Problems installing a Brother Printer

Hello,
I just bought a new powerbook earlier this week (my first time using a mac) and am trying to transfer all my programs and files from my old PC. I currently use a Brother HL-1440 Laser Jet printer, and while the installation guides say that it can work with a Mac, it doesn't allow me to install on my computer. Everytime I put the disk in and click on the StartUp menu icon that comes up, instead of leading me to the installation, I get an error message that says I do not have Classic and cannot run this program, and it just shuts down. I've tried searching for classic on my computer, but Im' not really sure what it is or how to access this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

You have two problems.

1 you aren't using the correct drivers. You need to go to <http://solutions.brother.com/hl1400/download/drivers.html#macOS> and download the drivers for your version of the Mac OS. You currently have the OS 9 drivers. They will not work in OS X. If your machine is new, it probably has 10.4 installed, so you should use the drivers for 10.3 or later.

2 you don't have Classic installed. In order to install Classic, you need to insert the system disc which came with your Mac and look for the Install Classc option. <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh763.html> may be of help. Installing Classic will allow you to install the drivers you currently have. Note that those drivers will work only for applications which run under Classic, not for native OS X applications.

Note that the Brother should have the correct drivers for OS X 10.3 or later on the system disc which shipped with the printer. Also, as the HL1440 is an older printer, OS X should have the drivers as well. Have you tried the standard OS X printer install sequence?

1 boot the Mac

2 turn on the printer

3 plug the printer into the Mac

4 launch Printer Setup Utility

5 click 'add'

6 look for the printer in the dialog box that pops up. If no printer, click on 'more printers'.

You might want to look at <ttp://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh441.html> and <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106707>.
