he not only found me a willing genius to look at it in between their customers, but he kept checking back with me the whole time until I left. Now that's the kind of service that keeps me buying Apple products again and again. You just don't see that kind of service in most tech companies today what with all the outsourcing going on. Kudos to both him and the Genius that helped me which I unfortunately forgot his name. But I thanked him profusely! 🙂

Just wanted to provide an update as well. I received my iPhone 4 on launch day, the first thing I did was facetime and it never worked. The camera facing me would freeze and cause facetime to crash. It would also freeze when I opened the camera app and switched to the front facing camera. The rear facing camera worked perfectly I might add.

Scheduled a genius appointment on my phone, went in the next day for a restore. Told the employee about these forum posts and he wanted to try the restore just in case but it did not solve the issue. Replaced the phone on the spot, all good to go now!

If you are having this problem, make a genius appointment and get it replaced. It's hardware, not software, as people have already figured out.

updated; made a genius appointment. the guy asked a few questions i said i have already done the restore process twice including from dfu mode. he said he would replace it if they had stock.

He went to check. The other genius beside him says we do have stock dont worry he always does that. we almost always have replacement stock for faulty stuff as replacements come in small boxes of just the unit itself.

SO i have new handset which is unlocked from apple and fully working.
