Samsung ML-2525W Series - "Printer offline"

Just got a Samsung ML-2525W laser printer and have it connected via USB to my MacBook (OS X 10.6.4). First job prints fine but the second job fails to print, and the Print Queue indicates "printer offline".

If I unplug the printer and power it on again, the second job prints immediately.

Any suggestions? All software updates are installed, and I have already deleted and re-added the printer in Print & Fax Preferences.

Thanks!

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Sounds like you have a problem with this printer. Some devices do have timer settings for port connections, but this it usually for the network port - not the USB port. As a test you could try a different USB port on the MacBook and a different USB cable. If the printer supports PCL or Postscript you could also look at trying one of the Generic drivers included with 10.6. If however the printer only supports a Samsung proprietary printer language and you already have the latest driver version available for this model then I would look at getting the printer replaced or at least contact Samsung support and see if there is any firmware update available or known issues they may be able to help you with.

Unfortunately I haven't managed to figure out what's causing the problem, but I have at least discovered that I can get subsequent jobs to print just by unplugging the USB cable from my MacBook and then plugging it back in quickly (before I was having to shut down the printer entirely between each print job). Annoying but at least you can get everything to print.

I hope Samsung is able to fix this with a driver update. Very frustrating for a printer that is advertised as compatible with OS X.

Edited to add that I've emailed Samsung support about this issue. If they have a fix I'll post it.

This happens sometimes with my Kyocera FS-1920 (since using Snow Leopard). At the moment the printer is both "Printer ready" & Printer offline" (nothing unusual!).

In Print Queue, assuming you've actually got a list of completed jobs, they (hopefully) will all say "Completed" on the left. If you get the "Printer Offline" message and the printer doesn't print, the last job (second line up in the list) before the one you are actually trying to print will quite likely still say "Printing" (whether it did or not). Click on this job to highlight it, and choose "Delete" from the Print Queue Toolbar. This job will stay in the list, but be marked "Deleted".
The current job should now print. Not perfect, but might avoid unplugging or switching printers on & off.

I have had this same issue with this same printer. I found this forum this morning and did the following:

1. Uninstalled bundled software by running installer on disk and selecting "uninstall" instead of "quick install"
2. Downloaded the samsung printer drivers link posted earlier and installed it.
3. Went to print and fax settings and clicked plus and added the bonjour printer.

The Problem was fixed and the printer prints job after job flawlessly and wirelessly. I should note that it does not work if you select the usb printer instead of the bonjour one. It problem persists if you do. Also, I believe the original setup software configures the wireless on the printer upon initial install of the software. So you may have to install the software to configure the printer to connect to the network, and then uninstall the software and add it via bonjour. Annoying I know, but it works flawlessly now, even the supply levels are working.

You do not need to install the software to setup the wireless network.
I have connected the printer to the wired network, then installed the printer.
The printer will be found with Bonjour, so setting it up is a breeze.
After installation, you can use the Preference panel to open the printers webpage.
In that webpage, I chose the "Network Settings" tab, and with the "Wireless" button, I setup my network.
After setting it up I could detach the network cable, and my printer was available wirelessly.

Wow I called Samsung Canada Support regarding the Firmware version (as the one that ships with the printer is 1.0.07 and there is a 1.0.08 available) and they told me to "just download the exe file and run it on your Mac". Brutal. I think just uninstalling the dirver that came on the cd and then using the Apple supplied one seems to have fixed the issue.
