After all these years, I had the same problem with my handed down iphone 4, thought I was going to have to buy a new one. Thankfully I found this solution and it worked. Wow, just wonderful. Thank you mongooseblarg.
Do a hard reset. Hold down both the power button and the home screen button at the same time for 30 seconds. It probably got locked up. Happened to me too.
Thanks - I had the same thing happen today - started to get frustrated thinking I would have to wait until Monday to take it - but took a second to look it up under support.
Thanks for the advice. Mines was dead too. Then when I did what you suggested it works. Why does the Iphone 4 dies on its own. Even when I press the power button when it went dead, that didn't work? Apple need to address this problem. Thanks again!
happens to me all the time, and it's usually when i have wifi on. I think its because when the phone goes to sleep, it disables wifi and switches over to cellular data, which is known to crash the phone's os, so the phone just feezes in the middle of sleeping. Just hold down power and home until the apple logo pops back up
I had the same problem! I had 80% battery....set my phone down in the office and the next time I looked at the phone and tried to make a call it was dead. No power and couldn't get it to work until I pressed home and lock button for about 20 seconds with it plugged in.
Buggy iOS software! Not a good sign with all the other iPhone 4 woes....
Thank goodness for this thread. Mine did exactly the same thing today - the phone was on about 70% battery. I came out of a meeting, checked email, sent a text, drove back to the office, to find the phone was completely dead. Charged it up - still dead as a dodo. Searched Google for 'Apple iPhone 4 dead', but found nothing that wasn't related to Antennagate. I rang AppleCare to have a rant but it was outside the office hours, so I searched some more and found this thread.
Thanks guys, iPhone 4 is now back up and running after a hard reset. I think I'll still call and have a small rant tomorrow though, as it's a pretty serious bug.
This just happened to mine. Woke up this morning and found it was off and unable to hard reset. Not recognized when I connect it to iTunes, either. This never happened with my 3G. Going to the Apple Store today.
This also happened to me. I Place my phone on my glass dinning room table to go in the kitchen to make me a sammich and about 15 minutes later I came back only to find out my phone was totally unresponsive. So then I preformed a hard reset and resuscitated it back to life. This happened in v4.0
