It isnt an issue to me. I hear the bumpers/ cases fix it. I just hold it a little higher on the device and it works fine.

I have tested this "issue" with both hands in multiple positions on the phone and in different physical locations moving and static position and have not been able to reproduce.

Maybe apple needs to add a tutorial on how to hold the phone. I had about five dropped calls yesterday within a five minute period. If I was aware of the 'special needs' of the phone I might have kept my retro iPhone. When I'm on the phone I'm usually doing about a hundred other things and the last thing on my mind is how to hold my phone. I pre-ordered a black bumper that was shipped on the 24 from...China!! It will not be delivered until June 30. If the bumper is necessary for the phone to function properly then the bumpers should have been included with the phone. Then if people want different colors/cases they could then purchase them. I have supported Apple since the first iPod came out and I would appreciate if Apple could provide it's customers with the same respect. If there is a problem please keep us informed and up to date. And Steve, you are a brilliant man, but please don't tell me I am hold the phone wrong.

People who say they can't reproduce the issue ... you are still losing reception, just not enough to lower your bars. People in already poor reception areas get their bars lowered.

The Bumper seems to cancel out the problem for me.

With the bumper off and the lower left covered, I definitely got a drop in signal though, so the problem is there.

Hopefully they fix it in an update.

The bumper can't "cancel" out the problem, just slightly alleviate it.

I honestly have not had a dropped call with it and I usually only use my left hand when I call. The signal diminishes but, never below one bar. I heard through the grape vine there is an iOS update set for as early as monday the is supoused to fix the problem.

I have an iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and the iPhone 4. All with iOS4. My iPhone 4 experiences the signal loss (actually signal bar loss) but only when it's connected to 3G. I actually haven't experienced any dropped calls even when there are no bars.

I just got home from a visit to the Apple Store (Simi Valley, CA) to see if any one of their demo units would experience the same issue. None of the store phones would exhibit a loss in reception. They were all connected to the EDGE band though. I was talking to an Apple Store employee about how my iPhone 4 was showing a loss in bars so he asked me to show him. Well.... I had full service/bars and we talked a bit about it and he told me that Apple thought iOS4 was switching to 3G bands in a different way in comparison to older OS releases.

He was confident that Apple was going to release an update sometime next week to address the handling of changing bands and frequencies and that it's most likely a software issue.

I do have a funny feeling that they are right about it being a software bug. I have a hard time believing the pessimistic and skeptics that Apple let a hardware problem slip past R&D and their engineers.

AMEN Roscoe. My experience exactly. It mitigates the issue to an extent. It is not a fix.

ALL people have different methods of holding a phone. That should not matter when you're selling A PHONE. Especially the most hyped phone on the planet.

I've been an Apple devotee since the '80s. I'm sure they will make good... but this is a MAJOR ISSUE.

Honestly what can they do if it is a hardware issue. They aren't going to just go and re design it and I don't want a cover for my phone either I want it to to be like it comes in its beauty.

Jenningsallday. You've hit the nail on the head. Why is there so much drama? Because a lot of people have phones that don't work correctly when picked up.

Everyone holds phones differently, so that's an unrealistic solution. (C'mon Steve)

But Apple will fix it. It just may require exchanges for a HECK OF A LOT of phones. Thousands or HUNDREDS of thousands. No one knows yet. Consider yourself lucky if yours does not exhibit the bad behavior. But I agree with you... I like the beauty of the phone.. I don't want to wrap it in cheap plastic. 🙂

This IS an issue, it is not my imagination. I hope they fix this soon or I will be returning mine

Laura, hang in there. We're in the same boat. I have NO DOUBT Apple will fix this.

But it is a MAJOR ISSUE and will not be forgotten by media as so many stories are. I mean, an iPhone that can't be picked up? REALLY?
