iPhone 4: Error 9 on Restore

While trying to restore my iPhone 4, I repeatedly get an Error 9.
I tried also on my PC to restore with no luck.
Has anyone ever encountered this problem and know how to get past it?

Error 9: This error occurs when the device unexpectedly drops off of the USB bus and communication stops. This can occur if the device is manually disconnected during the restore process. This issue can be resolved by performing USB isolation troubleshooting, using a different USB dock connector cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.

SAmme error 9 here.

Got the phone a week ago and instead of restoring from old 3G backup i did a fresh setup. Everything went fine until i tried to sync my apps and music.

Itunes kept crashing. I eventually got everything updated and all seemed fine until I decided to listen to my music a few days later. The album art was either meessed up or non existant and song where skipping like crazy.

So I decided that something may have happened during the few times iTunes crashed and decided a restore would be a good idea ... start fresh. BIG MISTAKE ...

I tried all solutions here and quite frankly am tired of juming through hoops to fix a brand new $200 phone. I'm heading to Apple store to get a replacement and nothing more .. and that replacement better be BRAND NEW out of the box ... no second hand refurbs.

ATTENTION THOSE WITH ZAGG INVISHIELDS

If the Apple store is going to replace a iPhone (or any device with a Zagg on it) REMOVE it from the phone and place safely and flat on a piece of paper.

Once you get home goto the ZAGG site and register your shield (something you should have already done really) and setup the FREE (costs .01¢ actually) replacement. They offer a Lifetime Warranty.

I had this happen to me before and had absolutely no issues with getting a replacement from Zagg. I just explained the situation and the RMA was st up. Pretty easy really. I did it through e-amil as I contacted them about it first.

Good Luck.

I received this exact same error trying to install the 4.0.1 update on my iPhone 4. I read through several things and even tried RecBoot but couldn't get it to work. I finally saw something about antivirus so I turned off AVG. Still got error. I then uninstalled AVG and rebooted my PC and the restore worked finally! I am using Windows XP but it does appear Antivirus software is doing something to the firmware update of your phone. I'm no expert but it worked for me.

I went to Apple and they somehow revived my iPhone 4. The tech claimed it was in a "deep sleep". Mine was so far in a deep recovery I couls no longer turn it on. It was as if it was completly dead.

So I got it home and continued to have syncing issues.

I completly re-downloaded all my apps. Still had sync and crashing issues.

I read about AV software may be causing some issues so I had to uninastall my AV software (AVG does not have a temp disable option which is pretty stupid not to have) and I was still having crashing issues.

I re-did my entire music collection. Everything from scratch. I have a new model Nano plugged in that syncs just fine ... so it has to be either iOS 4 or the iPhone4 causing issues.

Really stinks and as typical Apple they are not addressing this issue. Hopefully there will be a iTunes update soon.

I did plug my iPhone into the same USB port that my iPod Nano was plugged into and it synced over 700 songs with no issues. So maybe it was my USB port I was using.

I also tried multiple computers, cables, USB ports, and was pretty much ready to send my iPhone back or run it over with my car.

However, after MUCH experimentation, I found a solution that worked for me. It turned out that the firmware restore actually DID work, but iTunes crapped out each time before resetting the "restore lock" flag on the iPhone.

I used RECBOOT (Google for it) and was able to successfully clear the restore lock, and the phone came to life right away. I was then able to restore my settings via iTunes without incident.

Hope this helps.

I had the same problem with the restore always freezing during the firmware stage. I tried all the fixes from the apple site and eventually called support. He simply had me unplug and turn off the phone, then hold the home button while plugging in the cable. This fixed the problem entirely! I was frustrated that such a small fix was successful after hours of much more complicated fixes. Hope this works for others.

This worked for me as well. Method was a little bit different. For me it went:
Try to do restore and update as normal.
Phone hangs while progress bar is at about 2/3 and iTunes says "Verifying Firmware".
Crash with Error 9.
Run RecBoot Exit Only and use it to exit recovery mode (I was able to do this without unplugging my phone or closing iTunes)
Phone reboots, progress bar comes up and goes all the way to the end. Reveal that the firmware update did in fact install, and phone is now up and running 4.0.1
Restore from backup!

Hi all,

I had real problems upgrading to 4.0.1 with a constant Error 9 three quarters of the way through and then countless (32 actually) restore attempts. Going through the help files making sure everything was in order like third party protections off etc etc. Hours on phone to Apple Support - who were trying really hard and very helpful but couldn't resolve it. Then I remembered that my old modem/wireless router did have some Firewall properties - turned them off after dusting down the manual and upgraded to 4.0.2 like a dream. Maybe my mistake/memory failure will help others...
