iOS4 Crashed my iPhone?

Last night I was trying to update my 3g's OS to iOS4.

At first it looked as if the update was going well, but then my iPhone started into some continuous rebooting cycles. It would be at the start-up screen with a loading bar under the apple symbol. Every time the bar filled up a little less than halfway (sometimes more), the screen would flash white and then it would reboot.

I let it run this way for about 2 hours to see if it would improve, but nothing positive really happened.

I've tried everything from manual restarting, to unplugging it and then plugging it back into iTunes. But now iTunes can't seem to detect it, and when it does, I click on something (even by accident) and the whole programs stops responding.

I've also shut it off for the night, but every time it starts up,the same thing happens (as mentioned above).

Help?

***EDIT***
I've also just tried to uninstall and reinstall iTunes. I'm now getting the pop up that says "iTunes cannot connect to the iPhone because an invalid response was received from the device"

I tried updating my 3G to 4.0 OS and it has also crashed my phone!
I can get my phone to the recovery mode and it will attempt to restore but all it will do is stay on the screen " preparing to restore iphone" and then my computer will not recognize the device and in the end i get an error either 1603 or 1604

I've tried two computers and same thing =(

It didn't work :{

**UPDATE**

I got as far as restoring my phone, it's on the new OS, from the looks of it (literally..it doesn't look like the previous OS), but all my apps, music and contacts are wiped out...it's pretty much empty.

When i try to back it up using the last backup data I have, it goes back to continuous failed reboot cycles..

This has happened to me too when I tried to update it; the silver apple symbol, the loading bar underneath filling up to 1/3, crashing, and starting all over again.

I noticed the reason why itunes is unable to detect your phone is because when the phone restarts itself when the loading bar reaches a certain point, hence disconnecting itself. The only time itunes detects the phone is when the loading bar is in the process of filling. However, the phone doesn't give itunes enough time to prep for the restore and restarts itself.

I have the 2nd gen iPhone and I updated my phone overnight because of the long backup process. I awoke up 6-7 later to find it wasn't done. I found it just doing that circle "thinking/loading" sign spinning over and over. I disconnected it and took it to class thinking it'll finish by then. 3 hours later, it's still spinning. I did a hard reboot by holding home and the power button. When I turned it on again was when the apple symbol-loading bar-crash started to happen.

I tried the Try Recovery and/or DFU Mode also; a person walked me through doing it when I called 1800myiphone. It help fixed the apple-loading bar-crash...BUT and it cause a new problem. When the phones goes into sleep mode it completely turns off. The only way to turn it on is by hold both the home and power button. I did notice that if you leave it charging it won't turn off completely. But if you unplug it and it goes to sleep, it turns off. In fact, if you tap the power button and home button a few times it'll turn it off that way too.

I then tried Recovery mode 4 times after without backing up or syncing it but it still turns off when it goes to sleep.

Next I tried "Reset All Settings" (may not be exactly what it says but something like it). All that did was display the circle "thinking/loading" sign spinning over and over. I left it for 6 hours and it didn't stop.

Next I took it to the Apple store. All they did was what the person at 1800myiphone told me to do which didn't help it at all. Then they told me you're out of warranty and my only option was to buy another one for $199.99.

My only guess as to what caused it is that I updated it on my laptop and maybe it going into sleep mode when I left it updating caused some problems..? I don't know. Either way, this blows. If anyone knows how to fix this please share...

I'm having the same issue with my 3GS crashing after trying to update to 4.0.1. I ended up restoring to what I thought was my recent backup, but it did not take (I think). I have my pictures, and most of my apps, but my contacts and notes are gone! Am I doing something wrong? I have another older backup that I can use, but I don't want to lose it since this one did not go so well. Thanks!
