There is only one solution:

You need to use your bluetooth earpiece. Your phone iPhone will always answer when you press your earpiece answer button.

It's not any of the b.s that you see in this thread. i.e. temperature, or re-entering names to your phonebook from scratch, etc.

Apple should be able to work it out in a couple of years. Give them time.

By the way - do you know that nobody at Apple has even read this thread, nor cares about this thread. If you don't believe me, ask the tech at the genius bar next time you're there. This is only a way to help each other. Apple still denies the problem even exists! They are more than willing to update your operating system, do a system restore, have you schedule more appointments, etc.

What are you going to do, buy a Blackberry?

Sorry, this is not a solution for me. I want my button to work. So I can answer my f.phone. So I can set my f.photos as wallpaper. It`s nomore then a replaceable object - not a religion. If I cannot fix it wihout beating my brains off, I start looking for an Android phone. Iphone is way to buggy and it transpires a very wrong way of understanding the diversity. Shall we start complaining about iTunes? About battery draining in IOS5? About f.wifi syncing? About the impossibility to change the icons after my crapytaste? What I am doing in my home with their product I overpaid them for is my business.

You can see more and more throu this „philosophy” the old crook selling you a crummy watch. The old crook with an upgrade in marketing and paranoia.

After much tought it seems to be a random problem related to update and bakup..the hardware of the iphone it`s ok but the software and restore from previous version seems to be the problem .I have downgraded my iphone from ios 4.3.3 to 4.2.1 and the problem dissapeared , after upgrading to a beta of ios5 had no problem and then i downgraded to ios 4.3.5 and the problem reappeared i updated to ios 5.0 final and still had the same problem .Than i downgraded again to 4.2.1 restoring from the 4.2.1 backup and the problem dissapered , after upgrading again from 4.2.1 to ios 5.0 and restoring from 4.2.1 bakup i have no locking problems .There is a problem with the iphone backup/restore system that breaks phone functionality between backups and that`s my final tought .Hope this helps someone .

My girlfriend has had an Iphone4 for a year and has this problem frequently.

It seems to be cured by a cold switch off and switch on - something very few people do.

The phone often doesn't display a network name or signal level - again this is cured by a cold power cycle.

She is on the UK Virgin network, PAYG.

We took the phone back to the "Genius Bar" just before the warranty expired and they reproduced the problem OK. They reset the phone, did an OS update, but it still did it, so she got a new one. Now, a few months later, the new one is doing it too.

Apple obviously seem to have problems locking onto certain GSM networks in certain circumstances.

I haven't yet tried loading IOS5... the problem is that this issue seems so widespread that if it was something obvious, it would have been fixed ages ago.

I wonder if it is network dependent; historically nearly all Iphones sold in the UK were on £30+ per month contracts, on networks who presumably made sure they worked OK. Virgin runs on the T-Mobile network, which I am on, but my GF and I can put our phones (mine is a Nokia E51) side by side and I get max signal while she gets zilch. At any other time, the Iphone4 shows a lower signal but that is normal for Iphones compared to "normal" phones anyway; they seem to prefer a stronger signal area. She is on Virgin because she is a very light user and Vigin's now-discontinued PAYG scheme with DD auto-topup, and 30p/day for up to 25MB of data usage, suits her usage very well.

I have the same problem for some time, iPhone4 with iOS 5.1.1.

External headset can always answer the call. But I don't have it connected all the time.

I have lots of contacts, many of them came through restoring an old backup, synchronising with various apps, etc. And then what? I have these for many years. My old first gen iPhone had no problem with them. Even the iPhone 4 was OK for a year. Until my warranty has expired 🙂

Apple has time to fix this until the next iOS update in September. If they won't, they lost a customer. We sell all 8 iOS devices at home. I love this brand but I cannot make phone calls with love. It should just work.

Wow! You would think by now after all the complaints and all the seperate boards and all the updates this would be FIXED! I miss more calls than I can answer. I've had iphones for 7 years and as much as I love them i think they are to focused on getting out the next model than fixing the problems we all continue to have now....

k...i'm done ranting. Lets hope someone who can make a change does it

If your iPhone acts up or doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do, a simple reset might be the cure.

Simultaneously hold down the Home button located in the lower front center and the sleep/wake button located at the top right corner of the phone. Continue holding until the screen goes black and the white Apple logo appears. You can release both buttons once you see the Apple logo. The iPhone will now restart and should function normally.
