Hey thanks for the tip about a hard reset. I took my previous iPhone 4S to Apple because of this problem and they replaced the phone without mentioning this tip which is odd. Anyway, within days my new replacement did the same and so I suspected that this was a common problem. A google search brought me here and your hard reset tip worked like a charm.

So thanks for that, you saved me a lot of frustration.

Thanks so much for this easy fix. Worked for me, and I am glad it did because I am 2 hours away from an Apple Store.

    Try this:

Plug it into the charger---plug charger into the wall socket.

Hold down the Home Button----keep holding it down.

While holding down the Home Button---Unplug the charger from the wall,

Wait about 5 seconds ( still holding down the Home Button )

Now Plug the Charger Back In ( home button still being held down )

Now Release the Home Button and see if it boots up.

Whew!!!  I was getting ready to go to work, plugged my iPhone in the car charger and for the first time, tried to also plug in my Jawbone speaker in the headset plug to listen to a podcast (although I could have used Bluetooth).  Maybe plugging in two devices is what did it, but for the first time, after having the 4S for almost a year, the phone died.  A thousand thoughts ran through my mind about what to do.  Is there still a warranty?  Do I need to get a new phone?  Do I need an Apple phone (I got the 55G one but I began to reconsider if I really needed that much storage)?  Then I Googled "Dead iPhone" and the world came back into view.  Although I have adquate storage in the iCloud, I wasn't really sure just what was up there.  I'm so happy I didn't have to fnd out.  Thank you for this wonderful answer.  Hopefully, it will never happen again.  The phone has become an essential part of my everyday life and without it would be quite a set back.

Thanks for the info.  Hard reset worked for me.  Didn't even know there was such a thing for the iPhone.

This was a lifesaver. I thought I was fixing to have to buy a new phone.
