Syncing notes onto my iPad

My notes are synced between my Mac and iPhone. While the rest of my iPad has synced with both, the notes on my Mac and iPhone have not Ben transferred to my iPad. How do I do that?

Connect your iPad to iTunes. Click on the iPad icon to get to the summary. Scroll down to where it shows the sync option for notes and make sure it is checked. Then do a sync.

I've noticed that notes does not update "over the air" as claimed. You have to physically mount the iPad and do a sync. I think it is a MobilMe sync problem as it acts the same way on my iPhone.

If you are creating notes on your iPhone, be sure that under settings in notes you have it defaulted to iPhone instead of MobileMe. If you don't, the notes will not sync to your iPad once you connect it, as the notes are under MobileMe instead of physically on your Mac. I found that this was the reason that my notes were not syncing to the iPad. Once I switch the settings on the iPhone, the notes sync right onto the Mac and iPad when connected.

I've just been doing some testing and the results are quirky, at best.

To begin with, there is a distinction between the notes folder within Mac Mail and the notes which appear under the "Reminders" mailbox in Mac Mail. I use only the Reminders notes. The reason I do is because it is the only place where all notes are visible at one time regardless of the device.

That said, I found an anomoly. Kenneth, when you said you selected the iPhone option in settings for notes it got me thinking. I don't ever recall seeing that option. I went on my phone and sure enough there is that setting. But, when you look on the iPad there is no corresponding option there. I think what I'm seeing is the difference between the new IOS4 on my 3gs iPhone and the old OS 3.1.1 on the iPad. The reason I think this is the case is because the default setting on my phone was an account I seldom use and I never would have selected that in the past.

Now (confused yet? I hope not because it gets even better!), when I changed my phone to the setting you recommended, a MobileMe sync did not do an "Over the air" sync of the note I created on the phone. If I change the setting to "Mac" then a created note does get on over the air sync to the Reminders notes.

Nothing went to the iPad no matter what the setting. Notes created in the note app on the iPad do not update over the air. The iPad needs to be connected to my iMac and the sync then gets done.

My iPhone also needs to be connected to get a total sync of iPad created notes.

Now I am under the impression that the "notes" that MobileMe is supposed to sync "over the air" are those that show up under the notes apps on the phone and iPad, not the notes folder under the Mac mail account.

I actually said that I did not have the option of the iPhone. I only had the option of the email accounts that I have set up. I was responding to an earlier post that mentioned iPhone as the default note.

I think you're correct that we're seeing anomaly between the iOS on the iPad and the iOS 4 on the iPhone.

Are you talking about the MobileMe Mail here? I don't have a "Reminders" mailbox.

I don't recall when the "Reminders" mailbox showed up but it only has the notes subfolder under it. I seem to remember the notes folder being in the Mac mailbox but I could be mistaken.

Try creating a new note using the note option in your Mac mail and see if that creates the Reminders. The note option is the one with a yellow notepad for an icon.

Another thing I just discovered. When I used the setting of "Mac" on my iPhone, even though it immediately synced to my Mac via MobileMe, when I did a connected sync of my iPad, that note did not come across. Strange to say the least. After testing I have come to the conclusion that you have to use the iPhone setting for the notes to ultimately make it to your iPad. Either setting will get it to the iMac mail notes. Notes created on the iPad make it to both my iMac and my iPhone. That may change with the new IOS4 when it becomes available.
