External Hard Drive Not Detected

My Powerbook is unable to detect my external hard drive when I connect it through the USB. I search for it and it is nowhere to be found. Any suggestions?

Powerbook G4, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Powerbooks don't put out enough electrical juice on the USB cable to power adequately many hard drives. One of the non-operating modes is that the external hard drive isn't recognized, or if it's recognized it can't be accessed. However, you said it's working, so glad it's a non-issue.
