I have not updated the OS to that level yet but did find a circumvention.
If the earphones are used the problems don't occur. However, in a call to my mother, she did say she was having trouble hearing me and stated I was sounding different. Works better anyway!

After upgrading from an iphone 3g to the iphone 4 a couple of weeks ago, the screen keeps turning on during a call and either puts the caller on speakerphone, hangs up on them, mutes them etc. This never happened with my iphone 3G. I Can't understand why this isn't getting more headlines, as this seems to be more of a problem than Antenaegate. I've not been on a call yet where the keypad keys haven't been accidentally pressed in some way. Also when a call is ended by the other person the screen blacks out so you can't end the call. When trying to use a system where you need to enter in #s while on the call (ie checking voicemail etc. where you need the keypad), the screen also blacks out and you can't use the keypad - very very frustrating. Apple needs to fix this ASAP and own up to their mistake this time - no more making excuses and trying to blame the user or AT&T for their obvious engineering and ios4 mistakes!

This is 100% correct. Almost everyone I know is complaining about the same problems. Why is there no response from Apple regarding these serious faults? I'm very disillusioned.

I had 3gs for over a year. Used both pre-software and post-software upgrade (4.0) and NEVER had the face mute thing happen once. Just got the new iphone 4 and has muted 8 times in the first hour I had the stupid thing. Love the darn phone, but geeeze...... do they do any testing. Talked to 4 other new owners and they all say the same thing......."love everything about the phone, but talking on it". Funny, but not so funny. Does anybody have a legit fix? Does apple even admit a problem or do they have the same response as the antenna thing? Help!!!!

I have upgraded to 4.0.2, and I am still having the issue, no-one at Apple seems to think that this is a big issue. I wonder how many people have had dissconnect problems because they pressed the end key with their face, and attributed the hang up to a reception problem. How hard can it be to give someone an ETA on the fix? I guess the ETA on when I will return this phone will be easier to predict.

Sadly, I have this isssue also. But Apple did say at the suprise conference that they will fix the issue in a fututre firmware.

This is driving me mad - I've never had an iPhone before (I waited for the iPhone 4!) and am now beginning to think I shouldn't have bothered! Seriously.... get this problem fixed!!! Every call results in me cutting people off, putting them on mute, suddenly getting them on loudspeaker or trying to facetime them.... or a combination of all of the above plus any other random screen operation that my face produces whilst I'm trying to talk to people! This is totally unacceptable and makes the iPhone 4 unfit for the purpose for which it was sold..... as a telephone.... Come on Apple.... this is serious!

I had an iPhone 3G for about 2 years and was determined not to upgrade to the 3GS as I knew the iPhone 4 would soon be released. I cued up outside a London O2 store at 6am on the day it was released as I’d waited months for it.

Now I've got it, I wish I had got the 3GS. The iPhone 4 is amazing apart from one MASSIVE flaw.... you can't use it to call people.

The proximity sensor does not work!

    SORT IT OUT APPLE!!!!!

Apparently Apple has acknowledged this issue and the IOS 4.1 update should fix this proximity sensor problem. Check out http://www.cultofmac.com/ios-4-1-beta-2-fixes-proximity-sensor-issues/52712

I have this same problem. During calls my cheek mutes or hangs up. Never had this problem with my 3G or 3 gs. Apple needs to fix this quickly!!!

Probably 15% of the time my phone calls someone or goes on speakerphone. This is my first iphone and I am entirely disappointed.

OS4.1 does not fix the proximity issue. I just bought a new iphone last Friday and experienced the issue. I then upgraded to 4.1 when it was released and I am still having the issues on almost every call today.

I used the iPhone first generation for about four years, and I've never had any issues regarding the screen goes on by it self during the phone calls, just six days ago I purchased the new iPhone 4 and was very happy with it until people starts to say "Hallo.. Hallo..!!" I realize that my face accidentally hits the mute button, it's really annoying it keeps happening very often.

Please apple find a solution for this issue, it's too shame to have such a problem with a great mobile phone, we really loved the iPhone it just always set up a new benchmark.
We are very loyal to the brand and we want to keep it like that.
    Thank you.

I am also having this face dialing problem with my iPhone 4. I bought this iphone on 14th Sep. and it came with iOS 4.1. I am really frustrated with this issue. Does any one here knows when apple is going to fix this issue?
