I have synced my iPhone many times but this is a new problem. When I snyc it it backs up fine, then syncs the notes, then a dialog box comes up with the header "Adding files" and the message "Processing: 20100519 190557 4.m4a" comes up with a progress bar. The progress bar freezes up and iTunes freezes up. I can do nothing else on my computer except open the task manager to close iTunes, then the computer works fine.
I Had the same problem, M4A file is voice recording format, if that is the case then your down loaded apps will not be updated as the sequence of sync for apps comes after voice, the best option is uncheck all options of sync from you phone and start sync one at a time starting from apps & voice in the last. good luck
I'm having this problem too. I downloaded iPhoneBrowser, as someone suggested this in another post and tried to find the file in the recordings folder. Like you, the file has a number at the end, and so appears to be a copy of another recording. I hope someone finds a solution soon as I haven't been able to put any more music on.
I once had a song file that did the same thing. You've got to watch the progress bar, find the file that's corrupted, delete it from your computer, then try again.
I was seeing the same thing. I deleted the .m4a voicememo files from iTunes and also manually deleted all voicememo files using the voicememo app from the iphone. Then tested a sync with one app and it worked... 😉
I deleted all my voice memos from both iTunes (after copying them to CD) and my iPhone and this fixed the problem! I am now able to sync it again. Thanks!
Does apple even acknowledge this bug? I have deleted all the voice memos on the device and on my PC (though lord knows i should not have to do this) and i am still locking up when itunes is 'Backing up' my device... the same little window indicating adding an m4a file.
I left the machine to run over night with one CPU flat out on this and it made no discernable progress.... So i am stuck with an iPhone i cannot sync... which *****.
I experienced this problem ever since upgrading to the latest iTunes version. When connecting my iPhone to my computer synchronize files, the system always locked up (consuming hours of CPU until I killed the process) iTunes and then my computer on a filename like: 20100722 222747.m4a
I followed suggestions to restart the iPhone (no help) or reinstall iTunes (no help) but upon deleting the voice files (as suggested here), this solved the problem for me.
Thanks to those that have found and published this fix. You're brilliant and enabling me to get back to productive work!
Same problem - it was a voice memo file. I just made a note of the file number, searched for it using the Windows search tool, found it on my computer and deleted it. Then having worked out what it was, deleted it from my phone too. Fine thereafter
Why is this considered an answered topic? Deleting all of my voice memos is not an option and completely removes a large part of the functionality I gain from my phone. Sure, deleting them allows the phone to finish syncing and so the glass is half full but it's no good if the glass is half full of poo. Apple, fix it!
