Failed to Start because (account name) did not respond

I just got an isight, and I'm trying to video chat with my brother in NY. He's on a Windows XP Home, using broadband, without a router. He downloaded AIM. We both can see each other signed on, and the video icon comes up. He invites me to a chat, than I accept. I than get the message Failed to start because (account name) did not respond. When I try to invite him to a video chat nothing happens, on his end. I'm using a D-Link router and I've investigated opening some additional ports. Should this solve our problem?

Hi Gary,

Welcome to the Apple Discussion Pages

He needs to look at this page http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page12.html

In the first yellow box he will find a link to the Tuning Instructions if he has not done them.
See this Paragraph
If you have already read the Basic helps, or if they are too "Basic",
you should next read iChat AV Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) ,
starting with What do I need to start in iChat ?
Then check out How do I Get Video and Audio Chats with PCs ?
Assuming your PC buddy has a compatible camera properly connected, pay particular attention to the instructions concerning the extra XP file that may be needed (Edit: It is here under item 2, in the third center section. Second Edit: This file now seems to link to a full download of the AIM application. It is not known if this is intentional by AIM or an error. ) and to "Tuning" the camera and mic.

In the second yellow box he will find instructions on how to Enable AIM through the XP firewall if Service Pack 2 is installed.

You may need to Enable the ports in your device

Hi Lyra,

There is little wrong with the update. It does not Break things. SOme modems mainly D-Links and Netgears seem to have a bit of a problem.

The D-Links can need to have power ut and replugged in to reset them.

Netgears with the newest firmware need to stepback to a previous version if using UPnP.

Yours is the first ZyXel that I have heard problems with - so I would think the problem is elsewhere.

Can you list your setttings:

For Quicktime streaming ?
iChat Bandwidth Limit ?
Ports Opened and by which method ?
Number of devices in the connection set up ?
Which one is a DHCP server IF any ?
If Port Forwarding in the modem is pointing to the IP the Computer has now if using DHCP ?
Which version of Quicktime your are at ?

Try the Combo over what you have
Try the Quickktime 7.0.1 revisioner if at Quicktime 7.0.3

Try Running the Cron scripts if the copmuter is not ON and Awake 24/7 Use MacJanitor or Cocktail. (links in link)

Repair Permissions from the Disk Utility (Applicaions/Utilities) on your hard drive after each step.
