Had the same problem. The problem happens when Wifi is enabled and mobile data is disabled. When the phone goes to sleep, it tries to switch form Wifi to mobile data and it crashes. Try keeping mobile data enabled and it should not crash. do let me know if it does. Definitely a serious bug, Apple!
Same thing happened to me last night. Especially awkward as I use the iP4 as an alarm clock. When I woke it up from the dead, the alarm started ringing.
This happened to me after 2 days of ownership!! EEEK! Hard reset worked. Thank you! If this continues, I wont hesitate to demand a replacement phone! This is bad!
I woke up this morning to find my phone fully charged but dead.....followed the steps in this thread, and it came back on. Not sure if I'm going to bother going into my apple store today if it's a software issue. If not, I'm at least calling apple.
I've had my iPhone 4 for about 2 months and it was 98% charged earlier and my daughter called the house phone to ask why I wasn't answering my iPhone. I picked up the phone and it was dead. I plugged it into the charger and still dead. Plugged it into my Bose Stereo that has the iPhone port and still dead. I started to panic... got online and found your answer to hold both buttons for 30 seconds and BAM -- LIFE!
I have an iphone 4 since 2 months, I was using without activating the sim card last 2 days, only by wifi connection.
I have found the phone with a black screen.
tried soft reset hard reset, 10 seconds, 30 seconds... every kind of reset combination, I have even disconnected/reconnected the battery.
Unfortunately, my iphone is dead!!! Not waking up...
Thanks Apple!!!, Thanks Steve Job!!! You have a wonderful buggy phone!!!
Apple > Microsoft!!!!
Same thing to my iphone4... The people are calling and the phone doesnt react at all. Mine is "never locked" edition and after a two days of ownership, it died!!! Btw, i switched off wifi manually before leaving the office and locked the phone from the power button, after 5 minutes i had a succesful phone call and when i arrived home the phone was dead. So maybe, its not the wi fi problem alone as it is. The hard reset is solving the problem for now!!!
My iPhone 4 died on Friday. It had a full charge, and I took it for a walk to listen to music. It simply turned itself off and died. No hard reboot, charge, or connection to the MacBook made any difference. I tried multiple combinations. I left it sit 24 hours and started all over again. Zippo.
This is especially an issue because I live overseas and returning to the U.S. tomorrow for a business trip there. I can't communicate, and this is a disaster. I'll call Apple later and see if they can help me.
