I too have experienced the mysteriously dead Iphone 4. After getting turned away by the apple phone support (because i refused to pay $70 to extend the phone support) i jumped on here to check if anyone else had the same problem. the hard reset thankfully worked for my phone.

Yeah man happened to me too once. I came from school and i thought it was out of battery life so i plug it in but it still wont turn on and no alerts that its out of battery. Tought it was gone and was already gonna go give it back but then it turned on somehow. Posting this to show that its a real issue and so apple will look into this.

Wow. I was just talking about how the phone had not sent a critical email for the last time and not two hours later...dead. Apple has a mess on their hands. This phone has more software bugs than all of my electronic devices combined. I can't believe how popular it is.

Thank-you so much for posting the solution! I was about to go to the AT&T store.I had 95% battery life on the phone and thought that no way it should be dead! Last night,I walked away and came back to find my phone appeared to be DEAD. I could not resuscitate it! I plugged it in and..nothing! For crying out loud! We just got the Iphone 4s June 29,2010! (we had the Original ones before this and no problems what-so-ever!)
I thought that I would search the vast internet,(this morning before trekking to AT&T store and most likely making a fool of myself!) on my computer to see if I could find answers. It took me a half hour and I came upon this site. I thought what the h@ll!,I will try that. AND IT WORKED!!!!!!!

My phone was totally dead today. It was fully charged when I left the house and when I got to the mall it was completely lifeless. As I got home I charged it again but wouldn't turned on. Was very worried. Started regretting getting the first batch. So thankful to the people who posted the simple fix. Apple, you should take care of this issue. We pay so much for your gadgets and we encounter problems such as this.

I almost had a cardiac arrest!

Here I was on a lovely evening, posting pictures and tagging friends.
    Then, my phone just died!
I thought I my battery went dead, tried to recharge but nothing!!

Thank goodness for google and discussion forums.
Otherwise, I would have locked myself in my closet, and cried my heart out!
    Will sleep well tonight!

Apple needs to fix this problem!

    Thank you for your advice!

I've had my iphone 4 since October and was devastated when it went dead New Year's Day shortly after I transferred New Year's Eve photos to my computer. I had recently spent hours posting my iphone calendar with 2011 appointments and had visions of having to repost, etc. The hard reset suggestion on this website worked! Hope software glitch doesn't recur and Apply can solve this software problem, so we all don't have to deal with this in the future.

OMG!!!! I am so glad I found this page! My phone went dead today. I thought I was gonna have to get a new phone. Did just as was suggested: hard boot - hold down both power buttons for 30 seconds. I woke from the grave! Thanks so much guys!

Thanks so much for the work around this "suddenly dead" iPhone. This has saved me a trip to the Apple store in snow and ice. Holding down the Home and "On" button for 30 seconds brought my phone back to life.
