iPhone 4/iOS 4 bluetooth muffled on other end

I don't know if it's the phone or the OS, but my headset worked fine with my iPhone 2g. On my new iPhone 4, every bluetooth headset I use connects fine and I can hear the caller perfect. Except, they say it sounds like there's a pillow over my mouth when I talk. To the point of not even recognizing what I say. I tried calling the house, and I can barely hear myself, and it will cut in and out. Anyone else getting this issue?

This is NUTS!

The Moto T505 is one I've been using as well. Seems to be fine sometimes, other times not. I'm trying to nail down the exact steps that cause the garbled audio every time. You might also mix in some background audio apps in your testing as they sometimes seem to add to the BT confusion on speaker and mic priority.

The garble audio issue has to do with mic priority, something that would seem straight forward but seems to have been screwed up in iOS4 perhaps by the addition of the noise canceling mic on the IP4.

FWIW, my sense is that their regression testing on this was limited to simple test cases such as answering an incoming call with the BT headset controls and verifying at the system level that the BT audio connections were established, not necessarily the quality of same nor the various edge cases.

Update: This is my 4th day with the Blueant Q2 it is working perfect and I mean perfect no muffled sound and connects every time this will hold me over until Apple decides to do an update to fix the Bluetooth issue. I also tried my Jawbone Icon , Motorola h17 Motorola h9 and again they are still muffled which means there must be some type of firmware in this Blueant Q2 that is comparable with the OS4 since this headset was first released only a week ago.

I have an iPhone 3G and was successfuly using for several month my Plantronics Voyager Pro. Then I upgraded to iOS 4 (now I have 4.0.1) when it was released and I've still been using my Voyager Pro successfully.

Tonight, I've paired the same Voyager Pro with the 3GS (running 4.0.1) from my wife and it works perfectly.

Therefore, although it is not impossible to have a S/W issue, I'm convinced that the main issue is between the iPhone 4 + iOS 4 and the headset. I'm not convinced that we have a problem with the iOS 4 only and this headset.

If I sit at my desk with my iPhone 4 in a dock right next to me, my Plantronics Voyager Pro works "perfectly" as long as I am using it when the call is initiated. If I switch to it after a call has begun, or if I go more than a few feet away from the phone, it fails. I can't even put the phone in my pocket and maintain a good connection.

I have been an early adopter of many Apple products. iPhone 4 has been the most disappointing experience to date.

I'm sorry this is Not the answer we are looking for, but I'm on day two and over 75 phone calls (both incoming and outgoing) with the BLUEANT Q2. It is working perfect in all areas! The sound quality is as good or better than my Plantronics V. Pro, and the things it can do are great! I again tried my Voyager Pro and it was muffled to incoming caller. I think it's safe to say that if you are forced into needing a working bluetooth then this is it. It really is the best I've used yet and I'm in very noisy areas all the time. It was $140.00 total at ATT store...... I know..
this is bull, but I know no other way....Thanks for Nothing Apple!

Like I posted earlier if you really need Bluetooth and can't wait until Apple fixes the problem that they refuse to admit several of us on this thread had purchased the new Blueant Q2 it works perfect you can buy it at At&T and return it within 30 days for a full refund. It will buy you time if you must have Bluetooth. I am liking the features so much I'll probably keep it and use the Jawbone Icon as a backup. This headset learns all your contacts in 30 seconds when you get an incoming call from a contact it says the name not the number like the older ones but the name, you don't even have to use the button to answer if you want you just say answer or refuse. I'm just happy I can use Bluetooth again with this terrible iPhone4.

I'm not generally an apologist and I am frustrated too. However, to be fair, they have both acknowledged it (thru the dev site) and are working on it.

I'll make sure the engineers know about the Q2 seeming to work fine so they can search there for clues as well.

Software is hard folks, especially when having to support a spec like BT that vendors implement with their own special tweaks despite being encouraged not to.

I have a Blueant Q2 and my iPhone does have the muffled problem. The Q2 doesn't fix it at all for me. I also have the problem with my Jawbone Prime. If I have the Q2 on before I make or receive a call it's fine though. It's only when I turn on the Q2 or Jawbone after a call is established that it has the muffled problem. This is not intermittent for me, it happens every time.

I also had the muffled problem yesterday when I switched between iPhone and Speaker. There was no bluetooth involved at all so it seems to have something to do with switching audio sources. I'm running 4.0.1.

Obviously many problems with the iP4 bluetooth. Here's mine and a quick fix (which has probably been addressed here before).

I have the PlantronicsPRO bluetooth headset. (By far the best I've ever used, by the way). I have the same problems as others here. But if I go to the iP4 bluetooth settings and forget the device, then re-pair the headset, the muffled voice problem goes away. Eventually it comes back, but at least this gets me by.

Hope this helps.

P.S. As a long time Apple product consumer, I am VERY disappointed in the iP4. The problems I have with the bluetooth and the proximity sensor are inexcusable and pretty much make this "phone" unusable as such. If it weren't for this fix, that probably won't work for everyone, I would have returned this "phone." I really hope you guys fix this problem and the others that plague the iP4.

I am on my 3rd iPhone 4, 1st new, 2nd refurb, third who knows....., theoretically it was new from Apple. I won't go into the litany of problems I have had, suffice it to say extreme and numerous. But in all three phones, I have had the bluetooth drop out, garbled, muffled and incomprehensible audio. Probably 90% of the bad audio is on my callers end, not what I hear. I am experiencing the very same things mentioned by everyone in the forum. I have tried numerous hi-end $$ bluetooth headsets (Jawbone, Plantronics, SoundID) and they all have the same problem. With my old original iPhone, I could walk in other rooms with out the phone and only experience scratchy audio and not lose connection unless I went beyond 35 or 40 feet. Now, I can have the phone in my shirt or pants pocket and it will lose connection. I am praying Apple with be able to figure this one out and fix in a software update. I am totally dependent on bluetooth headset use. I refuse to plant any phone on my head. I have heard good results now with the new Blueant Q2, and may pony up just to see if it helps. I am getting tired of recalling, and making excuses on the majority of my calls. Come on Apple, this is no small problem. Acknowledge, analyze and fix the problem. No free case is going to fix this problem.
