    Hi-

    Welcome to Discussions!

Had you paired the iPad with a bluetooth keyboard?
    If so, turn off Bluetooth.

Yes. It's a mild irritant that the iPad doesn't seem to auto-detect whether the paired keyboard is actually there. Once you've paired it, iPad won't give you the on-screen keyboard unless you switch of Bluetooth.

Yep, I also kind of expected the process would be a bit more automatic.
Other than that, though, it is a nice feature.

My keyboard has disappeared too.  I've checked the advice of the other respondents and my wireless keyboard is switched off.  Does anyone have any ideas what the issue could be or how to fix it please?

    Try a System Reset:

Hold down the on/off switch and the Home  button simultaneously  until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if  it appears.

A System Reset does not remove any apps, music, movies, etc. nor does it cause any settings to revert back to default.

Also,   you might wish to download the iPad-2 User Guide.  Pay special   attention to page 162.  Note that this Guide also applies to the iPad-1   with IOS 4.3 except for those functions that are not supported by the   hardware.

Finally,  the  User Guide can be downloaded at no charge via iBooks and a less   comprehensive version of the Guide is included as a Safari bookmark.
