iPad losing time when asleep

I have noticed many entries on this problem on this and other sites. Here is my experience. The iPad holds time correctly when in use. The home wifi it is most usually used with is set with the correct time. The iMac it is synced with has the correct time. Left asleep and not on power, it will wake up with an incorrect time, always later than its last time of use. It's as if the iPad shuts down the power on the chip when asleep, expecting it to synchronise from the 3G source when it wakes up ... But then it misses out this step because it is on a wifi. Come on Apple, it's time you sorted this.

I fixed th lost time issue when on home wifi by using the solution for the problem of "lost" wifi discussed elsewhere and suggested by Apple.

Go to Settings->Brightness&Wallpapers. Turn AUTO BRIGHTNESS off and make sure you move the brightness slider away from minimum (you must see some blue color on the left of the slider).

This is the Apple suggested solution (at least until software update). And it worked for me.

Good luck.

Mine just started exhibiting this in the last couple of days. Today I was out at a coffee shop that had a wifi network, everything ok there. Put the ipad to sleep then drove home. It seems as if it lost about the amount of time it took me to get home where it was then connected to my wifi network. After a couple of minutes on the network it corrected itself, I do have it set to Automatic. A day or two ago I had to reboot it to get the correct time back. Never had this problem before and I've had it since it was released. I have the 3G version but have never activated a data plan since just about everywhere I go has wifi available.

Any further thoughts on this? I don't have any wifi or download issues that could be related.

It occurred to me that previously I was regularly turning the iPad off at night then connecting it to the charger which of course restarted it. I would leave it plugged in over night to charge. But several days ago because I was at work more than usually I did not restart it or connect to power because it pretty much had a full charge from very limited use. That was when I noticed the time error. Since rebooting it and using it frequently again I'm restarting it each night as I was before. I have not seen the issue since.

It may be because I was restarting it each night that I didn't see the issue when some of the others did. If so there is definitely an issue internally with it maintaing time accurately and perhaps just restarting it regularly is the solution for now. Anyway that's what I Intend to do until I see the issue addressed. Perhaps there's even a certain level of battery power/charge that affects this.

I despise all of you guys. I didn't notice this issue until right now. Now it drives me crazy. 😀

Maybe it'll work for you but since I've gone back to turning my ipad off each night and then restarting it either by connecting it to a charger or just manually restarting it I have not had the issue once.

I may have "synced" the time on mine this morning by turning off and back on the cell part.

I have the iPod with 3G and using a data plan. Anybody have this problem with the wi-fi only or the 3G unit but not using the data plan?

I have the 3G version but I've never activated a data plan since almost everywhere I am wifi is available. The first and only time I noticed the time issue was when I was tied up at work for a few days and was not able to use it. I never shut it off or charged it during this time because it keeps a full charge for days. Anyway that's when I noticed the time was way off. But turning it off each night and then connecting it to the charger which starts it up again or just manually restarting it has prevented the issue completely.

Since it holds a battery charge for such a long time I'm not sure battery level has anything to do with it. I'm thinking that there is a software issue that somehow fails to sync with a time server after a certain period and restarting the device makes it sync up to the server.
