FIX FOR: iPhone 4 battery draining fast, phone running hot

I had the same issue many have reported here and in comments on blogs, where their +_battery was draining at least twice as fast_+ as on an iPhone 3GS with iOS 4.

Some threads suggest +_this happens to iPhone 4 when restored from a 3G or 3GS_+, and indeed, that's what I'd done. A few people said that resetting to factory settings and installing everything fresh solved the issue, giving them better battery life than they'd seen on any prior iPhone.

Many of my apps have files or settings stored in them, so I didn't want to have to set everything up again. A fresh install is a real pain.

Deep in an iPhone 3G thread mentioning a similar battery problem after upgrading to iOS 4, someone said they'd deleted all their mail accounts, and set those up fresh, which solved the issue for them. I tried that today, and it worked.

*_BEFORE AND AFTER_*:

Thursday and Friday, the iPhone 4 went from 100% to 15% in under 6 hours. Today, after this fix, the iPhone 4 is at 87% after 12 hours. Thursday and Friday the phone was hot to the touch whenever I picked it up. Today it's always cool. Apps usage and movement among coverage areas on each day have been exactly the same. The only change was resetting up mail.

*_STEPS TO FIX_*:

Do this on WiFi so you can sync and check mail fast.

1. Delete all mail accounts.

2. If MobileMe user, delete MobileMe account, and remove all Calendars, Contacts, Notes, etc., from the phone (so you don't have dupes when you re-sync).

3. Turn off phone, and back on again.

4. If MobileMe user, add MobileMe account first. I enabled all options, even Find My iPhone (Thursday and Friday I had it off, in case it was using power). Wait long enough for contacts and calendars to sync, check to make sure. I use MobileMe mail on Push.

5. Add back each additional mail account. I have 5. I am in a marginal coverage area, so I set these accounts on Fetch Hourly. I also have "Preview 5 Lines" (I think the default is Preview 2 Lines. This doesn't matter.)

6. Go into Mail, go to the MobileMe Inbox, and scroll your way down letting the messages come in. You can see them come in when you see the Preview Lines update, and then scroll some more.

7. Go into each additional mail account's Inbox, scroll your way down, letting the messages come in.

8. Go to the combined Inbox if you use that, make sure all the messages are in.

9. The WiFi activity spinner may remain spinning even after Mail says it is done Checking Mail. This is because other parts of mail accounts are being synced for the first time. Let the iPhone sit in Mail combined inbox until the spinner stops. Quit Mail, go back in, and watch the spinner after it's done Checking Mail. If the spinner doesn't stop after < 5 seconds or so, let Mail sit again. Once it's caught up, going into mail will Check Mail, and the spinner will stop a few seconds after as it should.

10. You're done.

Hopefully your phone stays cool and your battery life reflects the boost from the 20% larger battery. If not, the next step to try is Reset Network Settings, and finally try a factory reset and installing everything fresh instead of doing a restore. Hopefully you won't need to do that. I didn't.

To follow up on my experience, I had took my new phone (#2) back to the store, where the tech performed a "DFU" reset, which is supposed to be more complete than even an iTunes new phone setup. I set up my email and nothing else (MobileMe first, exchange next) an hung around the store, in 15 minutes the battery went form 100% to 90%.

I showed it to the tech who immediately replaced the phone with a new one (#3). I setup just the mail again and hung out for another half hour. by that time the new phone had dropped from a a 72% charge to 49%.

I then received iPhone #4, set up email and waited. after an hour, the battery charge hadn't changed. Took it home, charged to 100% over night, with limited use (20 mins. of calls and normal email push) , the phone lasted through 2 days, and now over a week later, still holds the charge for 1-2 days with normal use...and it did it while roaming outside the US.

Wow that's bad my mum had same sort of problem with Sony erricsson k800i got it replaced yet the battery still could hold a change yet mine from 2008 I could leave on for 5-6 days till needed changing

So weird I hope you get this problem fixed I would suggest disable Push for mail

and remove all email accounts to make sure it's a hardware problem since software can kill battery quickly

Best of luck fixing this problem

In my case I am sure the problem was down to my works email account (microsoft exhange server). I disabled that and the iphone4 runs at normal temperature again.

Today I re-enabled it and so far its still ok (I didnt delete the mail account as described). My conclusion is the only piece of microsoft technology in my office that I reluctantly use, in this case (microsoft exchange server) is causing grief.

Why on earth was I supprised at that!

I just ran into the same issue with my phone suddenly running hot and eating up battery life. It had been fine all the way up until yesterday. Suddenly I found my phone super hot and battery down to 10% at 5PM - never has happened before (and with normal use all day)! So I deleted all my email accounts (including my work Exchange email) and reinstalled them all and so far so good... BTW I have a Verizon iPhone 4 running 4.2.8. (latest update for my phone, at least that's what iTunes says)

After removing all the email accounts and reinstalling them, I've not had any further issues.

Another possible suggestion:

I also talked to my brother who had similar issues and went to the Genius bar, and the Genius said to try shutting down all multi-tasked apps. Steps: double click home button to bring up multitask bar. Touch any icon and hold down for 2 seconds (like for regular home screen if you want to delete an app). Little ➖ signs will come up on the apps, click them all and they will shut down any multitask running apps.

HTH.

1. Problem started as soon as we all upgraded to 4.3.3 ATT

2. Genius Bar - noobs, knowing nothing about their products except simple things, or to do list like reboot your device, reset network settings or upgrade, reset via iTunes.

3. I got new iPhone 4 2 weeks ago and no problems with 4.3.3. Suddenly we all had problem with ATT in Miami Area on July 28 Tuesday. I had no service for the whole day. I tought its my phone so i upgraded again with iTunes. And now i have the same issue - battery drained to 0 in 10 hours, usuly it holds for 3-4 days, and 2 days in full usage. I tried everything - Network reset, after upgrade i created new profile and added my contacts, notes, mail manually. No photos, few applications again downloaded manualy from my iphone. Apps on the background not taking much of your phones resurces and still they all off. Ill Reapeat myself - 10 hours battery is 0. None of what you typed none of what i tried from other websites works. Its a major bug with 4.3.3 still looking for a solution.

P.S. BTW my phone released in march 2011, with new modem #. Antena still doesnt work - i have 1 or 2 reception bars if im using without bumper or case, my clients and friends complain that they can barely hear me. Apple didnt solved that problem.

The best fix for all iPhone problems. Get a different brand of phone. I've had no problem with my blackberry for years. My current phone is almost two years and battery still lasts a week. And emails never fail to come through.

I've had more trouble with my iPhones than the features are worth!

I have found that the battery life becomes worse over time. if you leave your phone switched on constantly.

A quick fix is to turn your phone off then charge it up and then turn your phone back on and the draining is reduced considerable. The longer you leave it on the faster it tends to drain (after a few charges).

I have also found that you need to leave it off for a couple of hours before switching back on.

This worked for me as the battery was draining on just plain telehone (no mail, no apps, fresh OS install etc) in less than 12 hours. I have continuously run the phone for a couple of weeks. Tried switch off and now I get in excess of 72 hours on the battery (inlcuding a couple of calls).

I have to re-itterate on my previous post. Low and behold it started to get hot once again. I origially purchased two iPhone4 at the same time (my girl friend has the other one). Her phone never even gets warm.

Finally I contacted Apple and withing 2 days they replaced it on my door step. The new one is absolutley perfect.

I think the issue is hardware, I spent hours and tried just about everything that forums and google suggested. It started to behave at one point and then reverted back to running hot again. At the end of the day they should not run hot.
