I had the iPhone 3G for two years. After dialing a call, one brings the phone to one's ear, the screen goes black BEFORE contact with one's face, and the call proceeds. I never had a problem with this in two years - not even a single time.

The iPhone 4 I got early yesterday is consistently allowing my face to mute calls, hang up on calls, hold calls, etc. before the screen goes black. Of course I don't realize this because my cheek does it and I'm not looking at the phone, so it leads to repetitive dialing.

Anyone else having this problem? Any fixes? I may just have a dud and will have to return it.

Thanks.

iPhone 4, iOS 4

I am also experiencing this issue. It's like the iPhone 4's proximity sensor is not tuned properly or is not as sensitive as was in the iPhone/3G/3GS models.

During a call, invariably, my face will mute the microphone if i'm holding it with my right hand. If I'm holding it with my left hand, it will mute the caller.

This happens every single phone call. I'm not holding it far from my face either. It's literally 1 inch MAX from my ear at all times (it being the top of the iPhone near the speaker, where the sensor is).

They need to adjust this and release this in the first update that comes out. It's a terrible user experience.

I'm having the same issue. Really really irritating.

I, too, am experiencing this most annoying problem. On the older iphones, when you held the iphone to your face the proximity detector would register the contact and black out the display on the iphone. When you pulled the iphone away from your face all the buttons would become visible and usable.

Now, on the iphone 4 the exact opposite, and worse, happens. When you hold the phone to your face the buttons are visible and easily activated. I've hung up on my boss twice already! When you pull the iphone 4 away from your face the screen goes black, your call is disconnected, and the phone freezes, seemingly for about 45-60 seconds.

PLEASE fix this ASAP, Apple! It's maddening.

Me and one of my coworkers just got our new I Phones and are having the same problem, how does this happen? Don't they test these things before they release them? Or is the guy who tests the phones to drunk and keeps leaving his phone sitting at the bar? Steve get this fixed!!

I'm having the same issue. It's slow to blank the screen and will also turn the screen on in the middle of the call forcing a mute.

I emailed Apple on this topic this afternoon. I have an appointment with Apple Genius on Sunday 6/27/10. I can answer the phone and carry on a conversation. When I take the phone away from my ear ..... the screen is black and I cannot complete any other tasks (like access the phone book or keypad or initiate the speaker phone. When my caller hangs up at the end of the call ..... I have a black screen ..... If I press the home button ..... I get the opening screen and the but the slide to unlock slider will not function for about three minutes. Interesting when the Apple Center promptly called this afternoon to respond to my email ..... I answered the phone ..... but could not initiate the keypad to select "1" because I put the phone to my ear for the first two calls. The third call I just place the speaker on and was able to complete the call.

There is now two topics on this issue, both on the front page.

I'm also having the issue where it won't blank the screen soon enough and I'm hitting mute (or speakerphone depending on what ear I'm using) during a call.

I find myself having this same problem on my iPhone 4. The screen is not going dark when I answer a call and put the phone to my ear. I have either muted or hung up on several calls today. Hope the fix comes soon in iOS4.1

I just upgraded from the 1st generation iPhone to the new iPhone4 - none of the problems posted on this thread existed prior to receiving my iPhone4. My first thought was the case was interferring with the calls - screen goes in and out - mostly out to black and at times completely loses the call. Apple must address this major problem!

I am having the same problem. I keep "face dialing" or "face hanging up" or "face muting" people. It is really frustrating and I never had this problem with my 3G.

Just to confirm, this also happens on the 3GS with iOS4. I have put just about every call on either speakerphone or hold since I upgraded.
