My iphone 4 is switching itself off and the only way to get it back on is to perform the hard reset, when I press the sleep button or let it sleep on its own occasionally around 1 in 10 times it wont wake up again. All buttons are un-responsive and the only way to get the phone back on is to perform the hard reset.
I have been back to O2 and they said it may be a software fault? is anyone else aware of this? or having the same problem?

Many thanks,

iPhone 4, iOS 4

I'm also having this problem. Is it software related?

I've tried a complete restore but problem is still occuring. It seems if you let the phone sleep for more than 1 hour it will not come out of sleep unless a soft reset is performed by holding down home button and power button. After restore I didn't install any old apps etc so it is a problem with the phone itself.

02 tried to fob me off saying it was a software fault but have now agreed to exchange the phone . . . . . . when they get some more stock in....

Same issue here except that it was much harder to bring the phone to life again through different combination of hard soft resets and attaching the power to it. When it came back on the battery was at 75% (my original thought was that the battery must be totally drained).

My iPhone 4 was switching off for no reason. This seemed to resolve the issue for me:

    settings>>general>>reset>>reset network settings

Hopes this helps all of you with this same problem.

I have this issue, but it happens to me during calls and seems to be an issue with the proximity sensor. Once the call ends, my phone becomes responsive again. Not sure if that's relevant to your issues but I figured I'd mention it.

This worked for a while, but it went dead again. Tried another restore, this time as a new phone. This didn't resolve the issue, phone died after about 5 minutes. Have an appointment at Apple (100 miles away) in the morning, I'll post what I find out. Very FRUSTRATING!

Been to the apple store and a replacement has been ordered for me. Will be here tomorrow. O2 store has also offered a replacement but they won't have stock for 3 weeks.
Really not sure what to do. I'm afraid that apple will give me a refurbished unit, although I can't see them having refurbs yet. 02 would give me a new phone in retail box.

Software reset and restore doesn't fix this problem. I even reinstalled iTunes on my mac but problem is still there.

    Hope you all get sorted!!

    Hi Everyone..

I can't stop myself from sharing this info about the topic. My Iphone4 is 10 days old now and goes in coma almost everyday sometime in night and comes back with hard reset in the afternoon. No idea who call me in that time only God knows.. so this is the problem...

What is the solution?? this morning I called my O2 Customer Service and they said they have never heard of such a thing so they advised me to go to O2 Store.Next thing I did I went to O2 store. They guy was last interested in listening what nightmare I am having and the guy over the counter helped me and I GOT it !

Solution (as advised): Switch off your IPhone at night before sleeping.I said oh really, are you joking? he said no and to prove what he has said he told me an example that our Iphones are like our cars and computers and as they need rest, IPhone needs it too. I could not believe what he just said..I waas quite surprized why is he there with such a vast knowledge and he said he has not heard anything like this with IPhone4.

anyway came back, called my helpline told this story as it is and the guy over the phone appologized for this offending help and advised go back to them ans ask for replacement as it i sin warranty.. Lets see what happens in morning but the question is "getting new iphone 4 will not resolve the issue so what is the solution"?????...

    will update you tomorrow... LoL

hold down the bottom button and the power button... it reset the phone. you should do it at least once a week to reset the software.
hope this works for you it did for me.

Argh, I just had the same thing for the first time today. I've had the phone for a week and up until now I've been really happy with it (aside from a bit of dodginess connecting to my home network).

Then today, was listening to some music with the phone sitting happily on the desk, and click, off it went. I looked down, thinking perhaps the album had finished but NO, black screen. No amount of button pushing seemed to help.
Out of desperation I did a hard reset and it came back to life but... whoa. Not cool. I hope it's an isolated occurrence!

    Hi,

I've recently purchased and iPhone 4 and started experiencing this problem too.

I really don't want to take the phone back just to be replaced with another malfunctioning phone, so has anyone heard anything from Apple which suggests that this is a software failure which can be remedied with an update?

My iPhone 4 is also having this problem, it just started yesterday. It did it once yesterday afternoon, and 3 or 4 times today, when I've left it alone for longer periods of time. I'm SO annoyed! Every time, I've had to do a full or hard or soft [I'm so unclear as to what it is, but holding both buttons down for 20-30 seconds] to get it to turn back on. I tried plugging it in to my computer once, but it said the phone was not recognized and would need to be restored...I did the "hold both buttons" thing, and on it came again!

So annoyed! I read on another thread that someone had this problem when it go under 65 degrees F, but it's been colder than that for a while here and that was never a problem, not to mention that it's always happened in my well-heated house. I've read that it might be some kind of corrupt app or photo, but I REALLY don't want to do a full restore on my phone as it's such a pain in the rear end. Plus, there's no way to know WHICH app or photo it might be...any one out there have any ideas???

    Thanks in advance!

I had the same problem after just two weeks of using the iphone 4. I called Apple and the tech guy advised me to reset all settings : Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings (not Erase All Content). Since then, my iPhone has been behaving well ..... (fingers crossed!)

Hope it works for you too.
